Testosterone-Lowering Medication and Its Association With Recidivism Risk in Individuals Convicted of Sexual Offenses.

For a particular subgroup of individuals with severe paraphilic disorders and a high risk of sexual recidivism, the combination of sex drive-reducing medications and psychotherapy is a promising treatment approach. The present quasi-experimental study aims at comparing differences in clinical characteristics and dynamic risk factors between persons receiving (+TLM, n = 38) versus not receiving (-TLM, n = 22) testosterone-lowering medications (TLMs). Individuals receiving TLM were more frequently diagnosed with paraphilic disorders. Neither the criminal history nor average risk scores differed

A Prospective Study on Self-Reported Psychopathy and Criminal Recidivism Among Incarcerated Male Juvenile Offenders.

The present study examines the utility of three self-report measures of psychopathic traits in predicting recidivism among a sample of incarcerated male juvenile offenders. Participants (N = 214, M = 16.40 years, SD = 1.29 years) from seven Portuguese juvenile detention centers were followed and prospectively classified as recidivists versus non-recidivists. Area under the curve (AUC) analysis revealed that the Antisocial Process Screening Device-Self-Report (APSD-SR) presented the best performance in terms of predicting general recidivism, with the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory (YPI) an

A Systematic Review of Criminal Recidivism Rates Worldwide: Current Difficulties and Recommendations for Best Practice.

OBJECTIVES: To systematically review recidivism rates internationally, report whether they are comparable and, on the basis of this, develop best reporting guidelines for recidivism. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Google Web, and Google Scholar search engines for recidivism rates around the world, using both non-country-specific searches as well as targeted searches for the 20 countries with the largest total prison populations worldwide. RESULTS: We identified recidivism data for 18 countries. Of the 20 countries with the largest prison populations, only 2 reported repeat offending rates. Th

Risk factors for criminal recidivism - a prospective follow-up study in prisoners with substance abuse.

BACKGROUND: Substance use in general has been shown to predict criminal recidivism. The present study aimed to examine potential predictors of criminal recidivism, including substance-specific substance use patterns, in prisoners with substance use. METHODS: A cohort of prisoners with substance use problems (N = 4,152) were assessed with the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) in the Swedish criminal justice system. Clients were followed for an average of 2.7 years. Criminal recidivism was defined as any return to the criminal justice system. RESULTS: During follow-up, 69 percent (n = 2,862) retu

Differences in personality and patterns of recidivism between early starters and other serious male offenders.

In this study, the differences in personality and patterns of recidivism were compared between individuals with an early incidence of offending ("early starters") and their later-starting counterparts ("later starters"). Results indicated that early starters were significantly different from later starters in several personality characteristics, as measured by the California Personality Inventory (CPI) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Specifically, early starters scored lower on the responsibility and socialization scales of the CPI and higher on the paranoia, schizo

Treatment and Recidivism Outcomes for Perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence: A Systematic Review of Typology Research.

This systematic review is the first to examine treatment and recidivism outcomes in relation to typologies of perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPV). Twenty-four (n = 24) studies presented treatment outcomes for different types of perpetrators, and n = 25 presented recidivism outcomes. Half of the studies that reported treatment (n = 12) and recidivism (n = 13) outcomes for different types classified men who used IPV using variations of the family-only/generally violent typology (including two, three, or four groups). Typology studies that examined treatment or recidivism outcomes als

Risk Tools Predict Recidivism for Men With Low Intellectual Ability and a History of Sexual Offending.

Standardized risk assessments are essential to evidence-based responses to criminal behaviour, including sexual offending. Since the 1990s, many actuarial and structured risk assessment instruments have been developed that are now routinely used in sentencing, treatment, and post-release risk management. The majority of these scales, however, were developed using undifferentiated groups, raising questions about their utility within meaningful subgroups, such as persons with low intellectual ability. This study presents meta-analytic findings of the predictive accuracy (discrimination) of risk

The Possible Role of Biofilm Formation in Recidivism of Cholesteatomatous and Noncholesteatomatous Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is typically classified into two distinct types: CSOM (without cholestetoma) and CSOM with cholesteatoma (CCSOM). The main microbial agents in both types are Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. It is believed that the virulence of the infecting microorganisms and their biofilm production capacity play a role in the chronicity and persistence of the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the pathogen microorganisms with their biofilm formation in CSOM, CCSOM, and their recidivism. MATERIALS AND

Recidivant odynophagia secondary to persistent esophageal candidiasis in an immunocompetent patient: the importance of brush cytology.

We present the case of a 53-year-old smoker woman without any relevant medical history who was attended as an outpatient due to several-month persistent odynophagia. An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed, showing white cotton-like plaques throughout the esophagus, suggestive of candidiasis. An esophageal brushing plus biopsy sampling were done, empirically prescribing oral fluconazole for 21 days. A viral serology was also requested, with negative results. Clinical improvement was present until the suspension of antifungal treatment, with an odynophagia relapse afterwards. Cultures

THE EFFECT OF HOUSING CIRCUMSTANCES ON RECIDIVISM: Evidence From a Sample of People on Probation in San Francisco.

