LINE-1 in response to exposure to ionizing radiation.

It is becoming increasingly recognized that Long Interspersed Nuclear Element, 1 (LINE-1), the most ubiquitous repetitive element in the mammalian genomes, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of disease and in the response to exposure to environmental stressors. Ionizing radiation is a known genotoxic stressor, but it is capable of targeting the cellular epigenome as well. Radiation-induced alterations in LINE-1 DNA methylation are the most frequently observed epigenetic effects of exposure. The extent of this aberrant DNA methylation, however, strongly depends on a number of factors,

Parental exposure to medical radiation and neuroblastoma in offspring.

Previous studies have suggested an association between parental medical radiation exposure and increased incidence of certain childhood cancers. We investigated the relationship between medical radiation and risk of neuroblastoma in offspring using data from a North American case-control study. Cases were children diagnosed with neuroblastoma from 1 May 1992, to 30 April 1994, at Children's Cancer Group and Pediatric Oncology Group institutions throughout the United States and Canada. One matched control per case was selected using random-digit dialling. Telephone interviews were conducted wit

Reduction of radiation exposure in the cardiac electrophysiology laboratory.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of various protective measures on patient and operator radiation dose levels in catheter ablation procedures. Catheter ablation procedures are associated with significant radiation levels. The patient's skin and operator radiation levels were measured (1) at baseline, (2) after primary beam filtration by 0.3-mm copper sheet and 2-mm aluminium plate and implementation of the LocaLisa system, and (3) after reduction of the left anterior oblique fluoroscopic pulse rate and installation of a lead glass screen. Additionally, a comparative analy

Consideration on a limit for lifetime occupational radiation exposure.

Annual dose limits in occupational radiation exposure are merely a secondary constraint in addition to the primary rule of dose reduction and justification. The limits may, therefore, be reached only in rare, special cases. However, in principle, there might be cases in which the annual limit is continuously exhausted throughout a working life; a high total dose of 0.8 Sv could then be reached. In view of this possibility, there have been considerations of an added restriction by limiting the lifetime occupational dose to 0.4 Sv. The implications of such lifetime doses are considered, and it i

Prediction of LDEF exposure to the ionizing radiation environment.

Predictions of the LDEF mission's trapped proton and electron and galactic cosmic ray proton exposures have been made using the currently accepted models with improved resolution near mission end and better modeling of solar cycle effects. An extension of previous calculations, to provide a more definitive description of the LDEF exposure to ionizing radiation, is represented by trapped proton and electron flux as a function of mission time, presented considering altitude and solar activity variation during the mission and the change in galactic cosmic ray proton flux over the mission. [Combined radiation exposures and their immediate and late sequelae].

The author reviews correlations between the general and local processes and criteria for the diagnosis of acute radiation sickness (acute radiation syndrome) /ARS/ as well as other clinical sequels of radiation injury (radiation burns, abnormalities of critical organ function, stochastic sequels) induced by total even and uneven radiation and concomitant radiation effects. Based on the own observations the coefficients were defined of private correlations of the doses of the total gamma- and high-absorbable ("soft") components of concomitant radiation effects on the content of neutrophil leuko

Thyroid cancer: relationship to radiation exposure and to pregnancy.

Exposure to radiation results in an increased occurrence of nodularity to the thyroid and, more important, the development of cancer in a significant proportion of patients. Near-total thyroidectomy is recommended in those patients with a history of irradiation who are found on physical examination of the thyroid to have one or more nodules. Although pregnancy appears to have no effect on the course of thyroid carcinoma and the tumor has no effect on pregnancy, because of the numerous stimuli to thyroid growth during pregnancy, we feel that pregnancy is best avoided by women with known residua

Modeling the biological effects of combined radiation exposures.

Decades of experimental work have established combined radiation exposures as a distinct radiobiological problem of increasing interest in radiation protection, radiotherapy, and space radiation research. However, the corresponding modeling literature remains fragmented across methodological traditions and application contexts. Rather than providing an exhaustive bibliographic survey, this review synthesizes representative modeling approaches and classifies them according to their structure and intended use. The reviewed approaches include analytical and semi-analytical theoretical formulation

Environmental Exposures of Concern for Rheumatologists: Ultraviolet Radiation.

