Understanding self-reported importance of religion/spirituality in a North American sample of individuals at risk for familial depression: A principal component analysis.

Several studies have shown protective effects between health outcomes and subjective reports of religious/spiritual (R/S) importance, as measured by a single self-report item. In a 3-generation study of individuals at high or low familial risk for depression, R/S importance was found to be protective against depression, as indicated by clinical and neurobiological outcomes. The psychological components underlying these protective effects, however, remain little understood. Hence, to clarify the meaning of answering the R/S importance item, we employed a comprehensive set of validated scales as

Partial substitution in the hidden curriculum of children's media: a comparative corpus analysis of religion-oriented and general-educational Turkish public broadcasting.

Research on social-emotional learning (SEL) has accumulated extensive evidence on programmatic outcomes but devoted less attention to the lexical-semantic shape of the educational input that children actually encounter. This study asks how religion-oriented and general-educational children's broadcasting operationalize SEL competencies at the level of vocabulary. Two Turkish public children's broadcasters, TRT Çocuk and TRT Diyanet Çocuk, were compared. The two share institutional auspices, regulatory oversight, target age range and broadcast format, yet differ systematically in curricular ori

The Role of Religion, Spirituality and Social Media in the Journey of Eating Disorders: A Qualitative Exploration of Participants in the "TastelifeUK" Eating Disorder Recovery Programme.

This study explores the religious and spiritual aspects of eating disorder recovery and the role of social media in the context of a third sector community-based recovery group in the UK. Four online focus groups explored participant perspectives (17 participants in total) using thematic analysis. The qualitative findings highlight that relational support from God is important in eating disorder recovery and coping, although this can be challenged by spiritual struggles and tensions. Relational support from people is also relevant where it offers a place to share different experiences together

"In God's Hands": Qualitative Study of Religion/Spirituality and HIV-Related Intersectional Stigma Among Black Women Living With HIV in Washington, DC.

Cisgender Black women living with HIV (BWLWH) face significant intersectional stigma, racism, and discrimination, contributing to lower adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Given the role of religion and spirituality in Black communities, we explored their influence on HIV treatment. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 BWLWH in Washington, DC ( M age = 52.7, SD = 15.95), living with HIV for an average of 26 years ( SD = 9.72); 33% were virally suppressed. Interviews averaged 52 min and revealed intersectional stigma from multiple sources that negatively affected ART adherence

God Bless You? The Association of Religion and Spirituality with Reduction of Suicide Ideation and Length of Hospital Stay among Psychiatric Patients at Risk for Suicide.

OBJECTIVE: Religion and spirituality (R&S) were protective against suicidal behavior in the majority of studies. In prospective studies, R&S were associated with improved outcome for patients with depression, a main risk factor for suicide. Thus, R&S may also improve recovery from suicidal crisis, but related data is lacking. METHOD: We explored how aspects of R&S were associated with reduction of suicide ideation and length of hospital stay among 351 patients admitted to a psychiatric crisis intervention ward specialized in suicide prevention. We analyzed the results separately by gender and

Religion in times of epidemics, a matter of public health: great plague of Marseille (FRA, 1720-1723) Covid-19 (2020-...), a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Humans have always referred to religion in History to explain disasters, and epidemics, especially when science could not explain them. Religion has often been invoked as a mean of protection. The Covid outbreak in 2020 and the initial medical impotence brought up old fears, reminiscent of the plague for some people. Unable to rely on science only, some turned back to religion. METHODOLOGY: A narrative review was conducted to compare the role of religion during the Great Plague of Marseille versus the early stages of Covid-19 pandemic. We mostly studied contemporary documents on t

Bone Grafts, Bone Substitutes and Regenerative Medicine Acceptance for the Management of Bone Defects Among French Population: Issues about Ethics, Religion or Fear?

Several techniques exist to manage bone defects in patients: bone grafts (autograft, allograft, xenograft), use of synthetic bone substitutes, or use of the products of bone regenerative medicine. Studies generally focus on their efficacy, but few focus on their acceptance. Our objectives were to assess their theoretical acceptance among the French general population, and to identify issues justifying refusals, by mean of an open e-questionnaire. The questionnaire was submitted to a general French population, and explained these techniques in an understandable way. Participants were asked to s

Why the Focus of Clerical Child Sexual Abuse has Largely Remained on the Catholic Church amongst Other Non-Catholic Christian Denominations and Religions.