The relationships between housing circumstances and recidivism are well established among people released from prison. Despite probation being far more common than prison or parole, we know little about living situations, homelessness, and residential instability among people on probation, and we know even less regarding how these housing circumstances may affect their risk of recidivism. Using a unique dataset of 2,453 people on probation and longitudinal analyses, this study finds that housing insecurity is common and is associated with an increased risk of recidivism among people on probati

Delays in surgery for cholesteatoma due to COVID-19: is there an impact on rates of recidivism and major complications?

PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between the waiting time for surgery, and cholesteatoma recidivism rates and major complications. The secondary aims were to identify any other prognostic factors for cholesteatoma recidivism. METHODS: A retrospective single-centre study of 312 patients who underwent cholesteatoma surgery under the care of a single-surgeon, between 2004 and 2018, was performed. Waiting times for surgery were categorised into ≤ 90 days, 91-180 days, 181-270 days and > 271 days. The outcome measures were cholesteatoma recidivism and major complications (facial nerve palsy o

Impact of a Multidisciplinary Team on Alcohol Recidivism and Survival After Liver Transplant for Alcoholic Disease.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders have a prevalence of 10% among the population of the United States and Europe and are one of the most frequent causes of liver cirrhosis in the Western world. Currently, alcohol-related liver cirrhosis represents one of the most frequent indications to liver transplant (LT), both as independent cause or associated with hepatitis C virus or hepatitis B virus infections. Starting from 2014, a multidisciplinary team involving surgeons, gastroenterologists, clinical toxicologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists was developed within the Modena Liver Transplant Ce

The Relationship Between Severe Mental Disorders and Recidivism in a Sample of Women Released from Prison.

Women are one of the fastest growing sectors of the prison population, and have different pathways into prison and differing needs during the reentry process when compared to men (Cloyes et al. J Forensic Nurs; 6:3-14, 2010b; Herrschaft et al. J Offender Rehabil; 48:463-482, 2009). Women report higher levels of mental health problems overall, and report more severe symptomatology (Cloyes et al. J Forensic Nurs; 6:3-14, 2010a; Hyde 2012; Lynch et al. 2014). The current study focuses on the role of severe mental disorders for women released from prison. Data collected from the North Carolina Div

Type of childhood maltreatment and the risk of criminal recidivism in adult probationers: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is strongly associated with delinquency and the repeated crime. Specific types of childhood maltreatment have been found to have differential effects on recidivism in juvenile offenders, but studies of adult probationers have not been performed. This study investigated the relationship between having a history of childhood maltreatment and mental-health problems and the independent contribution of specific types of maltreatment and mental-health problems to the criminal recidivism of adult probationers. METHOD: This study included 183 adult probationers (107

Community-Based Methadone Maintenance in a Large Detention Center is Associated with Decreases in Inmate Recidivism.

Because it is not common in the U.S. for jails to allow inmates to continue opioid medications that have been started in the community, we aimed to assess whether inmates maintained on methadone showed different rates of recidivism, lengths of incarceration, and types of offenses than other incarcerated groups. We also analyzed rates of return to home clinics after release. In order to answer these questions this study used extant data from 960 adult inmates in a large metropolitan detention center who were in 1 of 4 groups: general population with no known substance use disorders, alcohol det

Diffuse recidivant alveolar hemorrhage in a patient with hepatitis C virus-related mixed cryoglobulinemia.

A case of diffuse and recidivant alveolar hemorrhage is presented in a patient with hepatitis C virus-related type II mixed cryoglobulinemia with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. The patient was a 48-year-old white woman who suffered several outbreaks of pulmonary hemorrhage refractory to treatment with steroids, cyclophosphamide, azathioprine, plasmapheresis and interferon-alpha. The patient also presented persistent increased titers of immune complexes and rheumatoid factor with no histological hepatic alterations. Psychopathy, temperament, and character dimensions of personality as risk determinants of criminal recidivism in schizophrenia patients.

There is considerable evidence on the role of personality traits in the risk of criminal recidivism among schizophrenia patients, besides conventional risk factors. We evaluated the effects of psychopathy and biopsychosocial personality model on general criminal recidivism in schizophrenia patients. Ninety-four male DSM-5 diagnosed schizophrenia patients were recruited and classified into three groups according to the number of offenses since diagnosis: reoffenders (n = 32), Initial offenders (n = 31), and nonoffenders (n = 31). All subjects were evaluated by the Turkish versions of Psychopath

An Exploratory Study of Recidivism Risk Assessment Instruments for Individuals Convicted of Sexual Offenses in Singapore.

The predictive validity of risk assessment instruments for persons who have committed sexual offenses has improved tremendously in the last four decades, but the progress has been limited to Western offender populations. The aim of this study was to examine the predictive validity of Static-99R, Stable-2007, Sexual Violence Risk-20, Version 2 (SVR-20 v2), Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), and Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (LS/CMI) in predicting recidivism of persons convicted on sexual offenses in Singapore.
