Snakes and Souks: Zoonotic pathogens associated to reptiles in the Marrakech markets, Morocco.

The world-famous markets of Marrakech, also known in Arabic as souks, harbor a vast diversity of reptiles that are sold for medicinal/magic/pet purposes or used for snake charming. This unique epidemiological context has never been studied considering the interactions of humans, reptiles, and zoonotic pathogens. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify the parasites and pathogens present in blood and feces associated with handled reptiles in the markets of Marrakech to assess the risk of zoonotic transmission within the reptile-human interface. Privately owned reptiles (n = 118), coming fro

Evolution of eggshell structure in relation to nesting ecology in non-avian reptiles.

Amniotic eggs are multifunctional structures that enabled early tetrapods to colonize the land millions of years ago, and are now the reproductive mode of over 70% of all terrestrial amniotes. Eggshell morphology is at the core of animal survival, mediating the interactions between embryos and their environment, and has evolved into a massive diversity of forms and functions in modern reptiles. These functions are critical to embryonic survival and may serve as models for new antimicrobial and/or breathable membranes. However, we still lack critical data on the basic structural and functional

Tapeworms (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) of Australian reptiles: hidden diversity of strictly host-specific parasites.

Reptilian fauna of Australia is extraordinarily rich and diverse, but very little is known about parasites of reptiles, including proteocephalid cestodes of the genus Ophiotaenia La Rue, 1911. In the present survey, data on these parasites are summarised for the first time based on detailed evaluation of all available type and voucher specimens. This survey includes five named species, with four species redescribed, namely O. amphiboluri (Nybelin, 1917), O. longmani Johnston, 1916, O. mjobergi (Nybelin, 1917), and O. striata (Johnston, 1914), and 9 putative new species which are not formally d

Pulmonary fungal granulomas and fibrinous pneumonia caused by different hypocrealean fungi in reptiles.

In contrast to fungal dermatitis, fungal glossitis and disseminated visceral mycosis, fungal infection of the lung has so far rarely been described in reptiles. Pulmonary fungal granulomas were diagnosed histopathologically within the scope of post mortem examinations. Fragments of the 18S-internal transcribed spacer1-5.8S rDNA (SSU-ITS1-5.8S) and 28S rDNA (LSU), including domains (D)1 and D2 as well as the protein coding gene translation elongation factor 1 alpha (TEF) were used for phylogenetical analysis after isolation of the fungal pathogen by culturing. Is naïveté forever? Alien predator and aggressor recognition by two endemic island reptiles.

The disproportionate impacts of invasive predators are often attributed to the naïveté (i.e., inefficient or non-existing anti-predator behavior) of island native species having evolved without such predators. Naïveté has long been regarded as a fixed characteristic, but a few recent studies indicate a capacity for behavioral adaptation in native species in contact with alien predators. Here, we tested whether two reptiles endemic to New Caledonia, a skink, Caledoniscincus austrocaledonicus, and a gecko, Bavayia septuiclavis, recognized and responded to the odor of six introduced species (two

Serosurveillance of eastern equine encephalitis virus in amphibians and reptiles from Alabama, USA.

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) is among the most medically important arboviruses in North America, and studies suggest a role for amphibians and reptiles in its transmission cycle. Serum samples collected from 351 amphibians and reptiles (27 species) from Alabama, USA, were tested for the presence of antibodies against EEEV. Frogs, turtles, and lizards showed little or no seropositivity, and snakes had high seropositivity rates. Most seropositive species were preferred or abundant hosts of Culex spp. mosquitoes at Tuskegee National Forest, that target ectothermic hosts. The cottonmou

Reptile trade and chelonians-associated Salmonellosis in humans: A public health concern.

Animal trade has become a serious criminal practice in the world. Every day thousands of exotic wild animals, including reptiles, are farmed and sold worldwide. The illegal collection of turtles and tortoises remains completely unsupervised and represents a big challenge for responsible authorities. This has consequences for animals and public health because it can contribute to the spread of multiple zoonotic pathogens by introducing exotic species into new geographical areas like wet markets, pet shops, and houses. Non-typhoidal Salmonella are bacteria that can commonly cause self-limiting g

Modeling of the respiratory system of the long-necked Triassic reptile Tanystropheus (Archosauromorpha).

All known species of the Triassic archosauromorph genus Tanystropheus are known to have had the longest neck in proportion to their torso. This feature is related to a series of ventilatory challenges since an increase in neck length also increases airway length and, therefore, the volume of stagnant air that does not reach the lungs, the dead space volume. Based on this challenge, the objective of the present study was to model the type of respiratory system of Tanystropheus able to meet its metabolic demands during the early Triassic period. The modeling was based on allometric relations for

Common goals, different stages: the state of the ARTs for reptile and amphibian conservation.

