Thiacetarsamide depresses relaxation of canine pulmonary artery in vitro.

Little information is available on the primary pharmacological effects of thiacetarsamide on mammalian systems, particularly on blood vessels. The effects of thiacetarsamide on arterial responses was studied in isolated rings from canine pulmonary artery. Vessels were exposed to thiacetarsamide and dose-response relationships were applied to methacholine and nitroglycerin. To rule out non-specific effects of antihelmintics, the effects of two other antifilarial drugs, diethylcarbamazine and ivermectin, were also tested. Thiacetarsamide significantly depressed relaxation of canine pulmonary art

The squirrel monkey: an animal model of pelvic relaxation.

OBJECTIVE: Casual observations of pelvic prolapse have previously been made in adult female squirrel monkeys. We objectively observed and described the pelvic findings of the adult females in our colony to evaluate their potential as an animal model for studies of pelvic relaxation. STUDY DESIGN: Subsets of a group of 28 adult female squirrel monkeys were examined on three separate occasions and photographed to document perineal findings. Four areas of loss of support in the vagina were described, including the urethra, anterior segment, cervix, and posterior segment. The degree of loss of su

Behavioral relaxation training for tremor disorders in older adults.

Two adult men, aged 86 and 63, with essential tremor and Parkinson's-disease-related tremor, respectively, were provided Behavioral Relaxation Training in reclined and upright seated positions. Multiple measures were recorded, including the Behavioral Relaxation Scale (BRS), clinical and self-rated tremor severity, informant ratings, ratings of disability in activities of daily living (ADL), and forearm EMG. Results showed increased relaxation skills on the BRS, with reductions in EMG, tremor ratings, and some ADL disabilities. Upright BRS scores did not change during reclined training, but im

Application of the relaxation technique in general hospital psychiatry.

The present article demonstrates the clinical application and the efficacy of relaxation techniques in general hospital psychiatry in Japan. During April to December 1993, 20 patients were treated with progressive muscle relaxation and "modified' autogenic training therapies. The targeted symptoms were anxiety attacks (or panic attacks), neurotic insomnia, hyperventilation syndrome, agoraphobia, chronic pain, and distress. Most patients (18/20) improved rapidly with the use of these techniques and their excellence encourages increased use in general hospital psychiatry for the following reason

Jaw relaxation after a halothane/succinylcholine sequence in children.

BACKGROUND: Lack of complete jaw relaxation after a halothane-succinylcholine sequence has been described in the literature. To date, however, most existing studies are retrospective, and lack agreement on the magnitude and incidence of this phenomenon. This prospective study examined the incidence and degree of incomplete jaw relaxation in 500 children who were given intravenous succinylcholine during halothane anesthesia. METHODS: Five hundred consecutive unmedicated children received a minimum dose of 2 mg/kg intravenous succinylcholine after induction of anesthesia with halothane. The deg

Frequency dependence of MR relaxation times. I. Paramagnetic ions.

T1 and T2 of paramagnetic ions in free and chelated form were measured over the range of clinical magnetic resonance imaging field strengths (0.02-1.5 T). T1 values agreed with published data; however, to our knowledge, the field dependence of T2 has not been systematically studied before Mn2+, Cr3+, and Fe3+ all showed T2 reduction at high field strengths, although reduction due to Fe3+ was minimal. This is believed to be due to "contact" interactions, which have been previously noted for manganese. No such T2 reduction was seen in the chelates, except that dysprosium chelate (but not free io

Involvement of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide in gastric reflex relaxation.

We have previously presented evidence for a non-adrenergic, vagally mediated colono-gastric inhibitory reflex induced by distension of the colon. We also found that pain stimulation by putting pressure on a testicle induced a pronounced gastric relaxation mediated by both adrenergic and vagal non-adrenergic fibres in anesthetized rats. Previous in vitro studies by other workers have strongly indicated that vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) is a neural mediator of gastric relaxation. The aim of the present in vivo study was to investigate, in anesthetized rats, whether VIP is involved in

[Evaluation of left ventricular relaxation by mitral regurgitant curve].

To examine whether left ventricular (LV) isovolumic relaxation can be assessed noninvasively using a continuous-wave Doppler technique, we compared Doppler-determined parameters derived from mitral regurgitation (MR) velocity curve with micromanometer-derived indices of LV relaxation, peak negative dP/dt and tau, in 9 patients with MR (5 with dilated cardiomyopathy, 2 with old myocardial infarction and 2 with rheumatic MR). The rate of LV pressure decay (delta P/delta t) at aortic valve closure was calculated from the recordings of MR jet velocities based on the simplified Bernoulli equation.

