A tale of two tracts: history, current advances, and future directions of research on sexual differentiation of reproductive tracts†.

Alfred Jost's work in the 1940s laid the foundation of the current paradigm of sexual differentiation of reproductive tracts, which contends that testicular hormones drive the male patterning of reproductive tract system whereas the female phenotype arises by default. Once established, the sex-specific reproductive tracts undergo morphogenesis, giving rise to anatomically and functionally distinct tubular organs along the rostral-caudal axis. Impairment of sexual differentiation of reproductive tracts by genetic alteration and environmental exposure are the main causes of disorders of sex deve

Coronary microvascular dysfunction is not associated with a history of reproductive risk factors in women with angina pectoris-An iPOWER substudy.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive risk factors such as preeclampsia and recurrent miscarriages have been associated with adverse cardiovascular (CV) events. Underlying coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) may be a common denominator. PURPOSE: We investigated whether a history of reproductive risk factors was associated with CMD in women with angina pectoris and no obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: Participants from the iPOWER study, including women with angina pectoris and no obstructive CAD (<50% stenosis), were invited to complete an electronic survey regarding reproductive ri

Association of reproductive history with hypertension and prehypertension in Chinese postmenopausal women: a population-based cross-sectional study.

Hypertension and prehypertension may have important roles in the etiology of cardiovascular disease. However, the risk factors of hypertension and prehypertension have not been thoroughly elucidated to date. This study intended to explore the relative effects between reproductive history and the prevalence of hypertension and prehypertension. A population-based cross-sectional survey of postmenopausal women (n=6252), aged 41-93 years, was conducted from August 2013 to August 2015. All subjects, selected by the multistage random sampling method in Henan province, were categorized as normotensio

Reproductive and family planning history, knowledge, and needs: a community survey of low-income women in Beijing, China.

BACKGROUND: The reproductive health status of China's low-income urban women is believed to be poor. Therefore, understanding their reproductive history and needs and improving services provision is very important. However, few studies have been done to assess reproductive health status, knowledge and needs in this low-income population. The purpose of this study is to broadly assess reproductive and family planning history, knowledge and health needs among low income urban women with an aim to informing health services interventions. METHODS: 1642 low-income women age 18-49 from Haidian dist

Reproductive factors and family history of breast cancer in relation to plasma prolactin levels in premenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Many reproductive factors are associated with breast cancer risk, potentially through a hormonal pathway. The peptide hormone prolactin is essential in mammary development and lactation and may be a link between risk factors and breast cancer. While higher prolactin levels are associated with increased breast cancer risk, few determinants of prolactin levels are known. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis among 1,089 premenopausal and 1,311 postmenopausal women within the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and the NHS II to examine the associations of reproductive factors, benign breast disease and

Reproductive history and health screening for women and mortality in the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study for Evaluation of Cancer (JACC).

Reproductive history and participation in health screening for women were surveyed among female subjects, and interesting results were obtained in the present analyses. Women who had never experienced pregnancy had significantly increased risks of death from all causes and cerebrovascular disorders compared with those who had experienced 1 or 2 pregnancies. In contrast, women who had experienced 3 or 4 pregnancies had significantly decreased risks of death from all causes, all cancers, rectal cancer, and breast cancer. Among women who had ever undergone mass screening examination for uterine c

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus by birth order: A descriptive study across lifetime reproductive history.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus are known to be strongly related, and underlying maternal cardiometabolic dysfunction has been proposed as a mechanism for both complications. A comparison of the trends by birth order for the two complications may reveal insights into their shared or different causes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway from 1999 to 2020 with an aim to compare risk by birth order for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus. Visualizations of cross-sectiona

The association between reproductive history and abdominal adipose tissue among postmenopausal women: results from the Women's Health Initiative.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the association between reproductive health history (e.g. age at menarche, menopause, reproductive lifespan) with abdominal adiposity in postmenopausal women? SUMMARY ANSWER: Higher visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) tissue levels were observed among women with earlier menarche, earlier menopause, and greater parity. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Postmenopausal women are predisposed to accumulation of VAT and SAT. Reproductive health variables are known predictors of overall obesity status in women, defined by BMI. Sexual History-Taking in a Surgery Clerkship Assessment: A Stubborn Clinical Skills Gap With Reproductive Health Care Implications.

PURPOSE: Patients present with sexual and reproductive health needs in various clinical settings, so knowing when and how to elicit a relevant sexual history is critical in any specialty. This work examined whether reinforcing the surgical relevance of sexual health with an integrated training improved third-year medical students' sexual history-taking. METHOD: Third-year surgery clerkship standardized patient assessments were video coded from a 2021-2022 comparison and 2022-2023 intervention cohort (University of Louisville School of Medicine). The case used for both cohorts involved a 38-ye

Real-world, single-centre prospective data of age at breast cancer onset: focus on survival and reproductive history.

OBJECTIVES: Being either young or old at the time of breast cancer diagnosis has been suggested as an indicator of a poor prognosis. We studied the effect of age at breast cancer onset in relation to survival, focusing in particular on biological subtypes and reproductive anamnesis. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Patients with early breast cancer (n=594) treated in a Finnish University Hospital during 2003-2013 were prospectively collected and followed in median 102 months. RESULTS: Patients with luminal A-like breast cancer were older than the patients with luminal B-like (HER2-positive)

Effects of donor age and reproductive history on developmental potential of ovum pickup oocytes in Japanese Black cattle (Wagyu).

The objectives of this study were to analyze the (1) effects of donor age and multiparity on development of in vitro fertilization (IVF) embryos after ovum pickup (OPU), (2) effects of repeated and consecutive OPU-IVF procedures on embryo development, and (3) embryo production from OPU-IVF in donors with differing embryo yields after multiple ovulation and embryo transfer technology (MOET) in Japanese Black cattle (Wagyu). Donors were pre-treated with low-dosage follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH; 200 IU total), and oocytes were collected via OPU and fertilized by IVF to generate blastocysts. T

Association of physical activity, body mass index and reproductive history with breast cancer by menopausal status in Iranian women.

BACKGROUND: The incidence rate of breast cancer (BC) is increasing in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Iran. We investigated the association between BC risk and physical activity (PA), body mass index (BMI), and reproductive history among Iranian women. METHODS: We conducted a large hospital-based case-control study and compared 958 BC cases with 967 controls at the Cancer Institute of Iran during 2011-2016. We used multiple logistic regression models and adjusted for potential confounders to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) for the associati

Reproductive history, breast-feeding and risk of triple negative breast cancer: The Breast Cancer Etiology in Minorities (BEM) study.

Few risk factors have been identified for triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) which lacks expression of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). This more aggressive subtype disproportionately affects some racial/ethnic minorities and is associated with lower survival. We pooled data from three population-based studies (558 TNBC and 5,111 controls) and examined associations of TNBC risk with reproductive history and breast-feeding. We estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using multivariable logistic regre

Evaluating the relationships among maternal reproductive history, birth characteristics, and infant leukemia: a report from the Children's Cancer Group.

PURPOSE: Specific events in the mother's reproductive history and certain birth characteristics have been associated with childhood leukemia. Few studies have explored these associations specifically in infants. METHODS: The Children's Cancer Group (CCG) conducted three separate case-control studies of childhood leukemia that involved similar methodologies and data collection. Data from interviews of the mothers of a total of 303 children diagnosed with leukemia at 1 year of age or younger and their matched controls (n = 468) were available from the three studies. These data included maternal
