Secondary flow velocity patterns in a pulmonary artery model with varying degrees of valvular pulmonic stenosis: pulsatile in vitro studies.

The objective of this study was to characterize in detail the secondary flow velocity patterns in an in vitro model of a human (adult) pulmonary artery with varying degrees of valvular pulmonic stenosis. A two-dimensional laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) system was used to map the flow fields in the main (MPA), left (LPA), and right (RPA) branches of the pulmonary artery model. The study was conducted in the Georgia Tech right heart pulse duplicator system. A pair of counter-rotating secondary flows were observed in each daughter branch in which the fluid moved outwardly along the side walls and

Flow assessment as a function of pump timing of tubular pulsatile pump for use as a ventricular assist device in a left heart simulator.

INTRODUCTION: Although mechanical circulatory support saved many lives during the last decade, clinical observations have shown that the continuous flow pumps are associated with a much higher incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding and kidney problems, among others, compared with the earlier generation pulsatile pumps. However, the presence of several moving mechanical components made pulsatile pumps less durable, bulky, and prone to malfunction, ultimately leading to bias in favor of continuous flow designs. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current work is to create a prototype tubular pulsatile pu

Investigation of the plaque morphology effect on changes of pulsatile blood flow in a stenosed curved artery induced by an external magnetic field.

In a new therapeutic technique, called magnetic drug targeting (MDT), magnetic particles carrying therapeutic agents are directed to the target tissue by applying an external magnetic field. Meanwhile, this magnetic field also affects the blood as a biomagnetic fluid. Therefore, it is necessary to select a magnetic field with an acceptable range of influence on the blood flow. This study investigates the effect of an external magnetic field on the pulsatile blood flow in a stenosed curved artery to identify a safe magnetic field. The effects of a number of parameters, including the magnetic su

Most Small Cerebral Cortical Veins Demonstrate Significant Flow Pulsatility: A Human Phase Contrast MRI Study at 7T.

Phase contrast MRI (pcMRI) has been used to investigate flow pulsatility in cerebral arteries, larger cerebral veins, and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Such measurements of intracranial pulsatility and compliance are beginning to inform understanding of the pathophysiology of conditions including normal pressure hydrocephalus, multiple sclerosis, and dementias. We demonstrate the presence of flow pulsatility in small cerebral cortical veins, for the first time using pcMRI at 7 T, with the aim of improving our understanding of the hemodynamics of this little-studied vascular compartment. Does Maintenance of Pulmonary Blood Flow Pulsatility at the Time of the Fontan Operation Improve Hemodynamic Outcome in Functionally Univentricular Hearts?

It is unclear whether residual anterograde pulmonary blood flow (APBF) at the time of Fontan is beneficial. Pulsatile pulmonary flow may be important in maintaining a compliant and healthy vascular circuit. We, therefore, wished to ascertain whether there was hemodynamic evidence that residual pulsatile flow at time of Fontan promotes clinical benefit. 106 consecutive children with Fontan completion (1999-2018) were included. Pulmonary artery pulsatility index (PI, (systolic pressure-diastolic pressure)/mean pressure)) was calculated from preoperative cardiac catheterization. Spectral analysis

Shape-appearance constrained segmentation and separation of vein and artery in pulsatile tinnitus patients based on MR angiography and flow MRI.

This study reports on the development and evaluation of a novel segmentation method for extracting the internal jugular vein and the adjacent carotid artery from magnetic resonance (MR) images of patients with pulsatile tinnitus. A narrow band level set method with combined shape and appearance constraints was developed and applied to high-resolution MR images from 17 pulsatile tinnitus patients (age 52 ± 23 years, 10 females). The proposed method was validated by comparing with the manual segmentation as well as by identifying the jugular vein and carotid artery based on 4D flow MRI in which

[Reference values for the pulsatility index and the resistance index of blood flow curves of the umbilical artery and fetal aorta in the 3d trimester].

In 209 pregnancies without complications we recorded blood velocity waveforms of the umbilical artery and the foetal aorta between 29 and 42 weeks of gestation by means of a Duplex-pulsed Doppler system (umbilical artery: n = 276; foetal aorta: n = 244). We calculated the pulsatility index (PI) and the resistance index (RI). Both indices were normally distributed. The regression lines and reference ranges for the 95% confidence intervals are shown. The PI as well as the RI of waveforms of the umbilical artery demonstrated a significant fall with increasing gestation. The PI of the foetal aorta

Influence of PEG Molecular Weight on Washout Resistance and Deposition Efficiency of Magnetoresponsive Nanoclusters Under Pulsatile Flow for Magnetic Drug Targeting.

