Sarcophaga peregrina (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is a forensically important flesh fly with potential value for estimating the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). Here, the developmental patterns of S. peregrina were investigated at 5 constant temperatures (15-35 °C). Morphological changes at different developmental stages of the pupa were observed at 4 constant temperatures (15-30 °C) by removing the puparium and staining the pupa with hematoxylin and eosin. Furthermore, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were analyzed at 25 °C in the intrapuparial period to estima

Methoprene, a juvenile hormone (JH) analog, is widely used for insect control, but its mode of action is not known. To study methoprene action in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, the E93 (ecdysone-induced transcription factor) was knocked out using the CRISPR-Cas9 system. The E93 mutant pupae retained larval tissues similar to methoprene-treated insects. These insects completed pupal ecdysis and died as pupa. In addition, the expression of transcription factors, broad complex and Krüppel homolog 1 (Kr-h1), increased and that of programmed cell death (PCD) and autophagy genes decreased

Nyssomyia umbratilis (Ward & Frahia) is the main vector of Leishmania guyanensis in the Brazilian Amazon region, where it is widely distributed. Studies have hypothesized that this phlebotomine is part of a cryptic species complex, spatially delimited by the Amazonian river systems, and with different transmission potential of L. guyanensis. In the present study, the immature stages of N. umbratilis are described from laboratory-reared specimens originating from the states of Amazonas and Pará, Brazil. Based on scanning electron and optical microscopy examinations, fine morphological structure

BACKGROUND: Actin-related protein 2/3 complex regulates actin polymerization and the formation of branched actin networks. However, the function and evolutionary relationship of this complex subunit 2 (Arpc2) has been poorly understood in insects.
RESULTS: To address these issues, we performed comprehensive analysis of Arpc2 in Tribolium castaneum. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Arpc2 was originated from one ancestral gene in animals but evolved independently between vertebrates and insects after species differentiation. T. castaneum Arpc2 has a 906-bp coding sequence and consists of 4 e

Aedes albopictus, known as the Asian tiger mosquito, is a significant vector for dengue fever, chikungunya, zika virus, yellow fever. Current control methods rely on chemical insecticides, which face challenges such as resistance, environmental harm, and impact on non-target species Eudrilus eugeniae and Artemia salina. This study evaluates the toxic effects of biogenic copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) synthesized using Metarhizium robertsii intracellular extract obtained from our previous research. The CuNPs were tested against A. albopictus and non-target species at 24 and 48 hours post-treatmen

Vector-borne diseases are a major public health problem. Amongst them, dengue, Zika and chikungunya illnesses are increasing their incidence and geographical expansion. Since vector control is the main measure to prevent these diseases, this systematic review aims to determine the effectiveness of environmental interventions for the prevention of the transmission of these three diseases, as well as for the reduction of their burden. Experimental studies of environmental management interventions aimed at vector control were included. The outcome variables of interest were disease burden indicat

Hessian fly resistance has centralized around resistance loci that are biotype specific. We show that field resistance is evident and controlled by a single locus on chromosome 7D. Hessian flies (Mayetiola destructor Say) infest and feed upon wheat (Triticum aestivum L) resulting in significant yield loss. Genetically resistant cultivars are the most effective method of Hessian fly management. Wheat breeders in the southern USA have observed cultivars exhibiting a "field resistance" to Hessian fly that is not detectable by greenhouse assay. The resistant breeding line "LA03136E71" and suscepti

Mosquitoes transmit several pathogens in tropical regions, especially in forest areas. The diseases caused by these pathogens include malaria and several arboviruses such as yellow fever. Brazil has the largest endemic area in the world for yellow fever. Many factors can affect the sylvatic cycle of the disease, shifting it into human-inhabited areas. This study aims to examine the oviposition behavior of mosquito species that are effective or potential vectors of the yellow fever virus and which colonize bamboo traps and ovitraps installed at different heights. The positions of the traps in t

Prenatal methylmercury (MeHg) exposure presents a heightened concern in early human development, as has been exemplified in historic cases of congenital minimata disease (CMD). Children who experience CMD characteristically present with various degrees of cognitive and motor symptoms and signs, much like cerebral palsy. MeHg has thus been characterized as a neurotoxicant, where motor deficits are ascribed to central nervous system targets. Skeletal muscle as a post-synaptic MeHg target and contributor to the etiology of CMD has garnered far less attention. Prior studies using Drosophila to mod

