Although human cases of rabies are exceptionally rare in Canada, rabies remains endemic in some animal populations thus creating the need for ongoing vigilance. Rabies has always been a shared responsibility among local, provincial/territorial and federal authorities, as reflected in the 2009 Canadian Rabies Management Plan. Since 2009, a number of changes in rabies management have occurred, including the development of new tests, an oral rabies vaccine for wildlife, lessons learned from recent animal cases and changes in federal, provincial and territorial responsibilities in 2014. AIM: The objective of this study was to analyze the epidemiologic monitoring of human rabies in the rabies medical center of Abidjan.
PATIENT: A cross-sectional study was undertaken based on files of patients having consulted in the rabies center after exposure and suspicion of human rabies between January 2001 and June 2009.
RESULTS: Twenty-six cases of human rabies were reported in 10,706,136 inhabitants (annual incidence of 0.028 cases per 100,000). The number of detected cases increased considerably after reinforcing the monitoring of the disease. Most cases occurred in an urban environm

Rabies in Asia is emerging as a serious public health issue. To explore the possible origin, phylogenetic relationships, and evolutionary dynamics of Asian Rabies viruses (RABV), we examined 200 complete nucleoprotein (N) gene sequences from RABV isolates in the region. Phylogeny supported the classification of Asian RABVs into five distinct clusters in lyssavirus genotype 1. Our geospatial and temporal analyses demonstrated that China appears to be the prime source of Asian RABVs. Understanding of rabies transmission and associated human activities, such as dog translocation, can help rabies

Serology remains the only way to monitor the effectiveness of vaccination of humans and animals against rabies. Many techniques for determining the level of rabies antibodies have been described, including seroneutralisation techniques such as tests for fluorescent antibody virus neutralisation (FAVN) and rapid fluorescent focus inhibition (RFFIT), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and in-vivo tests (the mouse neutralisation test, MNT). The need to verify the effectiveness of rabies vaccination has become widespread, particularly in the context of international trading of domestic car

A case of human rabies in the arctic zone of Siberia is described. The victim was bitten by a wolf, but characterization of the isolate by monoclonal antibodies showed that it was an arctic fox virus strain. This discovery reaffirmed the value of strain typing rabies virus isolates in regions where this has not been done already: such characterization pertains to the identification of the reservoir host, to the natural history of the virus in the reservoir, and to future surveillance, post-exposure treatment, and public education in the region.

In October 1978 in Boise, Idaho, a woman died of rabies after receiving a corneal transplant from a man, who in retrospect was also found to have died of rabies. Investigation of 203 contacts of these two patients identified 94 who were felt to have had sufficient risk of exposure to justify being given rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. Nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, and family members were at greatest risk. We discuss the problems encountered in determining risk of exposure for contacts of humans with rabies.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a preventable viral zoonotic disease with a near 100% case fatality rate once clinical symptoms appear. In Sudan, rabies remains a significant public health concern, exacerbated by limited resources and the ongoing armed conflict. Physicians play a critical role in rabies prevention and management, yet their knowledge and adherence to updated clinical guidelines remain poorly understood. This study assesses physicians' knowledge, and awareness of rabies disease, adherence to updated rabies prophylaxis guidelines, and clinical practices in Sudan.
METHODS: A cross-sectiona

OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to investigate the epidemiology of rabies in camels by collecting and analyzing data on its occurrence and applying laboratory confirmation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: During 2010-2022, data on the occurrence of rabies in camels, reported outbreaks, the number affected, seasonal occurrence, and outbreak management were collected and statistically analyzed. Data was collected from the Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries in Sudan.
RESULTS: During the study period, 11 outbreaks resulted in 24 clinically suspected cases of rabies in camels. The highest perc

Rabies is endemic in Sudan with continuing outbreaks occurring annually, the most common animals affected are dogs, followed by goats and equids. This work focused on equid rabies, to elucidate the current situation of the disease through analysis of reports of equid rabies outbreaks in Sudan during 2010-2022 supported by laboratory confirmation of the disease. During the study period, 66 animals were affected during 35 equid rabies outbreaks. The highest incidences were found in Al Gezira (30.3%), followed by Darfur (24.2%) and Kordofan (15.2%). The highest incidence rate was observed during

Rabies infects all mammals; however, transmission cycles are only maintained in certain bat and carnivore species. The high incidence of rabies in Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) observed in Namibia for over 40 years has led to postulation that independent virus transmission is occurring within this antelope population. We have analysed extensive experimental, epidemiological, phylogeographic and deep sequence data, which collectively refute maintenance of an independent rabies cycle in kudu. As rabies in kudu continues to have a negative impact on the Namibian agricultural sector, mea

UNLABELLED: Rabies is the most dreaded neglected zoonosis worldwide. It affects mostly developing countries with limited access to post-exposure prophylaxis and a low coverage of dog vaccination.
OBJECTIVE: This study estimates the burden of human rabies in Mali from the extrapolation of animal bite surveillance, mostly dogs, in the region of Sikasso and the District of Bamako in 2016 and 2017.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Monte Carlo simulations of a series of interconnected probabilities were used to estimate the burden of rabies. The data was collected from cross-sectional surveys of 8775 househ

Rabies is an acute neurological infection of humans and animals, caused by rabies virus and usually transmitted by animal bites. After an incubation period usually lasting weeks or longer, a variety of prodromal symptoms may occur. Encephalitic rabies (80% of cases) is associated with episodes of generalised arousal or hyperexcitability and hydrophobia, in which spasms involve the contraction of inspiratory muscles with swallowing. Paralytic rabies (in 20% of cases) is characterised by progressive lower motor neuron weakness. Laboratory investigations are important for confirming an ante morte

The Indian subcontinent comprises Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, the Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In all of these countries, except the Maldives, rabies is endemic. An estimated 59,000 people die from rabies each year; 45% of these deaths occur on the Indian subcontinent and approximately 33% take place in India. The majority of these deaths are attributable to dog bites, and those most affected are children and the poor. Access to post-exposure prophylaxis is limited and costly, the supply of immunoglobulins and vaccines can be irregular and public awareness of r
