OBJECTIVE: To assess bias in and consent before drug testing during prenatal care and birth in a hospital system with a risk-factor-based drug testing policy.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all patients who delivered in a regional hospital system from January 1, 2020, to June 1, 2022. Chart abstraction identified whether urine drug testing was performed and age, race, marital status, insurance status, ZIP code, gestational age, body mass index (BMI), and delivery mode. Propensity score matching through a pregnancy risk model was used to assess the association of race, insur

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading cause of maternal mortality. Racial disparities in maternal outcomes such as maternal mortality in the United States (US) are well-documented, but the relationship of racism and/or discrimination with one's risk of developing a hypertension during pregnancy (HDP) is not well-studied.
METHODS: Data from 17 sites that asked questions regarding experiences with racism and/or discrimination during pregnancy via the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) Phase 8 (2016-2020) was used. Logistic regression models were used com

AIM: This study aims to (1) describe trends in explanations provided for racial/ethnic inequities in dental caries and periodontitis, and (2) explore the patterns of relatedness among explanations for these inequities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Highly cited publications based on studies indexed in the Scopus database were retrieved and assessed for eligibility. Explanations for racial/ethnic inequities were classified into eight different, but interrelated domains. We assessed trends and examined the relations among explanations using multiple correspondence analysis.
RESULTS: A total of 200 ar

Public health researchers have directed increasing attention to structural racism and its implications for health equity. The conceptualization of racism as historically rooted in systems, structures, and institutions of US society has important implications for addressing social determinants of health (SDOH). It requires theorizing SDOH as embedded in and expressions of racially oppressive historical structures that are manifested in and maintained by policies, programs, and practices in multiple domains that dynamically intersect to reinforce and reproduce in new ways: race inequities in hea

INTRODUCTION: Although structural racism is strongly related to racial health disparities, we are not aware of any composite, multidimensional measure of structural racism at the city level in the United States. However, many of the policies, programs, and institutions that create and maintain structural racism are located at the city level. To expand upon previous research, this paper uses a novel measure to measure structural racism at the city level for the non-Hispanic Black population.
METHODS: We used confirmatory factor analysis to model the latent construct of structural racism for 77

Purpose: To determine the associations between state-level indicators of structural racism and incidence of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) among black and white women diagnosed with breast cancer. Methods: Black and white women diagnosed with breast cancer between 2010 and 2016 were identified from 12 states represented in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER18) program. State-level disparities were measured by black to white rate ratios in educational attainment, political participation, incarceration, and unemployment; and dichotomized to "high" or "low" structural rac

Most research on the effects of racism and discrimination on the health and well-being of African Americans utilize a deficit perspective, one that homogeneously paints African Americans as disadvantaged victims. Such approaches do little to highlight the variability in the effects of racism and discrimination on relevant outcomes, and the resources that African Americans have drawn upon to navigate an environment characterized by varying levels of racialized hostility. The goal of this special issue is to inspire more refined conceptualizations of how African Americans navigate an often-hosti

Structural racism negatively affects the health of Black populations in the U.S. Black populations experience a higher burden of oral diseases, such as tooth decay, periodontal disease, and oral and pharyngeal cancers than other racial groups experience. Oral health literature refers to racial inequities in the context of social disadvantage. However, structural racism perpetuates those contributory social disadvantages, such as inadequate access to affordable housing, education, and employment. In addition, in states where nearly 50% of U.S. Black populations reside, there is an inequitable d

BACKGROUND: This paper relies on data from the multilevel, sectoral discussions held among professional nursing and sociology individuals.
PURPOSE: To present the outcomes of a reflective process on racism in nursing education and practice in the cities of Toronto and Paris.
METHOD: The method used was a reflection on research conducted by eight individuals dealing with racism at distinct stages of their professional career. The reflections are organized as a systematic description of facts, noted feelings, appraisal of issues, analysis of learned lessons, and lead to recommendations for nur

The remnants of colonialism manifesting as structural violence, racism, and oppression continue to plague our society as evidenced by the persistence of health inequities, particularly for minority populations in the United States. As a profession bound by moral and ethical mandates, nursing must resist and deconstruct oppression in all its forms. Nurses, informed by critical race theory, intersectionality, and historical trauma, can become formidable allies with marginalized populations in the fight for social justice and health equity.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to discern the relationship between state-level structural racism and Black-White disparities in police shootings of victims not known to be armed.
METHODS: Using a Poisson regression, we evaluated the effect of structural racism on differences between states in Black-White disparities in fatal police shootings involving victims not known to be armed during the period from January 1, 2013 through June 30, 2017. We created a state racism index, which was comprised of five dimensions: (1) residential segregation; and gaps in (2) incarceration rates; (3

