Localization of mRNA for inflammatory cytokines in radicular cyst tissue by in situ hybridization, and induction of inflammatory cytokines by human gingival fibroblasts in response to radicular cyst contents.

The expression of mRNA encoding the inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha), interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-alpha) have been examined in radicular cysts by in situ hybridization. Furthermore, the biological activity of the contents of radicular cysts (RCC) has been assayed by adding extracts of RCC to cultured human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) and analyzing the culture medium for the release of inflammatory cytokines. In the epithelial layer, keratinocytes expressed all cytokine mRNAs examined at variou

Giant Radicular Cyst of the Pediatric Anterior Maxilla: A Rare Case.

Radicular cysts are inflammatory odontogenic cysts that arise from nonvital teeth due to proliferation of the epithelial rests of Malassez. Although they are commonly seen in adults, their occurrence in younger individuals is rare. This case describes a 13-year-old male who presented with pain, swelling, and pus discharge in the left maxillary region, associated with trauma-induced nonvital teeth. Radiographic evaluation revealed a well-defined radiolucent lesion extending into the maxillary sinus with displacement of adjacent structures. The involved teeth were managed with endodontic treatme

Inflammation-associated long non-coding RNA signature in radicular cyst tissues.

Radicular cysts are characterized by significant levels of changes in inflammatory biomarkers. Among them, interleukins and growth factors have been reported to be deregulated in radicular cyst tissues. Moreover, long non-coding RNAs are recently discovered non-coding RNA molecules that regulate various intracellular stimuli to keep homeostasis in balance. A growing body of evidence suggests that lncRNAs are significantly involved in the regulation of inflammation by targeting various inflammatory biomarkers. Accordingly, the present study was aimed to investigate the gene expression levels of

Management of Discoloured Anterior Teeth With Radicular Cyst: A Case Report.

Dental trauma often has tooth discoloration and periapical lesion as its sequelae. Intracoronal bleaching restores the aesthetics, while a retrograde approach is required for non-healing lesions. A patient with discolored teeth, draining sinus, tenderness and a periapical lesion on the radiograph was treated initially with conventional root canal therapy and walking bleach technique. After four months, the sinus tract reappeared and on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) examination, a large periapical lesion with loss of buccal cortical plate was seen. A minimally invasive retrograde cystic

Heterogeneity of fibroblasts from radicular cyst influenced osteoclastogenesis and bone destruction.

AIM: To analyze the heterogeneity of fibroblasts isolated from the fibrous capsules of radicular cysts and explore the effects of fibroblast subsets on bone destruction. METHODOLOGY: Radicular cysts were divided into groups according to varying perilesional sclerosis identified by radiograph. Colony-forming units (CFUs) were isolated from the fibrous capsules of cysts, by which Trap + MNCs were induced, and the expression of osteoclastogenesis-related genes was compared among groups by real-time PCR. The variances in gene profiles of CFUs were identified by principal component analysis, and t

Can lumbar hemorrhagic synovial cyst cause acute radicular compression? Case report.

Lumbar synovial cysts are an uncommon cause of back pain and radiculopathy, usually manifesting with gradual onset of symptoms, secondary to involvement of the spinal canal. Rarely, intracyst hemorrhage occurs, and may acutely present as radicular - or even spinal cord - compression syndrome. Synovial cysts are generally associated with degenerative facets, although the pathogenesis has not been entirely established. We report a case of bleeding complication in a synovial cyst at L2-L3, adjacent to the right interfacet joint, causing acute pain and radiculopathy in a patient on anticoagulation

Radicular cyst associated with a primary first molar: A case report.

Radicular cysts arising from deciduous teeth are rare. This report presents a case of radicular cyst associated with a primary molar following pulp therapy and discusses the relationship between pulp therapy and the rapid growth of the cyst. The treatment consisted of enucleation of the cyst sac and extraction of the involved primary teeth and 20 months follow up of the patient. Early diagnosis of the lesion would have lead to a less aggressive treatment plan.

