We report a case of Hodgkin's disease of the endometrium. The endometrial stroma is replaced by a polymorphic cellular infiltrate in which Reed-Sternberg cells are seen. The patient also has a history of stage IV-B Hodgkin's disease that was diagnosed and treated three years earlier. To our knowledge, Hodgkin's disease of the endometrium has not been described.

Formalin fixed and paraffin wax embedded tissue from 85 well characterised cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease were studied using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex technique. Among the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas all cases of B cell lymphoma were reactive with L26, a monoclonal antibody which is as yet an unclustered pan B cell reagent, with the exception of pre-B cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and malignant lymphoma plasmacytic. Eighteen well characterised cases of T cell lymphoma, selected to include tumours previously shown to exhibit cross reactivity with antibodies to

The Leu-M1 antigen has been recently proposed as a valuable immunodiagnostic marker of the Reed-Sternberg cells of Hodgkin's disease and to be particularly helpful is distinguishing Hodgkin's disease from other lymphoproliferative disorders such as peripheral T-cell lymphomas. In this study, the authors examined paraffin-embedded tissue sections obtained from 38 patients with previously well-characterized T-cell neoplasms for the presence of the Leu-M1 antigen. The cases comprised a spectrum of T-cell malignancies and were divided into four broad clinicopathologic groups: lymphoblastic lymphom

Nonrandom use of immunoglobulin variable (V) gene segments is a feature of some B-cell neoplasms, possibly as a consequence of antigen selection. In Hodgkin's disease, the primary tissues, cell lines, and even single Reed-Sternberg cells can carry immunoglobulin gene rearrangements. Here, we examined the immunoglobulin heavy-chain genes of a well-characterized Hodgkin's-derived cell line, L428, and found a hypermutated VH32 gene involving a conventional V(N)D(N)J4-C gamma 4 rearrangement. VH32 is one of two rearranging members of the VH5 family that is also rearranged preferentially in some B-

Specific cutaneous involvement in Hodgkin lymphoma is rare. In cutaneous lesions, the diagnosis is usually based on the recognition of diagnostic Reed-Sternberg cells and its variants. In nodal Hodgkin lymphoma, so-called mummified cells (cells with condensed cytoplasm and pyknotic eosinophilic or basophilic nuclei) are often seen. They are sometimes conspicuous and easy to recognize, thus serving as a clue to the diagnosis. Our objective was to study cases of cutaneous Hodgkin lymphoma to identify the occurrence of mummified cells. We studied 12 patients (4 women and 8 men; age range 23-80 ye

We report the flow cytometric (FC) identification and characterization of lymphocyte predominant (LP) cells from tissues involved by nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL). First, we immunophenotyped the NLPHL cell line (DEV) confirming a germinal center immunophenotype, lack of expression of CD32 and CD58, and expression of CD54. Nineteen of 26 lymph nodes involved by NLPHL demonstrated a population with an LP immunophenotype (73%), which included expression of germinal center markers (CD75/Bcl-6-positive, CD32-weak/negative without CD10), a B-cell immunophenotype (CD19/CD20/

Classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) consists of a heterogeneous group of haematological disorders that covers undifferentiated B cell neoplasms originating from germinal centre B cells. The HL molecular characterization still represents an ongoing challenge due to the low fraction of tumour Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg cells mixed with a plethora of non-tumour haematological cells. In this scenario, next generation sequencing of liquid biopsy samples is emerging as a useful tool in HL patients' management. In this review, we aimed to overview the clinical and methodological topics regarding the imple

Thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC) has been identified as a lymphocyte-directed CC chemokine that attracts activated T-helper type 2 (Th2) cells in humans. Recent studies showed that the T cells surrounding Reed-Sternberg cells in Hodgkin's lymphomas (HL) are Th2 type. Anaplastic large cell lymphomas (ALCL), T-cell-rich B-cell lymphoma (TCRBCL) can mimic HL in some instances. This study aimed to establish the pattern of TARC expression in these diseases. Immunohistochemical stain using a polyclonal goat anti-human antibody to TARC was performed on 119 cases of confirmed HL; 99 we

Hodgkin's disease is commonly associated with EBV latent infection. The incidence of EBV reactivation (active infection or EBV infection with replicative cycle) was evaluated in a series of 30 patients with untreated Hodgkin's disease (except for one case with chronic lymphocytic leukemia) by quantitation of EBV DNA and titration of anti-ZEBRA antibodies in serum samples. DNA was detected in serum (>2.5 x 10(2) genomes/ml) in 15 of 30 patients and was more frequent in Hodgkin's disease with EBV-positive Reed-Sternberg cells (10/12) than in EBV-negative cases (5/18), (P< 0.01). Of interest was

