The association between cardiac vagal activity and urinary catecholamine: Investigating the effect of race and sex.

Black individuals are at greater risk for the development of cardiovascular diseases compared to White individuals. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation has been identified as a significant risk factor contributing to racial disparities in cardiovascular disease, yet systematic racial differences that affect the measurement of ANS activity among White and Black participants are likely obscuring understanding about ANS-health disparity links. Moreover, sex differences in ANS activity have been observed. Thus, efforts to elucidate the comparability of ANS indices across race and sex are

Initial treatment for prostate carcinoma in relation to comorbidity and symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests the type of treatment received for prostate carcinoma is associated with comorbidity, but little information is available on associations with specific comorbid disease or symptoms. The authors examined the relations between treatment and comorbidity, specific comorbid disease, and symptoms. METHODS: Medical records were abstracted for 1054 male members of the Kaiser Permanente medical care program diagnosed with prostate carcinoma from 1975 to 1987. Information was obtained on demographic characteristics, comorbid conditions, symptoms, tumor stage and grade, and

Beyond Objectification: Understanding the Correlates and Consequences of Sexualization for Black and White Adolescent Girls.

Although objectification theory posits negative consequences of self-objectification for adolescent girls, few studies have tested how objectification and sexualization contribute to mental health for youth of color. Accordingly, the current study explores the relations among body surveillance, enjoyment of sexualization, and mental health for a sample of 473 Black and White adolescent girls (Mage = 15.21, SD = 1.43). As expected, body surveillance and enjoyment of sexualization were associated with various forms of diminished well-being. Race moderated two of these links, with Black girls who

Killin'em with kindness: "The porter" and Hemingway's racial cauldron.

"The Porter" brings us close to the nightmare plaguing white America's collective imagination during the 20th century's formative years, when white and black collided and racial definition conflated. Hemingway's piece about a young white boy, his father, and the African-American porter who serves them on an overnight train trip is an exploration of 20th century American race relations. Initially, Hemingway pushes the reader to see the world through the young boy's eyes, through the bifurcated lens of racial stereotype. But through the black porter's intervention, the reader comes to recognize

Associations of plant food, dairy product, and meat intakes with 15-y incidence of elevated blood pressure in young black and white adults: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study.

BACKGROUND: Consumption of plant foods and dairy and meat products may moderate increases in blood pressure. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate associations of dietary intake with the 15-y incidence of elevated blood pressure (EBP; ie, incident systolic BP >or= 130 mm Hg, diastolic BP >or= 85 mm Hg, or use of antihypertensive medication). DESIGN: Proportional hazards regression was used to evaluate relations of dietary intake at years 0 and 7 with the 15-y incidence of EBP in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study of 4304 participants aged 18-30 y at baseli

Reliability and Validity of a Material Resources Scale and Its Association With Depression Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men: The P18 Cohort Study.

Socioeconomic status (SES) is a fundamental cause of ill health, but an understudied determinant of health for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Surprisingly, few studies have examined the relations between poverty and depression among young MSM. The aims of this study were to determine the reliability and validity of an 18-item Family Resource Scale (FRS) as a measure of SES among YMSM and examine the relations between SES and depression, while taking into account factors associated with resilience or risk for poor mental health. Reliability of the SES scale was determ

Thyrotropin Levels Are Associated with Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Euthyroid Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Increased thyrotropin (TSH) levels and free triiodothyronine to free thyroxine (fT3:fT4) ratios, even within the euthyroid range, have been associated with cardiometabolic risk factors in adults but are less characterized in youth. This study sought to determine relations between TSH, thyroid hormones, and cardiometabolic risk factors in euthyroid adolescents. METHODS: Data were extracted from the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2007-2010, for univariate and multivariate analyses of TSH, thyroid hormones, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, lipid

How do global health research actors conceptualise inclusion in response to decolonisation calls? A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: There are growing calls to decolonise global health research (GHR). One way actors respond to these calls is through placing greater emphasis on inclusion. However, there is persistent confusion concerning the inclusion forms that address the decolonisation calls in GHR, the way they do, as well as the specific areas that should be targeted (and why) for the inclusion work. METHODS: This scoping review contributes towards clarifying inclusion forms that respond to the calls to decolonise GHR by reviewing 90 texts using thematic analysis. RESULTS: The review identified power imbal

Relations between caregiver messages about conflict management, youth beliefs about fighting, and firearm carrying, in an urban low-income community.

