Small study sizes are a limiting factor in assessing outcome measures in pediatric cardiology. It is even more difficult to assess the outcomes of congenital catheterizations where the sample sizes are even smaller, particularly on a individual institutional level. The creation of multicenter registries is a method by which investigators can pool data to better assess quality and outcome measures of these procedures. No registry is perfect with several being available today, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. In addition, there are a multitude of methods currently used to assess quali

The importance of registries is vital for almost every human disease but crucial for rare disorders, where the centralized collection, organization, and quality check of data create a platform from where multiple analyses and scientific advances are possible. In this article, the authors review the creation of the United States Immunodeficiency Network registry, its role, and the numerous scientific achievements generated from the collective effort of many.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There are many limitations to performing clinical research with high levels of evidence in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS), such as randomization into surgical groups and sample size recruitment. Therefore, additional avenues for exploring research should be explored using big data, from databases to registries. Other organizations have developed these tools in the evolving landscape of outcomes measurement and value in healthcare, which may serve as models for our specialty.
RECENT FINDINGS: Over the last 5 years, FPRS literature of large-scale outcomes re

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to analyse the incidence of lip malignancies in Germany.
METHODS: Data from population-based cancer registries covering a population of 39 million inhabitants from 14 federal states were pooled. Lip malignancies were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Age-standardised incidence rates and annual percentage changes in the incidence trends of lip cancer (C00), melanoma of the lip (C43.0), and non-melanoma skin cancer of the lip (C44.0) were calculated.
RESULTS: Lip cancer (C00) incidence rate was 0.57/0.15 p

Oral clefts are one of the most common birth defects in humans. However, few population-based studies of these defects have been carried out in Turkey. Our objective was to determine the registries of cases of cleft lip and palate. All cases of cleft lip and palate referred to central state hospitals in Denizli between January 2000 and May 2010 were investigated retrospectively. Anomalies were determined and classified according to the ICD-10 coding system. A total of 194 cases were identified consisting of 92 females (47.4%), 100 males (51.6%), and 2 subjects of undetermined gender (1%) with

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterised by increased pressure in the pulmonary arteries leading to right-sided ventricular failure, and death. Identification of factors that affect patient survival is important to improve patient management and outcomes. The first registry to evaluate survival and develop a prognostic model was the National Institutes of Health (NIH) registry in 1981. Importantly this prognostic model is based on data collected prior to availability of PAH-targeted therapies and does not reflect survival rates for treated patients. Since the 1980s, however, four

AIM: To determine the prevalence and incidence of diagnosed coeliac disease (CD) in Danish children and adolescents and to describe trends over time.
METHODS: All children with a CD diagnosis registered in the Danish National Patient Registry (DNPR) were included in the study. Data were validated by combining this information with registrations of small-bowel biopsies in the National Registry of Pathology (NRP) and with a selected sample of hospital records.
RESULTS: Data were obtained from 1996 to 2010. The prevalence of CD registered in DNPR increased from 43.2 [95% CI 39.3-47.1] to 83.6 [

Recent advances in endovascular technologies have made catheter-based interventions a preferred treatment strategy in patients with intermittent claudication or ischemic rest pain of the lower extremity. Although the current body of literature is inundated with clinical reports favoring countless endovascular devices and treatment techniques for femoropopliteal occlusive disease, analysis of available clinical reports regarding femoropopliteal lesions can be an overwhelming undertaking. In this report, we examine various challenges associated with data interpretation of clinical literature on

Stroke remains the leading cause of disability in adults and the third leading cause of death in the US. Carotid artery (CA) occlusive disease is the primary pathophysiological source of 10 to 20% of all strokes. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with both symptomatic and asymptomatic extracranial CA stenosis. Carotid artery angioplasty and stent placement has recently emerged as an alternative to CEA for primary and secondary prevention of stroke related to CA stenosis. With the advent of the embolic protection device, the safety of CA angiop

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the prenatal detection of gastrointestinal obstruction (GIO, including atresia, stenosis, absence or fistula) by routine ultrasonographic examination in an unselected population all over Europe.
METHODS: Data from 18 congenital malformation registries in 11 European countries were analysed. These multisource registries used the same methodology. All fetuses/neonates with GIO confirmed within 1 week after birth who had prenatal sonography and were born during the study period (1 July 1996 to 31 December 1998) were included.
RESULTS: There were 670 793 births in the ar

A computer system for the management and analysis of clinical data is described. The system is implemented in the ANSI standard MUMPS language and runs on popular minicomputers. The system is designed to allow clinical investigators or research assistants to define a data base, enter and edit data, produce patient-specific reports, and perform a variety of analyses on user-specified groups of subjects. Programmer intervention is not required at any stage of the management or analysis process, and on-line documentation provides a friendly environment for inexperienced users.

Molecular pathology has become central to precision oncology, but German cancer registry data structures were designed for simpler molecular findings. This study argues that registries need a minimal, structured, and interoperable representation of molecular variants that remains compatible with data minimization and existing reporting infrastructures. Using the German oncology core dataset (nationally standardized oncological core dataset for cancer reporting-einheitlicher onkologischer Basisdatensatz [oBDS]) as an example, we outline conceptual principles for a backward-compatible molecular

Rare disease registries in Brazil remain fragmented across federal, state, and local initiatives, limiting the availability of reliable epidemiological information to support diagnosis, care planning, research, and public policy. This study aimed to map existing rare disease registry entities and registry-related initiatives in Brazil and to propose practical guidelines for their unification into an integrated national registry. We conducted a descriptive, exploratory mapping study combining a structured literature search with documentary analysis of public policies, health information systems

BACKGROUND: Total joint arthroplasties (TJAs), including total knee (TKA) and total hip (THA), are common treatments for end-stage arthritis, significantly improving patients' quality of life (QoL). Clinical TJA registries play a critical role in monitoring implant performance, revision surgeries, postoperative complications, and long-term outcomes and patient-reported outcomes (PROs). However, the lack of a standardized data collection framework limits data integration, interoperability, and comparison across healthcare systems and studies. This study aims to establish a minimum data set (MDS

BACKGROUND: Pediatric postoperative opioid prescribing remains a modifiable source of harm, but procedure-specific national prescribing patterns, interhospital variability, and high-yield stewardship targets are not well defined.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study used January to December 2023 data from NSQIP-Pediatric and the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) for nonneonate children aged 0 to 17 years undergoing surgery. Procedure groups were defined by CPT code. Outcomes were opioid prescription proportion (OPP), prescribing practice variability (interquartile range of h

Despite their value for public health, research, and care, population-based registries for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) remain limited. We conducted a scoping review of dementia registry studies through December 2023 and identified population-based dementia registries in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries. We characterized their structure and scope, assessed key themes, and developed recommendations for registry development. We identified 21 population-based dementia registries from a review of 235 publications. These registries help fill gaps

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of prevalence and epidemiology of cystic fibrosis (CF) and healthcare resource use among Finnish people with CF is incomplete.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based matched cohort study using retrospective real-world data from linked Finnish national registries. Electronic healthcare data and drug purchases of 102 people with CF were analyzed between January 2015 and December 2019 (follow-up). A 5-fold control population was matched by sex, age, and place of residence. Comorbidities and medication use that occurred at any time during follow-up were assessed; annual ra
