Behaviourally-Informed Two-Way Text Messaging to Improve Return to HIV Care in South Africa: Evidence from a Randomised Controlled Trial.

One-way text messaging to re-engage people in HIV care has shown promise, but little is known about two-way messaging. We evaluated a behaviourally-informed two-way text messaging intervention to increase re-engagement in care following missed visits. We conducted an individual-level randomised controlled trial between February and March 2023 in Capricorn District, South Africa. Adults aged ≥ 18 years who had missed an ART visit by > 28 days were randomised to (1) a standard one-way text message, or (2) behaviourally-informed two-way text messages. The primary outcome was return to care within

Transdiagnostic compulsivity is associated with reduced reminder setting, only partially attributable to overconfidence.

In the current study, we explored the behavioural and cognitive correlates of the transdiagnostic trait 'compulsive behaviour and intrusive thought' (CIT) in humans. CIT is associated with impaired metacognition, which in turn has been associated with cognitive offloading behaviours such as external reminder setting that play a key role in fulfilling cognitive goals. In an online study (N=600), we investigated individual differences in compulsivity, metacognition, and external reminder usage. Compulsive individuals had reduced preference for external reminders. This was partially, but not full

Written reminders increase vaccine coverage in Danish children - evaluation of a nationwide intervention using The Danish Vaccination Register, 2014 to 2015.

We evaluated a national intervention of sending written reminders to parents of children lacking childhood vaccinations, using the Danish Vaccination Register (DDV). The intervention cohort included the full birth cohort of 124,189 children born in Denmark who reached the age of 2 and 6.5 years from 15 May 2014 to 14 May 2015. The reference cohort comprised 124,427 children who reached the age of 2 and 6.5 years from 15 May 2013 to 14 May 2014. Vaccination coverage was higher in the intervention cohort at 2.5 and 7 years of age. The differences were most pronounced for the second dose of the m

The effect of weekly text-message communication on treatment completion among patients with latent tuberculosis infection: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial (WelTel LTBI).

INTRODUCTION: Interventions to improve adherence to treatment for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) are necessary to improve treatment completion rates and optimise tuberculosis (TB) control efforts. The high prevalence of cell phone use presents opportunities to develop innovative ways to engage patients in care. A randomised controlled trial (RCT), WelTel Kenya1, demonstrated that weekly text messages improved antiretroviral adherence and clinical outcomes among patients initiating HIV treatment. The aim of this study is to determine whether the WelTel intervention can improve treatment c

Electronic patient messages to promote colorectal cancer screening: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality, yet effective screening tests are often underused. Electronic patient messages and personalized risk assessments delivered via an electronic personal health record could increase screening rates. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in 14 ambulatory health centers involving 1103 patients ranging in age from 50 to 75 years with an active electronic personal health record who were overdue for colorectal cancer screening. Patients were randomly assigned to receive a single electronic message highlighting overdue

The effect of computer reminders on GPs' prescribing behaviour: a cluster-randomised trial.

OBJECTIVE: It is difficult to control drug-prescribing behaviour in general practice, despite the development and distribution of guidelines. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect on drug-prescribing behaviour of implementing prescribing guidelines by means of a reactive computer reminder system (CRS). DESIGN: Cluster-randomised controlled trial with an incomplete block design in the south of the Netherlands: 25 GPs (7 GP practices) received reminders about antibiotics and asthma/COPD prescriptions, 28 GPs (7 GP practices) received reminders about cholesterol prescriptions. Implementation of a mailed faecal immunochemical test programme for colorectal cancer screening among Veterans.

BACKGROUND: Screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) with faecal immunochemical test (FIT) is effective at reducing CRC mortality. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with deferred care, especially screening for CRC. AIM: We sought to develop a mailed FIT programme (MFP) to increase CRC screening and make recommendations for adoption across the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and for other large healthcare systems. SETTING: 2 regional VA medical centres in California and Washington state. PARTICIPANTS: 5667 average risk veterans aged 50-75 overdue or due within 90 day

I need it. Without it, I wouldn't have gone, and I do want to go: patient perspectives on the acceptability and appropriateness of two patient-centered interventions to improve adherence to annual lung cancer screening.

INTRODUCTION: Low adherence to annual lung cancer screening (LCS) has tempered mortality benefits in clinical practice. Herein, we assessed the acceptability and appropriateness of two patient-centered interventions addressing adherence barriers to annual LCS. METHODS: Participants were Kaiser Permanente Washington members, aged 50-78 years, who participated in a pragmatic randomized trial ("The Larch Trial"). The trial tested: (1) health communication including a video to improve patient knowledge of timeliness to return; and (2) outreach reminders to patients to schedule annual screenings a

A novel opt-in vs opt-out approach to referral-based treatment of tobacco use in Veterans Affairs (VA) primary care clinics: A provider-level randomized controlled trial protocol.

To determine whether an opt-out approach is effective for referral to treatment for tobacco use, we designed a clinical reminder for nurses in a primary care setting that provides a referral for patients who smoke cigarettes. We will use a two-arm, cluster-randomized design to assign nurses at the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System to test which mode of referral (opt-in vs opt-out) is more effective. All patients will be referred to evidence-based treatment for tobacco cessation including counseling from the New York State Quitline, and VetsQuit, a text messaging-based system for tobacco ces

A Last-Ditch Effort and Personalized Surgeon Letter Improves PROMs Follow-Up Rate in Sports Medicine Patients: A Crossover Randomized Controlled Trial.

Patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) are important for the advancement of orthopaedic surgeries. The primary difficulty while collecting PROMs is obtaining adequate follow-up rates. Therefore, it is important to find methods to improve follow-up, especially in patients who have failed to respond to initial attempts. We hypothesized that PROMs follow-up could be effectively increased by sending a salvage-effort personalized surgeon letter to sports medicine patients who failed to respond to initial (centralized electronic, mail, and/or phone contacts) PROMs collection 1 year after surgery

Feasibility and Acceptability of a REDCap-Embedded HIPAA-Compliant Text Messaging Application to Track Medication Adherence in Adolescents With Lupus.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Despite advances in clinical care and treatment options, adolescents with lupus continue to experience adverse health outcomes. Poor adherence to medication regimens is a major contributor to these negative outcomes. The utility of short message service (SMS) in tracking barriers to adherence prospectively remains untested for adolescents with lupus. Our objectives were (1) feasibility of incorporating a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant SMS text messaging application into REDCap and (2) acceptability of using SMS text messaging to trac