OBJECTIVES: We conduct a revaluation of the Thornhill and Fincher research project on parasites using finely-resolved geographic data on parasite prevalence, individual-level sociocultural data, and multilevel Bayesian modeling. In contrast to the evolutionary psychological mechanisms linking parasites to human behavior and cultural characteristics proposed by Thornhill and Fincher, we offer an alternative hypothesis that structural racism and differential access to sanitation systems drive both variation in parasite prevalence and differential behaviors and cultural characteristics.

Population health research on racial discrimination is hampered by a paucity of psychometrically validated instruments that can be feasibly used in large-scale studies. We therefore sought to investigate the validity and reliability of a short self-report instrument, the "Experiences of Discrimination" (EOD) measure, based on a prior instrument used in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. Study participants were drawn from a cohort of working class adults, age 25-64, based in the Greater Boston area, Massachusetts (USA). The main study analytic sample included 1

This special issue of the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, titled "Confronting the Impacts of Systemic Racism and Structural Oppression on Overdose and Substance Use Inequities," addresses the disproportionate burden of drug overdose and substance use impacts borne by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. While overall overdose mortality rates have fluctuated, deep racial inequities persist and are driven in part by structural oppressive forces, systemic and structural racism, and White supremacy. To move beyond traditional risk-factor epidemiology and reductive "gap gazing

Racial discrimination functions as a chronic psychosocial stressor that underlies racial trauma and elevates risk for mental disorders among racialized individuals. Emerging neuroimaging research has identified associations between experiences of racial discrimination and alterations in brain structure and function. However, the limited number of studies among racialized individuals constitutes a major gap in the scientific literature, leading to critical deficiencies in scientific knowledge, clinical practice, and informed public health strategies. This narrative review synthesizes findings f

For decades, scholars have critiqued the universalizing assumptions of classic attachment theory-particularly the work of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth-arguing for more culturally specific and historically situated frameworks of childhood development. Drawing on twenty months of ethnographic research with mental health professionals in peri-urban Cape Town, South Africa, this article shows how classic attachment theory affects clinical attention in a context of distributed caregiving practices shaped by racialized dispossession, displacement, and economic precarity. The article identifies two

OBJECTIVE: Racial trauma is increasingly recognized as a distinct, consequential source of psychological harm. However, most existing measurements that seek to capture experiences of racism focus on event frequency rather than responses. The Trauma Symptoms of Discrimination Scale (TSDS; Williams, Printz, & DeLapp, 2018) is one of few measures designed to assess distress symptoms related to racism. However, the invariance of the TSDS across identity groups (e.g., race/ethnicity and gender) has not yet been thoroughly evaluated. This article directly addresses that gap by assessing the TSDS's d

Culturally safe, racism-free healthcare is essential in Australia, yet Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to face inequitable access, experiences and outcomes. Although cultural safety is widely cited, implementation remains shallow and disconnected from patients' realities. We argue that meaningful cultural safety requires Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander governance, robust measurement and institutional accountability. Evidence shows that culturally unsafe care, including racism, creates psychological distress, leads to care avoidance and results in poorer outcomes, wh

OBJECTIVES: Racism is an important social determinant that disproportionately increases the risk of smoking among Black emerging adults. In today's digital era, Black emerging adults encounter online racism, including online racial discrimination (direct and vicarious) and exposure to racist content on systemic racism and race-related hate crimes. Yet, little is known about the relationship between online racism and smoking motives among Black emerging adults. Thus, we examined whether the associated anticipatory psychosocial costs (rumination, vigilance) would help explain the link between on

OBJECTIVE: To explore caregiver experiences of racism and bias in navigating the care of children with long-term ventilation via a tracheostomy (LTV).
STUDY DESIGN: Qualitative study with semistructured interviews of caregivers for children who initiated LTV in the previous 5 years at 4 geographically distinct academic medical centers. An interview guide was developed and deployed to include domains about the decision-making process, interactions with medical teams, transition to home, and the care the child received.
RESULTS: Thirty-one families with children from racially and ethnically mi
