Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in Cystic Endometrial Hyperplasia-Pyometra Complex in the Bitch: A Preliminary Study.

In cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH)-pyometra syndrome, toxic factors and endometrial remodeling culminate in changes characterized by exudative and degenerative inflammatory reaction. Recent studies on hemodynamic found an increased blood flow and lower vascular resistance in uterine arteries, suggesting color Doppler ultrasound as an adjunctive tool for quantitative assessment of endometrial vascularization during pyometra. The aim of this study was to assess, through contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) exam, the vascularization in endometrial microvessels in CEH-pyometra in order to eval

Spontaneous perforation of pyometra presenting as acute abdomen and pneumoperitoneum mimicking those of gastrointestinal origin.

Gastrointestinal (GI) perforation accounts for over 90% of acute abdomen and pneumoperitoneum. The presence of pneumoperitoneum secondary to spontaneously perforated pyometra is an interesting yet confusing finding given the absence of gastrointestinal (GI) perforation, because pyometra is more common in postmenopausal women. We report an instructive case of diffuse peritonitis caused by spontaneous perforation of pyometra. A 70-year-old postmenopausal female was admitted to surgical emergency with signs of diffuse peritonitis. After resuscitation, an emergency laparotomy was performed because

Uterine endometrial polyp with severe hemorrhage and cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra complex in a dog.

The current report describes an unusual presentation of uterine endometrial polyp with severe hemorrhage and cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra complex in a 9.5-year-old female Doberman Pinscher. The dog presented with a 2-day history of bloody discharge from the vulva and an enlarged abdomen. The postmortem examination revealed a markedly distended right uterine horn with a large pedunculated mass (17 cm x 9 cm x 4 cm) and blood. Based on the histological findings, the diagnosis of uterine endometrial polyp was made.

Antibiotic-Free Management of Canine Pyometra With Aglepristone: Endocrine Effects and Post-Treatment Vaginal Hyperplasia.

This study evaluated the clinical efficacy of aglepristone for the management of canine pyometra-either as a sole therapy or in combination with different antibiotic regimens-and investigated the association between aglepristone dosing and the occurrence of vaginal hyperplasia during the subsequent estrous cycle. Eighty-seven intact bitches diagnosed with pyometra were enrolled and divided into two experiments. In Experiment I, 57 bitches were randomly assigned to three treatment groups (n = 19/group): (1) AGL, aglepristone alone; (2) AGL-CEF, aglepristone plus ceftriaxone; and (3) AGL-CEF-MET

Cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra syndrome impairs the preantral follicle reserve in domestic bitches (Canis familiaris).

Cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH)-pyometra syndrome is the most common uterine pathological condition reported in breeding bitches, however, their described effects on fertility are limited to uterine disorders and conception rates. As the preantral follicle population represents the available reserve of gametes recruited during the lifespan, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of CEH-pyometra syndrome on the: (i) preantral follicle morphology, (ii) developing follicle rates, and (iii) preantral follicle and stromal cell densities. Ovarian fragments from bitches subjected to e

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor expression in the canine endometrium with cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra complex.

The most common uterine diseases in bitches occurring during diestrus are cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) and pyometra. These diseases can coexist as CEH-pyometra complex (CEH-P). Their pathogenesis has not been fully explained. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are important factors regulating mammalian reproductive function and inflammatory processes. Although there is a lack of data concerning the expression of PPARs in the canine endometrium during CEH and CEH-P, we hypothesized that they might be involved in the development of pathological disorders of the canine en

Differentiation between pyometra and cystic endometrial hyperplasia/mucometra in bitches by prostaglandin F2alpha metabolite analysis.

Bitches with pyometra are potential emergency cases which may be clinically difficult to differentiate from cases of cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) in combination with mucometra. In the present study plasma prostaglandin F(2alpha), as measured by its main metabolite 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF(2alpha) (PG-metabolite) concentrations, blood biochemical and hematological parameters were measured in 59 bitches with pyometra, 10 bitches with CEH and nine controls to determine if PG-metabolite could differentiate between the three uterine conditions. Bitches with pyometra had significantly highe

Pyometra with Concurrent Endometrial Adenocarcinoma in Laboratory Opossums (Monodelphis domestica): A Case Series of Four Animals.

The use of laboratory opossums (Monodelphis domestica) in biomedical research has increased since the 1980s, when the first colonies were established in the United States, due to their relatively low maintenance requirements and cyclical breeding patterns resulting in reproductive efficiency. Despite their growing use, reproductive disorders in this species remain poorly characterized. A 2.5-year-old female laboratory opossum was euthanized for humane reasons after presenting lethargy, inappetence, and a severely distended abdomen. Gross necropsy revealed marked uterine enlargement. Cytologic

First reported case of Robinsoniella peoriensis pyometra and bloodstream infection: A case report and review of the literature.

We report on a 47-year-old woman with jejunal adenocarcinoma and concurrent endometrial cancer, admitted with sepsis. Uterine fluid and blood cultures were positive for Robinsoniella peoriensis. This is the first case report of Robinsoniella peoriensis in Canada. We encourage clinicians to publish their experience treating gynecologic infections caused by Robinsoniella peoriensis. Failure to recognize this pathogen as causative for pyometra, may result in insufficient antimicrobial treatment, and death.

Meningitis caused by Listeria monocytogenes in a locally advanced cervical cancer patient with pyometra: A case report.