Amphibians and reptiles are highly threatened vertebrate taxa with large numbers of species threatened with extinction. With so many species at risk, conservation requires the efficient and cost-effective application of all the tools available so that as many species as possible are assisted. Biobanking of genetic material in genetic resource banks (GRBs) in combination with assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) to retrieve live animals from stored materials are two powerful, complementary tools in the conservation toolbox for arresting and reversing biodiversity decline for both amphibian

Acute temperature adaptation mechanisms in the native reptile species Eremias argus.

Reptiles are sensitive to temperature changes as ectotherm animals. The climate warming may pose more serious threat to reptiles. Although the behavior effect and reproduction biology have been well studied, little information is available about the adaptation mechanisms of reptiles to temperature stress. In this study, the native Chinese species, Eremias argus were incubated at 15 (cold stress), 25 (control group) and 35 °C (thermal stress) for 24 h. The transcriptome and metabolome technology were applied to investigate the molecular regulation mechanisms of lizards to acute temperature chan

Vocalization by extant nonavian reptiles: A synthetic overview of phonation and the vocal apparatus.

Among amniote vertebrates, nonavian reptiles (chelonians, crocodilians, and lepidosaurs) are regarded as using vocal signals rarely (compared to birds and mammals). In all three reptilian clades, however, certain taxa emit distress calls and advertisement calls using modifications of regions of the upper respiratory tract. There is no central tendency in either acoustic mechanisms or the structure of the vocal apparatus, and many taxa that vocalize emit only relatively simple sounds. Available evidence indicates multiple origins of true vocal abilities within these lineages. Reptiles thus prov

Individual and age-related variation of cellular brain composition in a squamate reptile.

Within-species variation in the number of neurons, other brain cells and their allocation to different brain parts is poorly studied. Here, we assess these numbers in a squamate reptile, the Madagascar ground gecko (Paroedura picta). We examined adults from two captive populations and three age groups within one population. Even though reptiles exhibit extensive adult neurogenesis, intrapopulation variation in the number of neurons is similar to that in mice. However, the two populations differed significantly in most measures, highlighting the fact that using only one population can underesti

Contrasting Patterns of Evolutionary Diversification in the Olfactory Repertoires of Reptile and Bird Genomes.

Olfactory receptors (ORs) are membrane proteins that mediate the detection of odorants in the environment, and are the largest vertebrate gene family. Comparative studies of mammalian genomes indicate that OR repertoires vary widely, even between closely related lineages, as a consequence of frequent OR gains and losses. Several studies also suggest that mammalian OR repertoires are influenced by life history traits. Sauropsida is a diverse group of vertebrates group that is the sister group to mammals, and includes birds, testudines, squamates, and crocodilians, and represents a natural syste

Occurrence and molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium spp. in mammals and reptiles at the Lisbon Zoo.

The presence of Cryptosporidium parasites in mammals and reptiles kept at the Lisbon Zoo was investigated. A total of 274 stool samples were collected from 100 mammals and 29 reptiles. The species and genotype of the isolates identified by light microscopy were determined by nested PCR and sequence analysis of a fragment of the small subunit rRNA gene. Cryptosporidium oocysts were found in one black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou), one Prairie bison (Bison bison bison) and in one Indian star tortoise (Geochelone elegans). The PCR and sequence analysis of these three isolates showed that those e

Calcium binding protein immunoreactivity in nucleus rotundus in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus.

Nucleus rotundus is a prominent nucleus in the dorsal thalamus of nonmammalian amniotes. In one group of reptiles, Caiman crocodilus, previous studies have identified three parts of this neuronal aggregate. The central portion, the rotundal core, which receives visual input from the midbrain and projects to a restricted portion of the telencephalon, contains relay cells only. Previous examinations using Nissl morphology indicated that neurons of the rotundal core were not a homogeneous population of cells. The present investigation utilized another methodology to examine cell populations withi

Breathing and upper airway CO2 in reptiles: role of the nasal and vomeronasal systems.

The ventilatory response of the garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis, to 2% CO2 delivered to the upper airways (UA) was measured before and after the olfactory or vomeronasal nerves were transected. The UA (nasal cavities and mouth) were isolated from the gas source inspired into the lungs by inserting an endotracheal T tube into the glottis. CO2 was administered to the UA via a head chamber. The primary ventilatory response to UA CO2 was a significant decrease in ventilatory frequency (f) and minute ventilation. The decrease in f was caused by a significant increase in the pause duration. Tidal