OBJECTIVE: Caregiver socialization is an important component of youth behavior development, yet little research has considered whether caregiver messages about use of fighting and nonviolent conflict resolution may be related to youths' beliefs about fighting and subsequent firearm carriage. This study examined the extent to which youths' beliefs about fighting moderated the relation between caregiver messages about how to manage conflict and youth firearm carrying. METHOD: Participants were 254 youth (ages 12-17; 56% female; 88% African American) drawn from a larger community-based study of

Is executive dysfunction a risk marker or consequence of psychopathology? A test of executive function as a prospective predictor and outcome of general psychopathology in the adolescent brain cognitive development study®.

A general psychopathology ('p') factor captures shared variation across mental disorders. One hypothesis is that poor executive function (EF) contributes to p. Although EF is related to p concurrently, it is unclear whether EF predicts or is a consequence of p. For the first time, we examined prospective relations between EF and p in 9845 preadolescents (aged 9-12) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study® longitudinally over two years. We identified higher-order factor models of psychopathology at baseline and one- and two-year follow-up waves. Consistent with previous research,

"Dancing on eggs": Charles H. Bynum, racial politics, and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, 1938-1954.

In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his law partner Basil O'Connor formed the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (NFIP) to battle the viral disease poliomyelitis. Although the NFIP program was purported to be available for all Americans irrespective of "race, creed, or color," officials encountered numerous difficulties upholding this pledge in a nation divided by race. In 1944, NFIP officials hired educator Charles H. Bynum to head a new department of "Negro Activities." Between 1944 and 1954, Bynum negotiated the NFIP bureaucracy to educate officials and influence their nat

Changes and challenges of the archives: researching early-twentieth century lesbianism in United States prisons during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Changes and Challenges of the Archives" is based on a still-in-progress master's thesis that I will complete by May 2021 at Sarah Lawrence College. The purpose of this article is not to come to any conclusions about the challenges of researching lesbian history during the COVID-19 pandemic but, rather, to explore how these world circumstances have further complicated the labor required of a lesbian historian. Many elements of this thesis and research are still in flux, including my investigation of the role race played in creating and developing a sexually deviant, criminalized definition of

Modeling the Impact of Race, Socioeconomic Status, Discrimination and Cognitive Appraisal on Mental Health Concerns Among Heavy Drinking HIV+ Cisgender MSM.

Prior research has attributed mental health disparities between marginalized and non-marginalized populations to socioeconomic differences (i.e., education, income, employment), stigma (e.g., HIV-related discrimination), and cognitive appraisal (i.e., optimism, hostility, satisfaction with life), but the relations among these variables have not been examined concomitantly. The current study utilized structural equation modeling to examine how race and socioeconomic status impact mental health outcomes through increased exposure to stigma and more negative cognitive appraisals. Data came from a

Quadratic relations of BMI with depression and brain volume in children: Analysis of data from the ABCD study.

BACKGROUND: Weight-related health conditions and depression peak during adolescence and show relations with brain structure. Understanding how these conditions relate to each other prior to adolescence may guide research on the co-development of unhealthy weight conditions (both underweight and overweight) and depression, with a potential brain-based link. This study examines the cross-sectional relations between body mass index (BMI), depressive symptoms, and brain volume (total and regional) to determine whether BMI has a linear or quadratic relation with depressive symptoms and brain volume