Locally advanced cervical cancer occasionally induces pyometra, but there have been no reports of meningitis where pyometra is the cause of infection. Here, we report a case of Listeria monocytogenes meningitis related to pyometra during concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) in a cervical cancer patient. The patient, a 77-year-old woman, was diagnosed with Stage IIB (FIGO 2018) cervical adenocarcinoma, and CCRT was initiated. Pyometra was exacerbated during CCRT, and after her first brachytherapy, she presented at our hospital with fever and decreased consciousness level. After admission to the

Damage Control Management of Perforating Pyometra Presenting with Septic Shock after the Return of Spontaneous Circulation.

INTRODUCTION: Perforation of pyometra is often severe but rare. We report a case of pyometra detected on second-look surgery in an elderly patient with life-threatening septic shock and cardiopulmonary arrest before hospital arrival. Case Presentation. A 70-year-old woman with cardiopulmonary arrest received adrenaline. Computed tomography revealed ascites, and abdominal paracentesis was performed to identify the cause of cardiopulmonary arrest. The ascitic fluid was purulent, and intraperitoneal infection was identified. Emergency exploratory laparotomy revealed pyometra. CONCLUSION: If perf

Clinical and pathologic features of endometrial hyperplasia, pyometra, and endometritis in cats: 79 cases (1980-1985).

Records of 79 cats determined to have endometrial hyperplasia (EH) with or without pyometra or endometritis were studied. Forty-eight cats (61%) were spayed or died because of complications relating to reproductive tract disease. All other cats were free of clinical signs of disease, and lesions were found incidentally during routine ovariohysterectomy or at necropsy. Prevalence of uterine lesions was greater in cats greater than or equal to 5 years old. Breeding, age at first breeding, and queening could not be correlated with clinical or pathologic signs of disease. Seventy-one percent (34/4

Expression of Transforming Growth Factor Beta Isoforms in Canine Endometrium with Cystic Endometrial Hyperplasia-Pyometra Complex.

Cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) and pyometra are the most frequently diagnosed uterine diseases affecting bitches of different ages. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) has been classified in females as a potential regulator of many endometrial changes during the estrous cycle or may be involved in pathological disorders. The aim of this study was to determine the expression of TGF-β1, -β2 and -β3 in the endometrium of bitches suffering from CEH or a CEH-pyometra complex compared to clinically healthy females (control group; CG). A significantly increased level of TGF-β1 mRNA expressi

Retinal vascular calibers and correlations with biomarkers in bitches with pyometra-induced systemic inflammatory response syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Pyometra is a common uterine disease in intact bitches, frequently progressing to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). While retinal vascular alterations have been observed in human SIRS cases, similar evaluations are lacking in veterinary medicine. This study aimed to evaluate retinal vascular calibers in bitches with pyometra-induced SIRS (P-SIRS) and explore correlations between retinal measurements and hematological, biochemical, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and interleukin-4 (IL-4) levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective observational stu

Laparoscopic-assisted ovariohysterectomy for pyometra with concurrent endometriosis in a captive cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus): A case report.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive tract disorders are increasingly recognized in aging captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus), a species listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Pyometra is commonly reported in felids under human care; however, open ovariohysterectomy has traditionally been used for surgical treatment. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the first documented case of laparoscopic-assisted ovariohysterectomy for pyometra in a cheetah, with the incidental histopathological identification of endometriosis-a condition rarely reported in non-primate species and nev

Expression of AMPK and PLIN2 in the regulation of lipid metabolism and oxidative stress in bitches with open cervix pyometra.

The pathogenesis of canine pyometra is multifactorial, involving hormonal imbalances, aberrant immune responses, and metabolic dysregulation includes lipid metabolism and oxidative stress. This study focuses on lipid metabolism and oxidative stress, revealing the key regulatory role of AMPK and PLIN2 in canine pyometra. Bitches with open cervix pyometra (n:8) and healthy bitches undergoing elective ovariohysterectomy (n:4) were enrolled to the study. In experiment one, the serum and tissue levels of Malondialdehyde (MDA) and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) activity were assessed. Additionally, uter

Comparative genetic and pathogenic approaches of Escherichia coli isolated simultaneously from pyometra and urine of bitches.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) are widely related to pyometra and cystitis in dogs, and these infections can occur simultaneously. The goal of this study was to determine genetic and pathogenic insights of 14 E. coli isolated simultaneously from pyometra content and bladder urine of seven bitches. To achieve this, in silico and in vitro comparative analyses were conducted. Whole-genome comparisons demonstrated that E. coli isolated from pyometra and urine of the same animal were predominantly genetic extraintestinal E. coli clones belonging to the same Sequence Type and phylogroup. Escherichia coli isolated from pyometra and cystitis in the same animal exhibit a wide phenotypic similarity.

AIMS: Pyometra and cystitis caused by Escherichia coli are common diseases identified in canine or feline females. The origin of pyometra infection remains uncertain, and effective prevention strategies for this disease are still unknown. This study aimed to provide a phenotypic characterization, including antimicrobial resistance and virulence profiles, of endometrial pathogenic (EnPEC) and uropathogenic (UPEC) E. coli strains isolated simultaneously from the same animal. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sixteen E. coli strains, from eight different animals, were analyzed in this study. The antimicrobia