Background/Objectives: Magnetic drug targeting (MDT) using polyethene glycol (PEG)-coated magnetoresponsive nanoclusters (MNCs) can localize therapeutics, but washout from high-shear arterial flow limits efficacy. This study assesses how PEG molecular weight influences MNC deposition and washout resistance under a pulsatile flow. Methods: Magnetite MNCs were synthesized via solvothermal polyol reactions and PEGylated with PEG-2000, PEG-6000, or PEG-10,000. Characterization included TEM, DLS, zeta potential, FTIR, TGA, XPS, magnetic analysis, and rheology. In vitro assays used a 3 mm diameter g

Effects of different morphologic abnormalities on hemodynamics in patients with venous pulsatile tinnitus: A four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging study.

The effects of morphologic abnormalities, including sigmoid sinus wall dehiscence (SSWD), transverse sinus stenosis (TSS), and sigmoid sinus diverticulum (SSD), on hemodynamics in venous pulsatile tinnitus (PT) patients have not been established. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of SSWD, TSS, and SSD on the hemodynamics of transverse-sigmoid sinus in venous PT patients. This was a prospective study with 44 venous PT patients and 12 healthy controls. A 3 T/four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging with fast field echo was used. Flow-based simulation in transverse sinus stenosis pre- and post-stenting: pressure prediction accuracy, hemodynamic complexity, and relationship to pulsatile tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: The proximity of transverse sinus stenosis (TSS) to inner ear structures and the temporal bone makes it a substantial cause of pulsatile tinnitus (PT). Treatment typically involves venous sinus stenting. This study investigates the hemodynamic stressors in TSS patients with PT along the pulse-transmitting temporal bone area and evaluates its treatment effects. METHODS: Four patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension, PT, and TSS, and four control patients were imaged using MR venography (MRV) and flat panel CT (FP-CT). Patient-specific blood flow simulations were conducted

Comparison of hemodynamics and root configurations between remodeling and reimplantation methods for valve-sparing aortic root replacement: a pulsatile flow study.

PURPOSE: To compare the characteristics of reimplantation (RI) using grafts with sinuses and remodeling (RM) with/without external suture annuloplasty using a pulsatile flow simulator. METHODS: Porcine aortic roots were obtained from an abattoir, and six models of RM and RI with sinuses were prepared. External suture annuloplasty (ESA) was performed in the RM models to decrease the root diameter to 22 mm (RM-AP22) and 18 mm (RM-AP18). Valve models were tested at mean pulsatile flow and aortic pressure of 5.0 L/min and 120/80 (100) mmHg, respectively, at 70 beats/min. The forward flow, regurgi

Blood flow changes in the transverse-sigmoid sinus junction following effective surgical reconstruction for unilateral pulsatile tinnitus with sigmoid sinus wall anomalies: a four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pulsatile tinnitus (PT) with sigmoid sinus wall anomalies (SSWAs) is often treated by surgical reconstruction. However, the effect of this surgical procedure on the PT-related blood flow is unclear. This study compared changes in the PT-related blood flow velocity and patterns in the transverse-sigmoid sinus junction (TSSJ) before and after surgical reconstruction using four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: A retrospective study analyzed patients with unilateral pulse-synchronous PT confirmed to have ipsilateral SSWAs on preoperative CT, who underwe

Pulsatile flow of non-Newtonian blood fluid inside stenosed arteries: Investigating the effects of viscoelastic and elastic walls, arteriosclerosis, and polycythemia diseases.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In this study, the interaction of pulsatile blood flow with the viscoelastic walls of the axisymmetric artery is numerically investigated for different severities of stenosis. The geometry of artery is modeled by an axisymmetric cylindrical tube with a symmetric stenosis in a two-dimensional case. The effects of stenosis severity on the axial velocity profile, pressure distribution, streamlines, wall shear stress, and wall radial displacement for the viscoelastic artery are also compared to the elastics artery. Furthermore, the effects of atherosclerosis and polycythe

Viscosity-adjusted estimation of pressure head and pump flow with quasi-pulsatile modulation of rotary blood pump for a total artificial heart.

Estimation of pressure and flow has been an important subject for developing implantable artificial hearts. To realize real-time viscosity-adjusted estimation of pressure head and pump flow for a total artificial heart, we propose the table estimation method with quasi-pulsatile modulation of rotary blood pump in which systolic high flow and diastolic low flow phased are generated. The table estimation method utilizes three kinds of tables: viscosity, pressure and flow tables. Viscosity is estimated from the characteristic that differential value in motor speed between systolic and diastolic p

Non-Newtonian pulsatile blood flow through the stenosed arteries: comparison between the viscoelastic and elastic arterial wall in response to the alterations.

In this study, we investigate the impact of aortic stenosis on the hemodynamics of pulsatile blood flow within a 3D aortic model. Employing a non-Newtonian Casson model with a hematocrit of 45%, our study introduces a preliminary hypothesis to simulate blood flow dynamics, incorporating both linear elastic and viscoelastic models to define the mechanical characteristics of the artery. Through simulations conducted with Ansys-Cfx (version 15), we utilize a 2-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) approach, employing a Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation with second-order accuracy. We explore the inf
