Bowel disease after radiotherapy.

The clinical presentation, operative findings and outcome in 40 patients who required surgery for bowel disease after radiotherapy are presented. The type of presentation varied according to the time after radiotherapy. In the first month, many patients had a proctitis but none required surgery. Five patients were operated on within one month, 2 for radiation-induced acute ileitis and 3 for exacerbations of pre-existing disease (diverticular disease 2, ulcerative colitis 1). The commonest time of presentation was between 3 and 18 months after radiotherapy, when 20 patients needed surgery for b

Hypo-fractionated Radiotherapy (HF-RT) Versus Conventionally Fractionated Radiotherapy (CF-RT) for Glioblastoma.

Mycoplasma genitalium is known to cause nonchlamydial, nongonococcal urethritis in men and to be associated with pelvic inflammatory disease in women. Specific and sensitive PCR methods are needed for diagnosis of this bacterium because it is very difficult to culture from patient samples. To determine the bacterial load in patients' specimens, a quantitative real-time LightCycler PCR was developed. The housekeeping gene gap encoding glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase was chosen as the target gene. The assay could consistently detect five genome copies per reaction. To evaluate the PCR,

ESTRO technical guideline: intensity modulated radiotherapy and image guided radiotherapy for rectal cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) have become an integral part of standard care for rectal cancer, but evidence-based detailed guidance is lacking to support its clinical implementation and use. This European SocieTy for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) technical guideline aimed to assess the available evidence and provide recommendations for their use in rectal cancer treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ESTRO Lower Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer guidelines subcommittee formed a writing panel to address key questions (KQs) on the appli

Combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy versus surgery and postoperative radiotherapy for advanced hypopharyngeal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Although the standard therapy for locally advanced hypopharyngeal cancer remains surgery and postoperative radiotherapy (RT), alternative treatment approaches include induction chemotherapy and RT. The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the long-term outcome of these treatments performed in a single institution. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with advanced, resectable, squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx were treated with induction chemotherapy and definitive RT (group I), reserving laryngectomy for salvage. The induction phase of therapy consisted of 2-3 cycl

The impact of radiotherapy on the hypothalamo-pituitary axis: old vs new radiotherapy techniques.

Multimodality cancer therapy has led to remarkable improvements in survival of childhood and young adult cancer, with survival rates exceeding 85%. Such remission rates come with their own adverse sequelea or 'late effects'. Although the cause of these late effects is multi-factorial, radiation-related adverse effects are one of the most prevalent. Hypopituitarism is a recognised complication of irradiation of brain tumours distant to the hypothalamo-pituitary (HP) axis when the axis is included within the exposed field. Much of the data concerning the development of hypopituitarism, however,

Custom-made radiotherapy prosthesis for external and internal radiotherapy in a patient with lip cancer.

Definitive radiotherapy is an effective treatment for early-stage lip cancer. The goal of radiotherapy is to irradiate the cancer site effectively while protecting healthy surrounding tissue from the adverse effects of radiation. To this end, radiotherapy prostheses have been widely and effectively used. A maxillofacial prosthodontist working in collaboration with a radiation oncologist can create a custom-made radiotherapy prosthesis that minimizes adverse effects. This report demonstrates the successful use of spacers in external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy in consideration of the pa

Comparison of field-in-field radiotherapy with conformal radiotherapy for unilateral cervical malignant lymphoma.

This study compared field-in-field (FIF) radiotherapy with conformal radiotherapy with physical wedges for the treatment of unilateral cervical malignant lymphoma. Two treatment plans, the FIF technique and conformal RT, were generated for each of 32 patients with unilateral cervical malignant lymphoma. To compare the 2 treatment plans, dose-volume histograms of the planning target volume (PTV), the thyroid, submandibular gland, carotid artery, mucosa, spinal cord, and surrounding normal tissue, and monitor unit (MU) were analyzed. The FIF technique showed significant reduction in the mean dos

Adjuvant radiotherapy for endometrial cancer--a comparative review of radiotherapy technique with acute toxicity.

OBJECTIVES: The addition of pelvic radiotherapy to brachytherapy (EBRT-BT) in early-stage endometrial cancer is controversial and may cause unnecessary toxicity. The incidence of acute toxicity of EBRT-BT will have an impact on clinical decision and patient compliance but is currently poorly understood. This study compares the acute toxicities of EBRT-BT versus BT alone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-nine patients with FIGO Stage IA-II endometrial cancer who underwent adjuvant radiotherapy, (EBRT-BT or BT alone) from 2001 to 2011 were included in the study. Medical records of these patients

Radiotherapy for T1a glottic cancer: the influence of smoking cessation and fractionation schedule of radiotherapy.

The objective of the presented study is to report on retrospectively collected data on long-term outcome and toxicity and prospective assessment of quality of life (QoL) and Voice-Handicap Index (VHI) of patients with T1a glottic cancer treated with radiotherapy. Between 1985 and 2011, 549 patients were treated. Endpoints were local control (LC), toxicity, QoL and VHI. After a median follow-up of 93 months, the actuarial rates of LC were 91, and 90 % at 5- and 10-years, respectively. Continuing smoking (p < 0.001) and anaemia (p = 0.02) were significantly correlated with poor LC on univariate

Effect of endoscopic treatment for lesions in radiotherapy field after radiotherapy for rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Lesions manifesting after radiotherapy are difficult to treat. Significant inflammations often manifest at the rectal wall after radiotherapy, the rectal wall often experiences significant inflammation, and the intestinal cavity is typically in an edematous state. METHODS: This retrospective study included 22 patients who had previously undergone radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy and subsequently developed rectal lesions. All patients underwent either endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) or endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for lesion removal. Data on demographics, treatment mo

Compared with intensity-modulated radiotherapy, image-guided radiotherapy reduces severity of acute radiation-induced skin toxicity during radiotherapy in patients with breast cancer.

Radiotherapy (RT) is an effective treatment for breast cancer. The side effects of breast irradiation, including skin toxicity in the irradiation field, cause considerable discomfort. This study compared the severity of skin toxicity caused by image-guided RT (IGRT) and intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) combined with an electronic portal imaging device (EPID) in breast cancer. This study retrospectively analyzed 458 patients with breast cancer who had received RT. The patients were divided into two groups: 302 and 156 patients in the IMRT and IGRT groups. In the IGRT group, 8 and 148 patients had