The current study considers reasons for the consistent focus of academic research and mainstream media on clerical child sexual abuse (cCSA) largely within the Roman Catholic Church, seeming to ignore cCSA in other Christian denominations and religions. This study includes an analysis of traditional mainstream media and case reports on cCSA in non-Catholic churches and other religious faiths. The authors highlight the inadequacy of research and identify a wide range of gaps in this so far neglected area. Commonalities of cCSA and institutional responses are identified across denominations and

The Work of Faith Care: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis on the Role of Spirituality and Religion in Diabetes Self-Management Among Black Older Adults in the Greater Toronto Area.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to explore how faith and spirituality influence diabetes self-management among older Black adults with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: The researchers conducted in-depth interviews with 21 older Black adults (ages 55+) living with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes in the Greater Toronto Area. Guided by Van Manen's interpretive phenomenology and analyzed thematically using NVivo, the researchers examined lived experiences through 4 lifeworld themes: corporeality, spatiality, relationality, and temporality. RESULTS: Four themes emerged: faith as inner strength (spi

'At times, I feel like I'm sinning': the paradoxical role of non-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender-affirming religion in the lives of behaviourally-bisexual Latino men.

In this paper, we examine non-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender-affirming religiosity among behaviourally-bisexual Latino men as it relates to sexual attitudes, experiences and behaviours. We asked how does religiosity correspond to masculine identities, sex roles and condom efficacy? And how might religiosity influence contexts of health risks? Data were analysed from a mixed-methods study of 142 behaviourally-bisexual Latino men, aged 18-60 years. Major findings include positive correlations between religiosity and (1) masculine ideologies, (2) internalised homonegativity, (3) less comf

Examination of adolescent and youth modern contraceptive users' perceptions on how religion influences contraceptive use and their rationale and circumstances of use: qualitative evidence from Burkina Faso, Kenya and Niger.

While religion is a key determining factor of contraceptive use, few studies examine how religion influences adolescent and youth contraceptive attitudes, beliefs, and use. We use recently collected (August-November 2022) qualitative data from Burkina Faso, Kenya, and Niger among young users of modern contraception who practice Christianity or Islam. In-depth interviews with married and unmarried young women ages 18-24 years were conducted in two sites in each country to obtain a mix of religions and method users. In each country, many young Christian and Muslim women perceived that their reli

Religious themes in medical journals.

The dialogue between medicine and religion has been expected to intensify. To test the degree of interaction empirically, the contents of four clinical medical journals for the years 1981 to 1991 were examined for reference to religious themes. Religion was important in 13 of 17,345 articles. Reasons proposed for this relative neglect are hostility, lack of interest, inadequate empirical studies, and the substitution of ethics and humanities as surrogates for religion. Scholars of religion are encouraged to submit relevant material to medical journals.

Religious coping style as a predictor of the severity of anorectic symptomology.

A review of the literature concerning the relationship between anorexia nervosa (AN) and religion reveals two disparate themes: religion as a cultivator of AN, and religion as a recovery benefactor. The purpose of the present study was to address this discrepancy by exploring one factor--religious coping style--suspected to influence the role religion assumes in the lives of individuals with AN. A sample of 134 women who self-identified as having received an AN diagnosis completed measures of religious coping style and anorectic symptomology. Analyses revealed that religious coping style signi

The Place of Religiosity and Spirituality in Frankl's Logotherapy: Distinguishing Salvific and Hygienic Objectives.

The relationship between psychology and religion has been widely debated in the field of psychology from its foundation as an empirical science to the present day. One author who was interested in the relationship between psychology and religion, the place of the latter in human nature, and its role in psychotherapy was the Viennese neurologist, psychiatrist, and philosopher Viktor Emil Frankl (1905-1997), the founder of logotherapy. This paper presents Frankl's main ideas about religion, the religious nature of the human being, and the relationship between religiosity, psychotherapy, and logo

"The priest obviously doesn't know that I'm gay": the religious and spiritual journeys of Latino gay men.

In the United States, most adults state that religion plays an important role in their lives and claim a religious affiliation. For gay, bisexual, and transgender persons (GBT), the story is unique because their sexual and gender identity is not accepted by most religions. The purpose of this article is to analyze the role of religiosity in the life course of Latino GBTs raised as Catholics. Data come from 66 life history interviews with Latino GBTs living in Chicago and San Francisco, who grew up as Catholics. We found a religious trajectory that mirrored participants' developmental stages. D

How Does Religiosity Influence Gambling? A Cross-Cultural Study Between Portuguese and English Youth.

Research has shown that religion can play a protective role in diverse risky behaviors among young people. However, very little is known about the effect of religion in gambling, especially among young problem gamblers. A strong moral belief regarding gambling may prevent adolescents and young adults engaging in gambling and developing problems. Nevertheless, some evidence suggests that religion might have an influence on gambling cognitive distortions (i.e., some religious beliefs might influence the conceptions of chance and luck, which may contribute to an increase in gambling participation

Understanding Varieties of Religious Types: A Latent Profile Analysis of U.S. National Data.

OBJECTIVE: Religion and spirituality are multidimensional features of adult life, yet most research examines individual dimensions in isolation rather than as components of a greater whole. This study uses a person-centered approach to identify distinct profiles of religion and spirituality and to examine how these profiles differ across sociodemographic and psychological characteristics in a national sample of U.S. adults. METHODS: Data come from the Refresher sample of the Midlife in the U.S. (MIDUS) study. Latent profile analysis was used to identify patterns of religion and spirituality a
