Arterial stiffness is a major condition related to many cardiovascular diseases. Traditional approaches in the assessment of arterial stiffness supported by machine learning techniques are limited to the pulse wave velocity (PWV) estimation based on pressure signals from the peripheral arteries. Nevertheless, arterial stiffness can be assessed based on the pressure-strain relationship by analyzing its hysteresis loop. In this work, the capacity of deep learning models based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) to transfer pressure signals from the peripheral arterial region to pressure an

PURPOSE: Sedentary behavior may contribute to increased central wave reflection due to associated peripheral vasoconstriction, yet its impact on central hemodynamics and the mitigating effects of interventional strategies have not been thoroughly investigated. We tested whether standing or seated elliptical breaks alleviate the deleterious effects of prolonged sitting on central wave reflections.
METHODS: Eighteen healthy adults (9 9 females, 25 ± 3 yr) completed three 3-h protocols on separate days: uninterrupted sitting, sitting with periodic standing, and sitting with periodic seated ellip

Cuffless blood pressure (BP) measurement could improve hypertension awareness and control and is being widely pursued. Some have proposed to estimate BP from the electrocardiogram (ECG) alone despite little physiological basis. In this minireview, we extracted the most relevant articles related to ECG-based BP estimation. Our findings suggest that, as expected, estimating BP from ECG does not appear to be viable. Most notably, we have not found any evidence that ECG features can track BP changes. At best, certain ECG features may indicate heart disease and thus correlate with high BP, but this

This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of autoregulated and non-autoregulated applied pressures during blood flow restriction resistance exercise to volitional fatigue on indices of arterial stiffness using the Delfi Personalized Tourniquet System. Following a randomized autoregulated or non-autoregulated blood flow restriction familiarization session, 20 physically active adults (23±5 years; 7 females) participated in three randomized treatment-order sessions with autoregulated and non-autoregulated and no blood flow restriction training. Participants performed four sets of dumbbel

Managing patient 'dry weight' according to clinical standards has deficiencies. Research has focused on the effectiveness of using bioelectrical impedance technology for fluid management in dialysis patients. Whether bioelectrical impedance monitoring can improve dialysis patients prognoses remain controversial. We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to determine whether bioelectrical impedance was effective in improving dialysis patients prognoses. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality (13.6 ± 9.1 months). Secondary outcomes were left ventricular mass index (LVMI),

Carotid artery longitudinal wall motion (CALM) is a novel preclinical marker for atherosclerosis that describes the axial anterograde and retrograde motion of the intima-media complex. While regular physical activity and sex are known to independently influence arterial stiffness, their roles on axial arterial wall behaviour are unknown. The purpose of this study is to examine whether physical activity and sex impact CALM. We hypothesized that CALM retrograde displacement and total amplitude would be greater in females and active individuals, as a function of arterial stiffness. Fifty-seven yo

OBJECTIVE: Plaque characterization is essential for stroke prevention. In the study reported herein, we describe a heterogeneous phantom manufacturing technique with varying plaque compositions of different stiffness using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to emulate stenotic arteries and evaluated the use of pulse wave imaging (PWI) to assess plaque stiffness by comparing derived pulse wave velocities, with the goal of assessing plaque vulnerability and identifying high-risk patients for stroke.
METHODS: Five stenotic phantoms (50% stenosis) were fabricated by pouring PVA solutions into 3-D-printed mo

Previous studies have found that the non-invasive blood pressure measurement method based on the oscillometric method is inaccurate when an arrhythmia occurs. Therefore, we propose a high-sensitivity pulse sensor that can measure the hemodynamic characteristics of the pulse wave and then estimate the blood pressure. When an arrhythmia occurs, the hemodynamics of the pulse wave are abnormal and change the morphology of the pulse wave. Our proposed sensor can measure the occurrence of ectopic beats from the radial artery, and the detection algorithm can reduce the error of blood pressure estimat

OBJECTIVE: Hypertension is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death. New methods for early detection of hypertension and its consequences can reduce complications arising from uncontrolled hypertension. Pulse-wave velocity (PWV), a measure of arterial stiffness, has been recognized as a valuable tool in assessing risk for cardiovascular complications, although its use in clinical practice is currently limited. Here we examine whether brachial--ankle PWV (baPWV) and femoral--ankle PWV (faPWV) are elevated in nonhypertensive volunteers, with and without a history of famili

As a surrogate measure of blood pressure, pulse transit time (PTT) is commonly used in studies investigating arterial function and respiratory sleep disturbance. A systematic search of the literature was conducted with the aim of reviewing the usefulness of the technique within pediatric sleep studies. All studies that used PTT as a diagnostic tool during sleep in infants, children or adolescents were considered. The search yielded 425 articles, of which 21 full-text articles met inclusion criteria, the majority reporting on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). PTT was used alongside polysomnography

ObjectiveTo investigate the association between the endothelial activation and stress index and cardiovascular disease prevalence among postmenopausal women and to evaluate whether arterial stiffness, assessed by estimated pulse wave velocity, statistically accounts for part of this association.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 9877 postmenopausal women from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2018). Endothelial activation and stress index was log-transformed (LnEASIX), and arterial stiffness was assessed using estimated pulse wave velocity. Logistic regr

CONTEXT: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), characterized by elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) and hypercalcemia, has been implicated in vascular calcification and increased arterial stiffness. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) is the gold-standard marker of large artery stiffness, while the Augmentation Index (AI), pulse pressure (PP), and Renal Resistive Index (RRI) offer insights into wave reflection and microvascular function.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the associations between PTH levels and these vascular parameters before and after parathyroidectomy (PTX).

Acute prolonged sitting increases blood pressure (BP) and arterial stiffness (AS). Both of these may be mitigated via light physical activity (LPA). Whether long COVID (LC), which partly manifests as vascular sequelae, predisposes a heightened sensitivity to sitting or diminished benefits from its interruption is unknown. The aims of this study were to identify whether individuals with LC: (i) exhibit a worse BP/AS response to uninterrupted sitting and (ii) a diminished mitigation of BP/AS response to sitting interrupted with LPA, compared to healthy controls. Thirty participants with LC and 1

We present a hermetically sealed capacitive microelectromechanical system (MEMS) strain sensor designed for arterial pulse waveform extraction using the strain plethysmography (SPG) modality. The MEMS strain sensor features a small form factor of 3.3 mm × 3.3 mm × 1 mm, leverages a nano-gap fabrication process to improve the sensitivity, and uses a differential sensing mechanism to improve the linearity and remove the common mode drift. The MEMS strain sensor is interfaced with an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) to form a compact strain sensing system. This system exhibits a hig

This study presents a database of central blood pressure waveforms according to cardiovascular health conditions, to supplement the lack of clinical data in cardiovascular health research, constructed by a cardiovascular simulator. Blood pressure (BP) is the most frequently measured biomarker, and in addition to systolic and diastolic pressure, its waveform represents the various conditions of cardiovascular health. A BP waveform is formed by overlapping the forward and reflected waves, which are affected by the pulse wave velocity (PWV). The increase in vascular stiffness with aging increases

BACKGROUND: Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a noninvasive measure of arterial stiffness and predictor of cardiovascular disease. However, the association between PWV and vascular calcification across different vascular beds has not been fully investigated. This study aimed to quantify the association between PWV and multiterritory calcification and to explore whether PWV can identify individuals with vascular calcification beyond traditional risk factors.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Among 1351 older adults (mean age, 79.2 years [SD, 4.1]) from the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study, we me