Uncommon synchronous histopathological features of a radicular cyst: a case report.

Radicular cysts are the most common inflammatory odontogenic cystic lesions. It originates from epithelial residues in periodontal ligaments secondary to inflammation. The pathogenesis involves the activation of epithelial cell rests of Malaseez after physical, chemical or bacterial injury. Microscopically, the cyst is thin with smooth or corrugated inner surface. The most common epithelial lining is stratified squamous; with Rushton's hyaline bodies in 10% of the reported cases. Slow accumulation and deposition of cholesterol during the inflammatory process leads to the formation of "clefts"

Ki67 as a proliferation marker: A study on odontogenic keratocysts and radicular cysts.

Ki67 as a proliferation marker plays a critical role in assessing cellular activity in various pathological tissues, including cystic lesions. Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) and radicular cysts (RCs) are two common types of jaw cysts that exhibit distinct biological behaviors, particularly in their proliferative patterns. OKCs are known for their aggressive nature and high recurrence rate, while RCs are typically less aggressive and exhibit lower recurrence risk. By evaluating the expression of Ki67, a nuclear protein linked to cell proliferation, researchers can gain valuable insights into th

The correlated expression of COX-2 and keratin 15 in radicular cysts.

BACKGROUND: The expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and Keratin-15 (K15) in radicular cysts (RCs) is poorly understood. Identifying the expression of these two markers may modify the current treatment of RC. The objective of this study was to evaluate the expression of COX-2 and its relationship to K15 expression in the odontogenic epithelial cells of the RC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 18 RCs were immunohistochemically analyzed for COX-2 and K15 expression. The cellular inflammatory reaction in the cyst wall was also assessed by measuring the percentage of inflammatory cells to the t

Conservative approach in the management of radicular cyst in a child: case report.

Radicular cyst is the most common odontogenic cystic lesion of inflammatory origin. It is also known as periapical cyst, apical periodontal cyst, root end cyst, or dental cyst. It arises from epithelial residues in the periodontal ligament as a result of inflammation. The inflammation usually follows the death of dental pulp. This paper presents a case report of a patient with radicular cyst associated with a primary molar.

Simultaneous radicular cyst and mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the maxilla: a diagnostic nightmare.

We present a case of a 20-year-old woman presenting initially with an asymptomatic palatal swelling. Radiographic examination showed a cyst at the right maxilla with bucco-lingual expansion and perforation of palatal bone. Incisional biopsy was carried out via a buccal approach and the result revealed a benign odontogenic cyst, in keeping with radicular cyst. The patient was then scheduled for cyst enucleation. During the procedure, it was found that the palatal lesion was unrelated to the maxillary cyst. Incisional biopsy of the palatal mass was carried out and revealed a low-grade mucoepider

Experimental evidence supports the abscess theory of development of radicular cysts.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to experimentally induce inflammatory cysts in an animal model so as to test the hypothesis that radicular cysts develop via the "abscess pathway." METHODOLOGY: Twenty-eight perforated custom-made Teflon cages were surgically implanted into defined locations in the back of 7 Sprague Dawley rats. A week after the implantation of the cages, a known quantity of freshly grown, close allogeneic oral keratinocytes in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) was injected into each cage. One cage per animal was treated as the control that received only epithelial cel

Production of human-inducible nitric oxide synthase in radicular cysts.

To examine if nitric oxide (NO) is produced in radicular cysts, NO synthase (NOS) production was analyzed. Periapical tissues were removed from patients at the time of endodontic surgery. Frozen tissue sections were histologically evaluated with hematoxylin-eosin staining. Production of human-inducible NOS (iNOS) in apical cysts was then immunohistochemically examined. Immunoreactive human iNOS was widely distributed in epithelial cells, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, macrophages, or polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Remarkably, iNOS-positive cells were significantly present around blood vessels,
