Modeling activation and effective connectivity of VWFA in same script bilinguals.

Previous neuroimaging research revealed a small area in the inferior occipito-temporal cortex (VWFA), which seems to be involved in recognition of written words. The specialized response of the VWFA to words could result from repeated exposure to print in the course of functional fine-tuning of the brain. Research with bilingual speakers holds promise in helping to reveal response properties of the VWFA by assessing its sensitivity to language proficiency, word-form similarity, and meaning overlap across two languages. Using fMRI, we compared VWFA activity for cognate and homograph prime-targe

Cognitive Processes in Response to Goal Failure: A Study of Ruminative Thought and its Affective Consequences.

Failure to make progress toward personal goals can lead to negative affective states, such as depression and anxiety. Past research suggests that rumination in response to goal failure may prolong and intensify those acute emotional responses, but that process remains unclear. We examined ruminative thought processes following experimentally manipulated exposure to past failures to attain advancement (promotion) goals and safety (prevention) goals. We predicted that priming of past promotion and prevention goal failures would lead individuals to think repetitively about these failures and that

Role of serotonin neurons in the induction of levodopa- and graft-induced dyskinesias in Parkinson's disease.

Recent studies in animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD) have provided evidence that dopamine released from spared serotonin afferents can act as a trigger of dyskinetic movements induced by repetitive, low doses of levodopa. Serotonin neurons have the capacity to store and release dopamine synthesized from systemically administered levodopa. However, because of the lack of any autoregulatory feedback control, dopamine released from serotonin terminals results in excessive swings in extracellular dopamine levels after peripheral administration of levodopa. Such "dysregulated" release of lev

Modern menstruation: Is it abnormal and unhealthy?

The menstrual cycle appears to have evolved in humans and some other species to improve reproductive efficiency by enabling progesterone production without the presence of the fetus. This phenomenon is termed spontaneous decidualization. Repeated menstruation is produced in modern women because of better general health and having fewer pregnancies later in life and limiting breast feeding. The repeated breakdown of a progesterone primed endometrium releases an inflammatory cascade which appears to have short and long term adverse consequences. Repetitive modern menstruation is no longer a sign

Cocontraction in the elbow and shoulder muscles during rapid cyclic movements in an aquatic environment.

The purpose of this study was to document the cocontraction patterns of the combined wrist-elbow-shoulder joint muscles during maximal-effort swimming. The subjects, nine high-performance athletes, swam 4 x 100 m at maximal effort with a 45 s rest after each 100 m run. Electromyographic (EMG) recording of six muscles was performed with surface electrodes and telemetry. The quality of the arm movement was verified with two video cameras and the movement was divided into four phases: the initial press, the inward scull, the outward scull and the air recovery. Eccentric work and antagonist co-act

Mitochondria regulate the Ca(2+)-exocytosis relationship of bovine adrenal chromaffin cells.

The present study expands the contemporary view of mitochondria as important participants in cellular Ca(2+) dynamics and provides evidence that mitochondria regulate the supply of release-competent secretory granules. Using pharmacological probes to inhibit mitochondrial Ca(2+) import, the ability of mitochondria to modulate secretory activity in single, patch-clamped bovine chromaffin cells was examined by simultaneously monitoring rapid changes in membrane surface area (DeltaC(m)) and cytosolic Ca(2+) levels ([Ca(2+)](c)). Repetitive step depolarizations or action potential waveforms were f

NADPH oxidase is required for the sensory plasticity of the carotid body by chronic intermittent hypoxia.

Respiratory motoneuron response to hypoxia is reflex in nature and carotid body sensory receptor constitutes the afferent limb of this reflex. Recent studies showed that repetitive exposures to hypoxia evokes long term facilitation of sensory nerve discharge (sLTF) of the carotid body in rodents exposed to chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH). Although studies with anti-oxidants suggested the involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated signaling in eliciting sLTF, the source of and the mechanisms associated with ROS generation have not yet been investigated. We tested the hypothesis th

Effects of Loaded Plyometric Exercise on Post-Activation Performance Enhancement of Countermovement Jump in Sedentary Men.

Purpose: Explosive performance is increased right after performing loaded resistance exercise, which is known as post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE). Method: We investigated the effects of a plyometric exercise (PLYO) consisting of five sets of six drop-jumps from a 52-cm platform with a load corresponding to 20% body mass on changes in countermovement jump (CMJ) height in sedentary young men. Eleven young nonresistance trained men (19.6 ± 1.8 y, 69 ± 9 kg, 1.76 ± 0.08 m) who showed more than 4% increase in CMJ height at 4 min after five back squats with five-repetition maximum load

Priming iTBS for lower limb rehabilitation after stroke: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial on efficacy and neuroplasticity.