Stress relaxation of the respiratory system in developing piglets.

To characterize the effect of postnatal development on the viscoelastic behavior of the respiratory system, we quantified the amplitude and time course of stress relaxation in the lungs and chest wall of seven newborn and eight 8-wk-old anesthetized piglets. Stress relaxation was distinguished from other dissipative pressure losses by performing airway occlusions at various constant inspiratory flows and fitting the pressure decays that ensue during the occlusions to a double-exponential function. We found that the amplitude of stress relaxation related linearly to the increase in elastic reco

Integrating music in breathing training and relaxation: II. Applications.

Psychophysiological observations, especially PETCO2 and EEG, during relaxation training with deep-diaphragmatic breathing and mental imagery, suggest that the addition of certain types of music "deepens" breathing and quickens relaxation: PETCO2 "normalizes" with decreased respiration rate, and EEG shows decreased average theta and increased alpha. The combined psychophysiological indices suggest that music potentiates the hypometabolic counterarousal state. And clients unanimously report that they enjoy it.

Risk factors for myocardial infarction: the importance of relaxation.

Several risk factors for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were examined, including history of smoking and hypercholesterolemia, income, education, coronary-prone behaviour by Structured Interview (SI) and the type and quality of stress-reducing relaxing activities, in a case-control study. Our sample included 100 AMI patients (80 males and 20 females, with mean ages 57.3 and 64.1 years, respectively), as well as 100 age- and sex-matched controls. Univariate differences between cases and controls were significant for history of smoking, income level, SI-defined hostility, SI-defined suppressio

Isovolumic relaxation time varies predictably with its time constant and aortic and left atrial pressures: implications for the noninvasive evaluation of ventricular relaxation.

The isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT) is an important noninvasive index of left ventricular diastolic function. Despite its widespread use, however, the IVRT has not been related analytically to invasive parameters of ventricular function. Establishing such a relationship would make the IVRT more useful by itself and perhaps allow it to be combined more precisely with other noninvasive parameters of ventricular filling. The purpose of this study was to validate such a quantitative relationship. Assuming isovolumic relaxation to be a monoexponential decay of ventricular pressure (pv) to a zero-

Magnetophoretic Refinement and Microdroplet Confinement for Magnetic Relaxation Biosensing.

Magnetic relaxation biosensing (MRB) is inherently limited by relaxation noise arising from magnetic bead heterogeneity and diffusion-mediated averaging in bulk aqueous environments. Here, we present a microdroplet-confined magnetic relaxation biosensing (mc-MRB) strategy that enhances signal stability and measurement sensitivity by physically regulating both magnetic perturbers and their relaxation microenvironment. A refined magnetophoretic-inertial microfluidic module removes low-moment and aggregated beads, yielding a homogeneous immunomagnetic nanobead population. Subsequent confinement w

Nonlinear optical signatures of spin relaxation in 2D perovskites.

Spin-orbit coupling splits the exciton resonances of two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (2D-OIHPs) into an optically active fine structure. Although circularly polarized light can induce macroscopic spin polarizations in ensembles of quantum wells, the orientations of the angular momentum vectors associated with individual excitons generally randomize on sub-picosecond timescales in 2D-OIHPs with single lead-iodide layers. In the present work, we investigate the nonlinear optical signatures of spin depolarization in 2D-OIHP materials with various organic layer thicknesses and

Relaxation dynamics of aniline in methanol: the photoionization channel.

The relaxation of aniline after excitation at 267 and 200 nm (4.6 and 6.2 eV) in methanol solutions has been explored by fs time-resolved experiments and the observations interpreted using ab initio calculations on the excited states of aniline-methanol clusters. In contrast to what has been reported under aqueous solvation, excitation at 267 nm does not induce ionization of the molecule and only a photophysical relaxation route is operative. The computational results allow us to rationalize this observation in terms of the different nature that the Rydberg transition, responsible for the elec

Solvent Polarity Dependent Ultrafast Relaxation Kinetics of ADS800AT Dye.

This work investigated the photoexcitation and relaxation kinetics of the ADS800AT dye dissolved in different solvents using transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) with a white-light continuum probe. The dye was dissolved in various solvents, including dichloromethane (DCM), 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB), ethanol, and methanol, to study their impact on the dye's characteristics. The linear absorption peak varied from 835 to 809 nm, depending on the polarity of the solvent, and the pump wavelength for TAS was chosen accordingly. We observed ground-state bleaching and excited-state absorption after
