Subcritical (hot/liquid) water dechlorination of PCBs (Aroclor 1254) with metal additives and in waste paint.

No disposal option exists for "mixed wastes" such as paint scrapings that are co-contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and radioactive metals. Either removal or destruction of the PCBs is required prior to disposal. Comparison of subcritical water dechlorination (350 degrees C, 1 h) of Aroclor 1254 in paint scrapings (180 ppm) and of standard Aroclor 1254 showed significantly enhanced dechlorination in the presence of paint. While no significant degradation was observed for standard Aroclor (no paint), the dechlorination of PCBs in paint was 99, 99, and 80% for the hepta-, hexa-,

Environmental radiological impacts of the nuclear industry from mining to construction, operation, and decommissioning of a power station.

The nuclear industry has had a good track record of progressively reducing occupational, public, and environmental exposures across the nuclear fuel cycle through the practical implementation of the as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) principle. Worker and public doses remain low, and environmental impacts are being better understood, although the environmental impacts continue to be low. However, more recently, the industry is concerned that there is pressure to continue to reduce exposures despite there being no justifiable reason. This is often because of radiation being considered in i

The continuing important role of radionuclide generator systems for nuclear medicine.

In this review, the continuing importance and status of development of radionuclide generator systems for nuclear medicine are discussed. Radioisotope costs and availability are two important factors, and both nuclear reactors and accelerator facilities are required for production of the parent radioisotopes. Radionuclide generator research is currently focused on the development of generators which provide radioisotopes for positron emission tomography (PET) applications and daughter radioisotopes for various therapeutic applications which decay primarily by particle emission. Generator resea

Unusual leg malformations in screech owls from a South Carolina Superfund site.

In 1995, the discovery of leg malformations in several screech owl (Otis asio) nestlings and in their female parent at a Department of Energy (DOE) Superfund site in South Carolina prompted an investigation into the nature of the observed abnormalities. Surviving nestlings and the female parent were transferred to a captive screech owl breeding colony at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD. The malformed female parent and her offspring were each mated with normal owls from the colony for 3 yr. Matings of the malfored female produced five malformed and six normal owls; all ow

Electricity generation: options for reduction in carbon emissions.

Historically, the bulk production of electricity has been achieved by burning fossil fuels, with unavoidable gaseous emissions, including large quantities of carbon dioxide: an average-sized modern coal-burning power station is responsible for more than 10 Mt of CO(2) each year. This paper details typical emissions from present-day power stations and discusses the options for their reduction. Acknowledging that the cuts achieved in the past decade in the UK CO(2) emissions have been achieved largely by fuel switching, the remaining possibilities offered by this method are discussed. Switching

[Status of hemapoiesis in residents of the Techa riverside villages in the period of maximum radiation exposure. Report 1. Evaluation of the cellular composition of peripheral blood and the role of comorbidities in the oppression of hemapoiesis].

Residents of the Techa riverside villages chronically exposed to ionizing radiation (the average dose rate in 1951-1956 was 0.047 Gy/year, the maximum reached 2.44 Gy/year) developed marked changes in the cellular composition of peripheral blood. The maximum reduction of peripheral blood counts occurred in the years 1951-1953, after which the beginning of the restoration of cellularity to the control level was observed. The dose rate at this point (1956) was about 0.02 Gy/year. The factors of radiation and non-radiation nature (gender, the age at the onset of exposure, health related disorders

Risk assessment of radionuclides in different environmental matrices in the State of Qatar, Arabian Gulf.

Environmental radioactivity in Qatar arises from a combination of naturally occurring radionuclides (NORM) and technically enhanced NORM (TENORM) associated with industrial activities. This study presents a comprehensive systematic review with quantitative synthesis of radionuclide concentrations across multiple environmental matrices, including soil, sediment, groundwater, seawater, building materials, and marine biota, extracted from research papers published between 1980 and September 2025. Data synthesis reveals those natural radionuclides such as 226Ra, 238U, 232Th, and 40K exhibit modera

Radiation accidents in the Southern Urals (1949-1967) and human genome damage.

A series of radioactive catastrophes (from 1948 to 1967) in the Southern Urals in the USSR led to intensive environmental contamination. Radioactive wastes were dispersed over the 20000 km(2) territory of four provinces-Chelyabinsk, Sverdlovsk, Tyumen' and Kurgan-due to the activity of the military facility that was built in 1948 for the production of nuclear bomb plutonium. The results of 50 years of investigations into the consequences of these disasters allow a general picture of the events that occurred to be reconstructed and allow the medical consequences of the irradiation of about half

The Chemistry, Recrystallization and Thermal Expansion of Brannerite from Akchatau, Kazakhstan.

Numerous studies expose the potential of brannerite to become a good matrix, concentrating fission products and actinides. Minerals can complement the data collected from the synthetic materials and offer an advantage of a long-time exposure to radiation. Natural metamict brannerite from Akchatau, Kazakhstan, and its annealed sample were studied by EPMA, Raman spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, XRD and HTXRD. The radioactivity of pristine and annealed samples of brannerite was measured. Brannerite from Akchatau is characterized by the absence of significant amounts of REE and yttrium. The studied branner

Applications of Capstone depleted uranium aerosol risk data to military combat risk management.

