BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery is a major therapeutic advancement but remains associated with neurological complications, including ischemic stroke and postoperative cognitive decline. Compared with stroke of other etiologies, ischemic brain injury following cardiac surgery may involve distinct vascular territories and functional networks, potentially influencing its characteristic cognitive profile.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review of case reports describing ischemic brain lesions occurring after cardiac surgery in adults with available neuroimaging data. Lesions were manually traced o

Lasting thalamus volume reduction after preterm birth is a prominent finding. However, whether thalamic nuclei volumes are affected differentially by preterm birth and whether nuclei aberrations are relevant for cognitive functioning remains unknown. Using T1-weighted MR-images of 83 adults born very preterm (≤ 32 weeks' gestation; VP) and/or with very low body weight (≤ 1,500 g; VLBW) as well as of 92 full-term born (≥ 37 weeks' gestation) controls, we compared thalamic nuclei volumes of six subregions (anterior, lateral, ventral, intralaminar, medial, and pulvinar) across groups at the age o

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that patients with chronic migraine exhibit abnormalities in structural and functional brain networks. However, the underlying brain mechanisms that govern structural-to-functional connectivity coupling in this population remain unclear.
METHODS: Multimodal functional MRI data were collected from 36 patients with chronic migraine without aura, 94 patients with episodic migraine without aura and 51 healthy controls. Spearman's correlation analysis was used to calculate SC-FC coupling. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare differences in SC-FC coupling betwe

INTRODUCTION: Essential tremor (ET) is a neurological disorder primarily characterized by upper limb action tremor. It is widely recognized that the thalamus is implicated in ET pathophysiology, playing a central role in treatment approaches. This study aimed to explore thalamic morphology, assessing macrostructural changes and intrinsic thalamic networks in ET patients.
METHODS: A total of 109 ET (41 with and 68 without resting tremor) and 81 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled in the study. An automatic probabilistic segmentation of thalamic nuclei was employed on T1-weighted MRI images usi

Congenital sensory deprivation induces significant changes in the structural and functional organisation of the brain. These are well-characterised by cross-modal plasticity, in which deprived cortical areas are recruited to process information from non-affected sensory modalities, as well as by other neuroplastic alterations within regions dedicated to the remaining senses. Here, we analysed visual and auditory networks of congenitally deaf and hearing individuals during different visual tasks to assess changes in network community structure and connectivity patterns due to congenital deafnes

Higher-order thalamic nuclei contribute to sensory processing via projections to primary and higher cerebral cortical areas, but it is unknown which of their cortical and subcortical inputs contribute to their distinct output pathways. We used subpopulation specific viral strategies in mice to anatomically and physiologically dissect pathways of the higher-order thalamic nuclei of the somatosensory and visual systems (the posterior medial nucleus and pulvinar). Employing a complementary optogenetics and electrical stimulation strategy, we show that synapses in cortex from higher-order thalamus

Early effects induced by cysteine were monitored using the model of Mimosa pudica pulvinar cells. Rapid dose-dependent membrane depolarization (within seconds) and modification of proton secretion (within minutes) were triggered at cysteine concentrations higher than 0.1 mM. These effects did not result from a modification of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase activity nor from a protonophore effect as shown by assays on plasma membrane vesicles isolated from pulvinar tissues. In a 0.5-10 mM range, cysteine inhibited the ion-driven turgor-mediated seismonastic reaction of Mimosa pudica primary pulv

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Corticothalamic networks are considered core pathologic substrates for idiopathic generalized epilepsy; however, the predominant epileptogenic epicenters within these networks are still largely unknown. The current study aims to identify these epicenters by resting-state functional connectivity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To identify epicenters within the corticothalamic networks in idiopathic generalized epilepsy, we retrospectively studied a large cohort of patients with this condition (n = 97) along with healthy controls (n = 123) by resting-state functional MR imaging.

Atypical clinical course and low sensitivity of established diagnostic tests are the main diagnostic problems in the MV2 subtype of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD). Clinical symptoms and signs, MRI, EEG and biochemical CSF markers were studied in 26 patients. Histological findings were semiquantitatively evaluated. Compared with typical sCJD, the disease duration was prolonged (median 12 months). Dementia, ataxia and psychiatric symptoms were present in all patients. Extrapyramidal signs were observed in 88%. T2-weighted MRI showed basal ganglia hyperintensities in 90%. Increased tha

The afferent and efferent connections of the prelunate visual association area V4 of macaque monkeys were investigated by means of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method. The specific thalamic afferents from the dorsolateral segment of the medial pulvinar and the lateral segment of the inferior pulvinar were topographically organized. A band of cells was labelled in the intralaminar nuclei (nucl. centr. med. and lat., reaching into LD and the most dorsal part of VL), and a few cells in the interlaminar layers of the lateral geniculate body. Other diencephalic afferents included the claustrum,

As the symptom of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is paroxysmal during sleeping, the disruptions of dynamic functional connectivity (FC) between thalamic subnuclei and the cortex may play a critical role in Parkinson's disease (PD). A total of 35 PD patients with probable RBD (PD-pRBD) and 40 PD patients without probable RBD (PD-npRBD) and 41 healthy controls were enrolled. All participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging scan and clinical assessment. Altered dynamic FC between bilateral 14 thalamic nuclei and cortex was calculated. Although the RBDSQ demonstra

Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) is a rapidly progressive dementia (RPD) that can be difficult to identify antemortem, with definitive diagnosis requiring tissue confirmation. We describe the clinical, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and electroencephalogram (EEG) measures of a small cohort of 30 patients evaluated for RPD. Clinical and diagnostic measures were cross-sectionally obtained from 17 sCJD patients (15 definite, two probable), 13 non-prion rapidly progressive dementia patients (npRPD), and 18 unimpaired controls. In a subset of patients (nine sC

Thalamic projections to the motor cortex have been studied in the cat by injecting small amounts of horseradish peroxidase in different parts of areas 4 and 6. The nuclei which more abundantly project to the motor cortex are the ventral anterior-ventral lateral complex, the ventral medial and the posterior complex. These projections are topographically organized. Other projections arise from the ventral postero-lateral, ventral postero-inferior, central lateral, central medial, medial dorsal, lateral posterior-pulvinar, suprageniculate and centrum medianum-parafascicular nuclei.

A 67 year old woman with a two year history of laryngopharyngeal dystonia, spasmodic dysphonia, and parkinsonism succumbed to Wernicke's encephalopathy and died six months later. Necropsy showed, besides Wernicke's encephalopathy, degenerative changes in selected thalamic nuclei (dorsomedial, pulvinar, and the medial geniculate bodies) and the inferior olives and numerous cerebellar torpedoes. The substantia nigra and basal ganglia were spared. Immunostaining for prion protein was negative. This patient indicated a new type of presentation of so-called pure thalamic degeneration, or more preci

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) is a rare, progressive and invariably fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by specific histopathological features. Of the four subtypes of CJD described, the commonest is sporadic CJD (sCJD). More recently, a new clinically distinct form of the disease affecting younger patients, known as variant CJD (vCJD), has been identified, and this has been causally linked to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent in cattle. Characteristic appearances on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been identified in several forms of CJD; sCJD may be associated

Larger thalamic volume has been found in children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and children with clinical-level symptoms within the general population. Particular thalamic subregions may drive these differences. The ENIGMA-OCD working group conducted mega- and meta-analyses to study thalamic subregional volume in OCD across the lifespan. Structural T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from 2649 OCD patients and 2774 healthy controls across 29 sites (50 datasets) were processed using the FreeSurfer built-in ThalamicNuclei pipeline to extract five thalamic subregi