Four hundred and two cases considered or suspected to be lymphoepithelioid cell lymphoma (Lennert's lymphoma) were analyzed morphologically, immunohistochemically, and clinically. One hundred and eight of these cases, investigated in 180 biopsies, fulfilled the morphological and immunohistochemical criteria for lymphoepithelioid cell lymphoma and are herein reported. Cellular composition and histological structure are described in detail as a basis for discriminating Lennert's lymphoma from similar lymphomas with a high content of epithelioid cells (Hodgkin's disease, AILD type of T-cell lymph

A patient who developed Hodgkin's disease after an 11-year remission of marginal zone B-cell (MZB) lymphoma (low grade B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type) is presented. Except for L26/CD20 expression by Reed-Sternberg cells, morphologic, immunophenotypic, and genotypic findings were compatible with the diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease. The relationship between Hodgkin's disease and the preceding MZB lymphoma in this patient is discussed.

Classical Hodgkin lymphoma represents a paradigm of tumor cell-microenvironment interactions as the neoplastic Hodgkin Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells typically constitute less than 1% of the total tumor volume. CTLA-4, a member of the CD28/B7 immunoglobulin superfamily, and CD28 and their ligands B7-1 and B7-2 are critically important for the initial activation of naive T cells. Strategies aimed at interfering with the crosstalk between tumoral Reed-Sternberg cells and their cellular partners have been taken into account in the development of new immunotherapies that target different cell componen

INTRODUCTION: Hodgkin cell leukemia is a rare phenomenon in which Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg cells circulate the peripheral blood. Few cases were reported but no modern case series is available in the literature.
METHODS: Peripheral blood smears from patients diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) at our institution were reviewed. Relevant clinical and pathologic parameters were collected and compared with reported cases in the literature.
RESULTS: Seven patients were identified over a period of 8 years. All patients were males with a median age of 35 years. The diagnosis was classic HL in six

Classic Hodgkin lymphoma is a unique B-cell derived malignancy featuring rare malignant Hodgkin and Reed Sternberg (HRS) cells that are embedded in a quantitively dominant tumor microenvironment (TME). Treatment of classic Hodgkin lymphoma has significantly evolved in the past decade with improving treatment outcomes for newly diagnosed patients and the minority of patients suffering from disease progression. However, the burden of toxicity and treatment-related long-term sequelae remains high in a typically young patient population. This highlights the need for better molecular biomarkers aid

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a unique type of hematopoietic cancer that has few tumor cells but a massive infiltration of immune cells. Findings on how the cancerous Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells survive and evade immune surveillance have facilitated the development of novel immunotherapies for HL. Trogocytosis is a fast process of intercellular transfer of membrane patches, which can significantly affect immune responses. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of how trogocytosis contributes to the suppression of immune responses in HL. We focus on the ectopic expression of C

We present a case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma CD5 negative, Cyclin D1 positive presenting as ruptured spleen in a 63-year-old man requiring emergent splenectomy. Tumor cells showed marked pleomorphism, anaplasia, and increased mitotic figures with positive Cyclin D1, BCL6, MUM1, P53, and a high MIB1 proliferative fraction. The patient received multiple therapies and ultimately died. This case raises the differential diagnoses of pleomorphic mantle cell lymphoma and other aggressive lymphomas with pleomorphic, anaplastic, and Reed-Sternberg-like cells.

Primary larynx lymphomas, specifically of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue, are a rare but documented phenomenon. Transformation of any type of lymphoma that has the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells is unusual in lymph nodes and exceptional in extranodal sites. Herein, we report the first case (to the best of our knowledge in a review of the English literature [MEDLINE 1966-2001]) in which both of these unusual findings are present; that is, an extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of laryngeal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue with Hodgkin-like transformation. The patient is a 78-year

CONTEXT.—: The diagnosis of classic Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL) traditionally requires surgical tissue biopsy because of the paucity of diagnostic Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg cells. Diagnosis can be challenging in small core needle and cytologic biopsies, which are increasingly used because of reduced costs and minimal invasiveness. Flow cytometric (FC) identification of Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg cells is possible, but FC test efficacy is not well studied outside of validation settings, especially in small specimens.
OBJECTIVE.—: To assess the testing efficacy of FC performed on small biopsy and c
