Adaptive changes in sensorimotor processing in patients with acute low back pain.

In low back pain (LBP), primary care and secondary prevention of recurrent and persistent LBP are not always successful. Enhanced understanding of neural mechanisms of sensorimotor processing and pain modulation in patients with acute LBP is mandatory. This explorative fMRI study investigated sensorimotor processing due to mechanosensory stimulation of the lumbar spine. We studied 19 adult patients with acute LBP (< 4 weeks of an acute episode) and 23 healthy controls. On a numeric rating scale, patients reported moderate mean pain intensity of 4.5 out of 10, while LBP-associated disability in

Performance of neural networks for localizing moving objects with an artificial lateral line.

Fish are able to sense water flow velocities relative to their body with their mechanoreceptive lateral line organ. This organ consists of an array of flow detectors distributed along the fish body. Using the excitation of these individual detectors, fish can determine the location of nearby moving objects. Inspired by this sensory modality, it is shown here how neural networks can be used to extract an object's location from simulated excitation patterns, as can be measured along arrays of stationary artificial flow velocity sensors. The applicability, performance and robustness with respect

Brain Network Dynamics of Local and Global Predictive Processing in Aging.

Cognitive aging is widely associated with a progressive weakening of neural responses associated with predictive brain mechanisms. This view is supported by decades of electrophysiological studies reporting attenuated mismatch responses in older adults. Yet the literature remains inconsistent, suggesting that aging may not uniformly attenuate such responses. One possibility is that aging exerts differential effects depending on task demands. Here we aim to separate whole-brain networks underlying deviance processing in source-reconstructed magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from 37 younger and

The Estimation of Sagittal Plane Shoulder Flexion/Extension Posture Endurance Time and Repetition Endurance time on Drilling Tasks from Surface Electromyography (sEMG) Signals.

This paper explores the global issue of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs), impacting around 1.71 billion people worldwide. WMSDs, causing pain primarily in the neck, shoulders, and lower back, not only affect individual workers negatively but also result in increased productivity losses and societal costs. Current prevention strategies involve subjective surveys and ergonomic assessments using tools like RULA, REBA, and NIOSH lifting equation. However, these methods have limitations in pinpointing specific improvements for tasks, as evident in cases where high-risk tasks, accordin

Explainable artificial intelligence to diagnose early Parkinson's disease via voice analysis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting motor control, leading to symptoms such as tremors and stiffness. Early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment, but traditional methods are often time-consuming and expensive. This study leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques, using voice analysis to detect early signs of PD. We applied a hybrid model combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL), and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) to a dataset of 81 voice recordings. A Deep Learning Framework for Driving Behavior Identification on In-Vehicle CAN-BUS Sensor Data.

Human driving behaviors are personalized and unique, and the automobile fingerprint of drivers could be helpful to automatically identify different driving behaviors and further be applied in fields such as auto-theft systems. Current research suggests that in-vehicle Controller Area Network-BUS (CAN-BUS) data can be used as an effective representation of driving behavior for recognizing different drivers. However, it is difficult to capture complex temporal features of driving behaviors in traditional methods. This paper proposes an end-to-end deep learning framework by fusing convolutional n

Using deep learning to predict the hand-foot-and-mouth disease of enterovirus A71 subtype in Beijing from 2011 to 2018.

Hand-foot-and-month disease (HFMD), especially the enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) subtype, is a major health problem in Beijing, China. Previous studies mainly used regressive models to forecast the prevalence of HFMD, ignoring its intrinsic age groups. This study aims to predict HFMD of EV-A71 subtype in three age groups (0-3, 3-6 and > 6 years old) from 2011 to 2018 using residual-convolutional-recurrent neural network (CNNRNN-Res), convolutional-recurrent neural network (CNNRNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN). They were compared with auto-regressio, global auto-regression and vector auto-regr

Towards the automatic detection of activities of daily living using eye-movement and accelerometer data with neural networks.

Early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, improves treatment and care outcomes for patients. Early signs of cognitive decline can be detected using functional scales, which are written records completed by a clinician or carer, detailing a patient's capability to perform routine activities of daily living. For example, tasks requiring planning, such as meal preparation, are some of the earliest affected by early mild cognitive impairment. In this article, we describe work towards the development of a system to automatically discriminate and objectively quantif

Biophysically informed large-scale circuit modeling reveals region-specific microscale dynamics in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Objective. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is frequently accompanied by hippocampal sclerosis (HS) and involves widespread alterations in brain structure and function. However, most neuroimaging studies rely on single-modality data and provide limited insight into the microscale neural mechanisms underlying these changes. The relationship between structural connectivity (SC) and functional connectivity also remains insufficiently understood. This study aims to integrate structural and functional data to investigate microscale neural dynamic alterations in TLE.Approach. A biophysically informed re

Computing by Robust Transience: How the Fronto-Parietal Network Performs Sequential, Category-Based Decisions.

Decision making involves dynamic interplay between internal judgements and external perception, which has been investigated in delayed match-to-category (DMC) experiments. Our analysis of neural recordings shows that, during DMC tasks, LIP and PFC neurons demonstrate mixed, time-varying, and heterogeneous selectivity, but previous theoretical work has not established the link between these neural characteristics and population-level computations. We trained a recurrent network model to perform DMC tasks and found that the model can remarkably reproduce key features of neuronal selectivity at t

IPTGNet: an adaptive multi-task recognition strategy for human locomotion modes.

Complexities in processing human motion are possessed by lower limb exoskeletons. In this paper, a multi-task recognition model, IPTGNet, is proposed for the human locomotion modes. Temporal convolutional network and gated recurrent unit are parallelly fused through the dynamic tuning of hyperparameters using the improved particle swarm optimization algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that faster and more stable convergence is achieved by IPTGNet with a recognition rate of 99.47% and a standard deviation of 0.42%. Furthermore, a finite state machine is utilized for incorrection of

On Entity Embeddings for Ordinal Features as Representation Learning in Recurrence Prediction of Urothelial Bladder Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Urothelial Bladder Cancer (UBC) is a common cancer with a high risk of recurrence, which is influenced by the TNM classification, grading, age, and other factors. Recent studies demonstrate reliable and accurate recurrence prediction using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and even outperform traditional approaches. However, most ML algorithms cannot process categorical input features, which must first be encoded into numerical values. Choosing the appropriate encoding strategy has a significant impact on the prediction quality. OBJECTIVE: We investigate the impact of encoding stra

The physiology of mental representations: from single neurons to circuits.

Mental representations enable the brain to transcend the immediacy of sensory input and operate on internal models of the world. Working memory (WM) provides the neural substrate that maintains, manipulates, and accesses these representations over behaviorally relevant timescales. Early studies identified persistent neuronal activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) as a key mechanism supporting WM, arising from specialized recurrent microcircuits in which excitatory and inhibitory interactions sustain information in the absence of external stimulation. Subsequent research has rev

Drug Discovery in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Transformative Target-Based Approaches.

The complexities inherent in drug development are multi-faceted and often hamper accuracy, speed and efficiency, thereby limiting success. This review explores how recent developments in machine learning (ML) are significantly impacting target-based drug discovery, particularly in small-molecule approaches. The Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry System (SMILES), which translates a chemical compound's three-dimensional structure into a string of symbols, is now widely used in drug design, mining, and repurposing. Utilizing ML and natural language processing techniques, SMILES has revolutioni