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is widely applied in treating motor dysfunction after stroke. Building on metaplasticity principle, continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) preconditioning enhances subsequent excitatory effects of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS). This phenomenon is well-established for upper limbs in healthy populations, yet its application to the lower limbs remains underexplored, especially in stroke survivors. Guided by "central-peripheral-central" theory, this protocol investigates the synergistic effects of cTBS-preconditione

Potential role of primed microglia during obesity on the mesocorticolimbic circuit in autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disease which involves functional and structural defects in selective central nervous system (CNS) regions that harm function and individual ability to process and respond to external stimuli. Individuals with ASD spend less time engaging in social interaction compared to non-affected subjects. Studies employing structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging reported morphological and functional abnormalities in the connectivity of the mesocorticolimbic reward pathway between the nucleus accumbens and the ventral tegmental ar

Choice reaching with a LEGO arm robot (CoRLEGO): The motor system guides visual attention to movement-relevant information.

We present an extension of a neurobiologically inspired robotics model, termed CoRLEGO (Choice reaching with a LEGO arm robot). CoRLEGO models experimental evidence from choice reaching tasks (CRT). In a CRT participants are asked to rapidly reach and touch an item presented on the screen. These experiments show that non-target items can divert the reaching movement away from the ideal trajectory to the target item. This is seen as evidence attentional selection of reaching targets can leak into the motor system. Using competitive target selection and topological representations of motor param

Using neuroimaging to individualize TMS treatment for depression: Toward a new paradigm for imaging-guided intervention.

The standard clinical technique for using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with limited efficacy to date. Such limited efficacy may be due to reliance on scalp-based targeting rather than state-of-the-science methods which incorporate fMRI-guided neuronavigation based on a specific model of neurocircuit dysfunction. In this review, we examine such a specific model drawn from regulatory focus theory, which postulates two brain/behavior systems, the promotion and prevention systems, underlying goal pursuit. Neural representation of the sensorimotor speech-action-repository.

A speech-action-repository (SAR) or "mental syllabary" has been proposed as a central module for sensorimotor processing of syllables. In this approach, syllables occurring frequently within language are assumed to be stored as holistic sensorimotor patterns, while non-frequent syllables need to be assembled from sub-syllabic units. Thus, frequent syllables are processed efficiently and quickly during production or perception by a direct activation of their sensorimotor patterns. Whereas several behavioral psycholinguistic studies provided evidence in support of the existence of a syllabary, f

Constriction of the mitochondrial inner compartment is a priming event for mitochondrial division.

Mitochondrial division is critical for the maintenance and regulation of mitochondrial function, quality and distribution. This process is controlled by cytosolic actin-based constriction machinery and dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) on mitochondrial outer membrane (OMM). Although mitochondrial physiology, including oxidative phosphorylation, is also important for efficient mitochondrial division, morphological alterations of the mitochondrial inner-membrane (IMM) have not been clearly elucidated. Here we report spontaneous and repetitive constriction of mitochondrial inner compartment (CoMIC

Repetitive electric stimulation elicits enduring improvement of sensorimotor performance in seniors.

Age-related changes occur on all stages of the human somatosensory pathway, thereby deteriorating tactile, haptic, and sensorimotor performance. However, recent studies show that age-related changes are not irreversible but treatable through peripheral stimulation paradigms based on neuroplasticity mechanisms. We here applied repetitive electric stimulation (rES) to the fingers on a bi-weekly basis for 4 weeks to induce enduring amelioration of age-related changes in healthy individuals aged 60-85 years. Tactile, haptic, and motor performance gradually improved over time of intervention. After

The Role of Epigenetic Change in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by problems with social communication, social interaction, and repetitive or restricted behaviors. ASD are comorbid with other disorders including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, epilepsy, Rett syndrome, and Fragile X syndrome. Neither the genetic nor the environmental components have been characterized well enough to aid diagnosis or treatment of non-syndromic ASD. However, genome-wide association studies have amassed evidence suggesting involvement of hundreds of genes and a vari

Behavioural hyperventilation as a novel clinical condition associated with central sleep apnoea: a report of three cases.

Central sleep apnoea (CSA) is a disorder characterised by repetitive episodes of decreased ventilation due to complete or partial reduction in the central neural outflow to the respiratory muscles. Hyperventilation plays a prime role in the pathogenesis of CSA. Chronic heart failure and dwelling at high altitude are classical conditions in which CSA is induced by hyperventilation. Hyperventilation syndrome (HVS) is a prevalent behavioural condition in which minute ventilation exceeds metabolic demands, resulting in haemodynamic and chemical changes that produce characteristic dysphoric symptom

Physical localization of the retrotransposons Boudicca and Perere 03 in Schistosoma mansoni.

Schistosoma mansoni is 1 of the causative agents of schistosomiasis, an endemic disease in 76 countries of the world. The study of its genome, estimated to be 270 Mb, is very important to understanding schistosome biology, the mechanisms of drug resistance, and immune evasion. Repetitive elements constitute more than 40% of the S. mansoni genome and may play a role in the parasite evolution. The retrotransposons Boudicca, a long terminal repeat (LTR), and Perere 03, a non-LTR, are present in a high number in the S. mansoni genome and were localized with the use of fluorescence in situ hybridiz