Risks to personnel engaged in military operations include not only the threat of enemy firepower but also risks from exposure to other hazards such as radiation. Combatant commanders of the U.S. Army carefully weigh risks of casualties before implementing battlefield actions using an established paradigm that takes these risks into consideration. As a result of the inclusion of depleted uranium (DU) anti-armor ammunition in the conventional (non-nuclear) weapons arsenal, the potential for exposure to DU aerosols and its associated chemical and radiological effects becomes an element of the com

Partitioning of radionuclides and trace elements in phosphogypsum and its source materials based on sequential extraction methods.

Phosphogypsum is a waste produced by the phosphate fertilizer industry. Although phosphogypsum is mainly calcium sulphate dihydrate, it contains elevated levels of impurities, which originate from the source phosphate rock used in the phosphoric acid production. Among these impurities, radionuclides from 238U and 232Th decay series are of most concern due to their radiotoxicity. Other elements, such as rare earth elements (REE) and Ba are also enriched in the phosphogypsum. The bioavailability of radionuclides (226Ra, 210Pb and 232Th), rare earth elements and Ba to the surrounding aquatic syst

Natural radioactivity in soil and concomitant hazards in the BSCIC Industrial Area, Jhenaidah, Bangladesh: a pioneering study.

Soil serves as both a repository and a pathway for natural radioactivity, influencing human exposure through the transfer of radionuclides into the food-chain and atmosphere. Industrial activities can further disrupt this distribution by introducing contaminants, potentially leading to environmental accumulation. This pioneering study investigates the activity concentrations of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) and assesses radiological hazards in soil from the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Industrial Area in Jhenaidah, Bangladesh. Thirty soil samp

Cesium transport behavior through engineered and natural barriers in a fixed-bed column system.

Radionuclides stored for extended periods in radioactive waste repositories can leach through engineered (concrete) and natural (granite) barriers. Isosaccharinic acid (ISA), a cellulose degradation product generated under high-alkaline conditions, can form stable complexes with radionuclides, adsorb onto rock surfaces, or reduce pore sizes, thereby accelerating radionuclide release. This study employs continuous fixed-bed column reactors packed sequentially with concrete and granite to evaluate the effects of various environmental conditions on cesium transport. The hydraulic properties of th

U and Co Dual Single-Atom Doped MXene for Accelerating Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Activity.

A large amount of radioactive waste is accumulated in the process of nuclear fuel preparation, causing serious pollution to the environment and abundant depleted uranium resources to be abandoned. One of the key issues affecting the development of nuclear energy is how to make full use of depleted uranium resources efficiently. Here, U element with unique coordination mode of 5f electron is spacer bonded to transition metal with 3d orbit through the adsorption and anchoring effect of MXene, thus U and Co dual doped MXene catalyst is constructed along with the comprehensive utilization of deple

Measurement of β-nuclides in various solutions using plastic scintillation microspheres.

BACKGROUND: Scintillation cocktails cannot directly measure samples with extreme acidity or alkalinity in β-nuclide liquid scintillation analysis. Plastic scintillation microspheres (PSm), as a novel scintillation material, offer the potential to overcome these limitations by allowing direct mixing with a variety of solutions for measurement, particularly in challenging chemical environments. RESULTS: This study evaluated the performance of PSm in various chemical environments, including four acids (nitric, hydrochloric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acids), an alkaline solution (NaOH), a high-sal

Efficient, electrochemical degradation of organic pollutants via nanofibrous Pt/Ir-RuO2 electrode with enhanced stability.

A diverse range of surfactants and chelating agents are frequently used in industrial processes, especially in the decontamination of nuclear facilities for decommissioning. To treat and degrade these organic pollutants, electrooxidation (EO) has emerged as a cost-effective method. Along these lines, in this work, a nanofibrous electrode was constructed to facilitate efficient EO. Among various metal oxide for EO, RuO2 is known for its excellent electrochemical activity, which was fabricated into a nanofiber structure with a large specific surface area and doped with IrO2 to increase its stabi

Decomposition mechanisms of nuclear-grade cationic exchange resin by advanced oxidation processes: Statistical molecular fragmentation model and DFT calculations.

The treatment and disposal of radioactive waste are presently facing great challenges. Spent ion exchange resins have become a focus of attention due to their high production and serious environmental risks. In this paper, a simplified model of cationic exchange resin is proposed, and the degradation processes of cationic resin monomer initiated by hydroxyl radicals (·OH) are clarified by combining statistical molecular fragmentation (SMF) model and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The prediction of active sites indicates that the S-O bonds and the C-S bond of the sulfonic group a

Review on algae-derived biopolymers to remove radionuclides from aquatic systems: sorption mechanisms, kinetics and stability.

The carboxyl, sulfate, phosphate and hydroxyl groups on algal biomass and its polysaccharides bind uranium, caesium, strontium and radium. The reported uranium capacities for brown macroalgae vary greatly depending on pH and pretreatment, ranging from roughly 150 to 560 mg/g. Green macroalgae and immobilized microalgae report much smaller uranium capacities, typically in the range of 75-290 mg/g. Certain microalgae remove 88-95% of dissolved 137Cs within 48 h. However, these values mostly stem from acidic, single-solute batch experiments. When the same material is used to test actual effluents
