[The Group as Care: Group Dynamics and Functions in Adventure Therapy for Young Adults with Psychosis].

Ojectives The repercussions of a first episode psychosis (FEP) can be very trying for people suffering from it and those around them. The recovery process remains laborious and some people have difficulty engaging in it. Understanding better the effects of group intervention on people suffering from so-called negative symptoms or on those more resistant to usual treatments appears necessary. Adventure therapy stands out among group interventions for its outdoor activities, in a natural setting, aimed at behavioral changes. This study aims to better understand emerging group phenomena, as well

Adapting Cognitive Remediation Group Therapy Online: Focus Groups with People Aging with HIV.

Cognitive health is a significant concern for people aging with HIV/AIDS. Psychosocial group therapies may help people aging with HIV who experience cognitive challenges cope with their symptoms. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed in-person group therapies need adaptation for technology-mediated delivery. Peer-led focus groups discussed adapting cognitive remediation group therapy (CRGT) as an online intervention. CRGT combines mindfulness-based stress reduction and brain training activities. Purposive sampling recruited people aging with HIV (40+) who self-identified cognitive concerns and reside

Navigating Social Enactments in Psychoanalytic Group Therapy.

Addressing social enactments in group therapy requires integrating developmental theory with cultural identity dynamics. As social power dynamics emerge, the effectiveness of psychoanalytic group psychotherapy can be enhanced by modifying perspectives on transference, resistance, and the emotional transparency of the leader. This paper proposes theoretical and technical modifications to respond to repetitions of social inequities in the group process, including revised thinking about resistance analysis, the group agreement and the contact function. These changes aim to equip leaders to engage

Resilience as a predictor of quality of life in participants with borderline personality disorder before and after treatment.

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested that psychotherapy improves the Quality of Life (QoL) of participants with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). However, there are no studies on the differential efficacy of treatments on the QoL of participants with BPD. Moreover, the relationship between QoL and resilience has rarely been studied in participants with BPD. OBJECTIVES: a) to examine whether people with BPD have worse QoL than the non-clinical population; b) to examine whether there are statistically significant differences between Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Systems Training for

Expressive psychotherapy with gender dysphoric patients.

The dictum that transsexualism is resistant to psychotherapy has led many investigators to view sex reassignment surgery (SRS) as the treatment of choice and dismiss psychotherapy as unfeasible. The Gender Identity Clinic at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, was organized to treat transsexuals with individual and group psychotherapy and SRS. Of 50 gender dysphoric (GD) patients, 70% have adjusted to nonsurgical solutions, 20% are receiving treatment, and 10% have received SRS and psychotherapy. The crux of psychotherapy is establishing a therapeutic alliance; this is aided by the con

The efficacy of various modalities of psychotherapy for personality disorders: a systematic review of the evidence and clinical recommendations.

The aim of this paper is to review the level of empirical evidence for four different formats and settings that are available for psychotherapy delivery, i.e., group psychotherapy, out-patient individual psychotherapy, day hospital psychotherapy, and in-patient psychotherapy. The focus is on studies which include a wide range of DSM-IV-TR Axis II personality disorders. The results show that various psychotherapeutic treatments have proven to be efficacious with respect to reducing symptomatology and personality pathology, and improving social functioning in patients with Cluster A, B, C, or no

Psychological interventions for co-occurring depression and substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid depression and substance use disorders are common and have poorer outcomes than either disorder alone. While effective psychological treatments for depression or substance use disorders are available, relatively few randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have examined the efficacy of these treatments in people with these comorbid disorders. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of psychological interventions delivered alone or in combination with pharmacotherapy for people diagnosed with comorbid depression and substance use disorders. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the following

Hyperalimentation in treatment of anorexia nervosa.

Ten patients with anorexia nervosa were treated with intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH) and/or psychotherapy. The five patients were treated with both IVH and psychotherapy. The five patients were treated with both IVH and psychotherapy. Their body weight rose from 66 +/- 3% (mean +/- SE) to 78 +/- 6% of their ideal weight during hospitalization, and then to 91 +/- 5% during ambulatory observation for a period of 6 to 36 months. Another group of 5 patients were treated only with psychotherapy. Their body weight increased 69 +/- 3% to 73 +/- 1% of their ideal weight during hospitalization, and

WISE-Therapy (What's Important: Schedule and Engage) and bouldering psychotherapy for depression: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Group therapies address the growing treatment demand-supply gap for depression. This study evaluated whether the novel WISE-Therapy (WISE-T; What's Important: Schedule and Engage) and Bouldering Psychotherapy (BPT) are more effective in reducing depressive symptoms in an outpatient group therapy setting than treatment as usual (TAU). METHODS: This randomized, controlled, assessor-blinded, longitudinal, clinical trial was conducted in a naturalistic monocentric setting in Erlangen (Germany) between April 2022 and March 2023, with follow-up until July 2024. 128 adults were randomly

Group therapy in primary care settings for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder: A systematic literature review.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to summarize existing literature on group therapy for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in primary care. METHOD: A PRISMA systematic literature review was performed through February 26, 2022 identifying existing studies of group trauma therapy in primary care. Articles were included if they discussed group trauma therapy for primary care patients. Bias was assessed based on sample sizes and presence of control groups. Results are presented as a weighted average of the engagement rate and a qualitative description of overlapping study

Effectiveness of brief group transdiagnostic therapy for emotional disorders in primary care: A randomized controlled trial identifying predictors of outcome.

AbstractBrief transdiagnostic psychotherapy is a possible approach for emotional disorders in primary care. The objective of the present randomized controlled trial was to determine its effectiveness compared with the treatment as usual based on pharmacological interventions in patients with mild/moderate symptoms. In addition, emotional regulation strategies and cognitive factors were studied as potential predictors. Participants (N = 105) were assigned to brief group therapy based on the Unified Protocol (n = 53) or treatment as usual (n = 52). They were assessed before and after the interve

Functional outcomes from psychotherapy for people with posttraumatic stress disorder: A meta-analysis.

People with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experience a wide array of symptoms, often accompanied by significant functional and quality of life impairments. Evidence-based psychotherapies are effective for alleviating symptoms in this group, but functional outcomes following psychotherapy are understudied. This study aimed to synthesize existing work on functional outcomes of psychotherapy to conduct a meta-analytic investigation examining whether people with PTSD experience significant improvements in functioning and quality of life following a course of psychotherapy. A literature sear

Assessing the efficacy of imagery-enhanced cognitive behavioral group therapy for social anxiety disorder: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

Cognitive behavior group therapy (CBGT) is effective for social anxiety disorder (SAD), but a substantial proportion of patients do not typically achieve normative functioning. Cognitive behavioral models of SAD emphasize negative self-imagery as an important maintaining factor, and evidence suggests that imagery is a powerful cognitive mode for facilitating affective change. This study will compare two group CBGT interventions, one that predominantly uses verbally-based strategies (VB-CBGT) and another that predominantly uses imagery-enhanced strategies (IE-CBGT), in terms of (a) efficacy, (b