Climate change is increasing ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure, posing a significant threat to individuals with autoimmune diseases such as lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, and Sjögren's syndrome. UVR induces both local and systemic immune dysregulation through DNA damage, autoantigen exposure, and interferon-driven inflammation. While UVR's cutaneous effects are well studied, its role in systemic disease progression remains unclear. Limited epidemiologic data and inconsistent definitions of photosensitivity hinder clinical guidance. More robust research is needed to understand UVR's r

RADIATION EXPOSURE TO THE BACK WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF APRONS.

Physicians and nurses stand with their back towards the C-arm fluoroscope when using the computer, taking things out of closets and preparing drugs for injection or instruments for intervention. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the type of lead apron and radiation exposure to the backs of physicians and nurses while using C-arm fluoroscopy. We compared radiation exposure to the back in the three groups: no lead apron (group C), front coverage type (group F) and wrap-around type (group W). The other wrap-around type apron was put on the bed instead of on a patien

Radiation Exposure to the Thyroid After the Chernobyl Accident.

INTRODUCTION: The Chernobyl accident resulted in a considerable release of radioactivity to the atmosphere, particularly of Iodine-131 (131I), with the greatest contamination occurring in Belarus, Ukraine, and western part of Russia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Increase in thyroid cancer and other thyroid diseases incidence in population exposed to Chernobyl fallout in these counties was the major health effect of the accident. Therefore, a lot of attention was paid to the thyroid doses, mainly, the 131I intake during two months after the accident. This paper reviews thyroid doses, both the individ

An update on effects of ionizing radiation exposure on the eye.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has considered for over 60 years that the lens of the eye is among the most radiosensitive tissues, and has recommended dose limits for the lens to prevent occurrence of vision impairing cataracts (VICs). Epidemiological evidence that doses much lower than previously thought produce cataracts led ICRP to recommend reducing dose threshold for VICs and reducing an occupational equivalent dose limit for the lens in 2011, when only a single threshold of 0.5 Gy was recommended. On the basis of epidemiological evidence, ICRP assumed prog

Gene expression as a biomarker for human radiation exposure.

Accidental exposure to ionizing radiation can be unforeseen, rapid, and devastating. The detonation of a radiological device leading to such an exposure can be detrimental to the exposed population. The radiation-induced damage may manifest as acute effects that can be detected clinically or may be more subtle effects that can lead to long-term radiation-induced abnormalities. Accurate identification of the individuals exposed to radiation is challenging. The availability of a rapid and effective screening test that could be used as a biomarker of radiation exposure detection is mandatory. We

Medical diagnostic radiation exposures and risk of gliomas.

High-dose ionizing radiation is an established risk factor for glioma, but it remains unknown whether moderate- and low-dose radiation increase glioma risk. In this analysis, we assessed the evidence that self-reported exposures to diagnostic ionizing radiation, including computerized tomography (CT) scans, is associated with increased risk of adult glioma. While no independent association was observed for CT scans alone (3+ scans compared to none P = 0.08 and 1-2 scans compared to none P = 0.68), our findings suggest an increased risk of adult gliomas with cumulative exposure to three or more

[Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and the occurrence of cataract].

Radiation cataract is one of ensuing effects of ionizing radiation, since its threshold dose under which it does not occur, and above which it shows dose dependency, has been observed. Clinical course of radiation cataract is identical for all the types of ionizing radiation and is very typical. Minimal dose for progressive cataract formation is determined by the type of radiation, i.e., its relative biological efficacy, dose, and the duration of the exposure period. Theoretically, threshold dose existence does not exclude the incidence of cataract formation under significantly smaller doses,

Lead exposure in Mexican radiator repair workers.

BACKGROUND: Lead exposure was investigated among 73 Mexican radiator repair workers (RRWs), 12 members of their family (4 children and 8 wives), and 36 working controls. RRWs were employed at 4 radiator repair shops in Mexico City and 27 shops in Cuernavaca and surrounding areas. METHODS: Exposure was assessed directly through the use of personal air sampling and hand wipe samples. In addition, industrial hygiene inspections were performed and detailed questionnaires were administered. Blood lead levels were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). RESULTS: The mean

[Principles in the assessment of radiation exposure in interventional measures].

Interventional procedures undoubtedly involve a high radiation exposure, for the patient. For some interventional procedures the frequencies of procedures, radiation exposures and considerations to the radiation risk are shown and discussed. Radiation risk is calculated with the currently common assumptions but always in consideration of the age and expectation of life of the patient. The risk coefficient used for the age-distribution of the common population is 5% per Sv, but for the risk coefficient for, e.g., the group of PTA patients 1.0% per Sv can be derived. That's why the risk of cance