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is the major myiasis-causing fly species in the whole of Eurasia for most important domestic animals. The aim of the present work was to obtain data on the culturable bacteria isolated under aerobic conditions from this fly: bacteria were isolated from all developmental stages (larvae, pupa, and imago) of Wohlfahrtia magnifica, and the third-stage larval organs were also sampled. To determine the possible antagonistic effects between the dominant bacterial groups, an antibiosis assay was carried out. Plating and isolation of bacteria was performed

Pesticide contamination of agroecosystems poses significant risks to non-target arthropods, including natural enemies that provide essential pest regulation services. Assessing the ecotoxicological impact of reduced-risk pesticides on beneficial predators is therefore critical for both environmental safety and sustainable agriculture. This study evaluated the lethal and sublethal ecotoxicological effects of six pesticide formulations-abamectin, deltamethrin, paraffinic oil, potassium soap, and the entomopathogens Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae-on second-instar larvae, third-inst

Kapok is the main host of Glenea cantor (Fabricius), which causes serious damage and is difficult to control. In severe cases, it often causes the kapok trees to die continuously, which seriously affects the results of urban landscaping. To provide reference for the functional research on related genes in G. cantor, we screened the stable expression of candidate reference genes at different developmental stages (i.e., eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults), in various adult tissues (i.e., head, thorax, abdomen, feet, antennae, and wings), and sexes (i.e., male pupae, female pupae, male adults, and f

Sleep is ubiquitous in vertebrates and invertebrates, and its loss is typically associated with reduced performance, health, or survival, for reasons that are yet unclear [1-3]. Nevertheless, some animals can reduce sleep for increasing foraging time [4], under predation risk [5-8], during seasonal migration [9-11], or for having greater mating opportunities [12, 13]. Here, we tested the hypothesis that social bumble bee (Bombus terrestris) workers give up sleep for improving brood care. We combined video recordings, detailed behavioral analyses, sleep-deprivation experiments, and response-thr

To counter the spread of multiple Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) variants harboured in alternative host species and highly neurotoxic variants with new antigenicity, such as genotype V (Muar), methods for developing more effective and low-cost vaccines against a variety of epidemic JEV strains are required. Here, we successfully synthesized large amounts of a Muar virus-like particle (MVLP) vaccine for JEV in silkworm pupae by using a Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus recombinant consisting of JEV codon-optimized envelope (E) DNA. In particular, histopathological examination suggested

Grass carp hemorrhagic disease is a common fish disease and often results in significant economic losses in grass carp aquaculture in China. This study was aimed to develop a novel oral vaccine against grass carp reovirus (GCRV). GCRV vp6 and vp7 genes with β-actin promoter of Megalobrama amblycephala and polyhedrin promoter (Ph10) of baculovirus, respectively, were cloned into plasmid pFast™-Dual to construct a vector pFast-PHVP7-AVP6, which was used to generate a recombinant baculovirus BacFish-vp6/vp7 via Bac-to-Bac system. The VP7 expression was analyzed from freeze-dried powder of the Bac

The efficacy of three reduced-risk insecticides (pyrethrins, insecticidal soap, and narrow-range mineral oil) was determined for nymphs and adults of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), an exotic pest of North American soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. These insecticides also were evaluated for nontarget effects on one of the aphid's key biological control agents, multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), including first and third instars, pupae, and adults. A Potter Spray Tower was used to conduct direct spray laborat

Pseudomonas fluorescens Migula (VCRC B426) produces a secondary metabolite, which was found to be active against pupae of vector mosquitoes namely Culex quinquefasciatus, Anopheles stephensi and Aedes aegypti. The mosquito pupicidal metabolite from P. fluoescens was mass produced and separated by ethyl acetate extraction and purified further by silica gel column chromatography, FPLC, HPLC and TLC. The purified metabolite was characterized by NMR, FT-IR, LC-MS and MALDI-TOF. The FT-IR, (1)H and (13)C NMR results showed that it is a rhamnolipid (di-rhamnolipid). The matrix assisted laser desorpt
