Forming Genuine Bonds: HIV Research Retention Strategies for Cisgender Women Vulnerable to HIV Acquisition.

Cisgender women face significant HIV risks in the United States yet retention in prevention research is challenging. The same factors that increase HIV vulnerability also create barriers to research participation. This qualitative study explored multilevel barriers and facilitators to retaining cisgender women with increased HIV prevention needs in research using the social ecological model (SEM). Semi-structured interviews were conducted from August 2023 to February 2024 with 114 participants across three groups: HIV-negative cisgender women with increased HIV prevention needs (n = 34), cisge

"There's not enough studies": Views of black breast and ovarian cancer patients on research participation.

BACKGROUND: Black breast and ovarian cancer patients are underrepresented in clinical cancer trials disproportionate to the prevalence of these cancers in Black females. Historically, lower enrollment has been attributed to individualized factors, including medical mistrust, but more recently structural factors, including systemic racism, have received additional scrutiny. We interviewed Black women with a personal or family history of breast and ovarian cancer to understand their views and experiences related to research participation. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted via telep

Misaligned Expectations: Motivations of Medically Underserved People to Enroll in the All of Us Research Program.

It is important to know what motivates people, especially from groups underrepresented in biomedical research, to accept or decline participation in research studies. With this information, engagement strategies, incentives to participate, and benefits of participation can be aligned with what potential research participants value and expect from participating in research. Our project sought to identify what motivated people recruited at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) to enroll, or not, in the All of Us Research Program (AoU). Qualitative interviews revealed that the most common mo

Dating and Sexual Violence Research in the Schools: Balancing Protection of Confidentiality with Supporting the Welfare of Survivors.

Rigorous research and program evaluation are needed to understand the experience of dating and sexual violence among youth and the impact of prevention and intervention efforts. Our dilemma in doing this work occurred when youth disclosed dating and sexual violence on a research survey. What responsibility do researchers have to protect survivors' confidentiality as a research participant versus taking steps to ensure the student has the opportunity to access help? In our evaluation of a pilot dating violence prevention program, our protocols employed widely used procedures for providing resou

[Defining an ethics for preventive trials].

Preventive trials (to prevent from infection) or prophylaxis trials (to avoid consequences of the disease) differ from other clinical trials as they apply to healthy subjects or subjects considering themselves as such: the latter do not ask for intervention even less for trial. Moreover, it is generally an experiment which aims at validating a public health intervention, the individual character of which could appear as secondary regarding the collective interest. It concerns many tools or methods: preventive or prophylactic vaccines and drugs, condoms, impregnated bed nets, etc. The field of

Community Perspectives on Ethical Considerations in Clinical Research: Lessons from the ESRIFAL Clinical Trial in the Meme River Basin, Cameroon.

The study explored community perspectives on ethical considerations in clinical research, focusing on the ESRIFAL trial conducted in Cameroon. The hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used to analyze and interpret the data. Participants were selected by systematic sampling. In-depth interviews were used to gather data from the participants. Some findings revealed that while ethical principles such as informed consent are highly recommended in clinical trials, participants did not understand and interpret these documents with as much importance as expected. Participants had other prioritie

Debriefing as a form of reflection and catharsis for researchers.

Background The collection of sensitive data can arouse emotional reactions and researchers may have difficulty distancing themselves from personal stories. Debriefing can address the emotional effect of an experience on researchers. Aim To explore the debrief responses of three research assistants who were involved in the review of retrospective charts and medical notes in a study that examined the risk factors for readmission in young people with anorexia nervosa. Discussion Based on a review of the responses, the principal research team reflected on the value and effectiveness of a debrief t

Variability in expiratory trajectory angles during consonant production by one human subject and from a physical mouth model: Application to respiratory droplet emission.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to improve understanding of droplet transport during expiratory emissions. While historical emphasis has been placed on violent events such as coughing and sneezing, the recognition of asymptomatic and presymptomatic spread has identified the need to consider other modalities, such as speaking. Accurate prediction of infection risk produced by speaking requires knowledge of both the droplet size distributions that are produced, as well as the expiratory flow fields that transport the droplets into the surroundings. This work demonstrates that the

Whether to Waive Parental Permission in HIV Prevention Research Among Adolescents: Ethical and Legal Considerations.

Critical ethical questions arise concerning whether studies among adolescents of new behavioral and biomedical HIV preventive interventions such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) should obtain parental permission. This paper examines the relevant regulations and ethical guidance concerning waivers of parental permission, and arguments for and against such waivers. Opponents of such waivers may argue that adolescent decision-making is "too immature" and that parents always have rights to decide how to protect their children. Yet requiring parental permission may put adolescents at risk, and/or

Challenges arising when seeking broad consent for health research data sharing: a qualitative study of perspectives in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Research funders, regulatory agencies, and journals are increasingly expecting that individual-level data from health research will be shared. Broad consent to such sharing is considered appropriate, feasible and acceptable in low- and middle-income settings, but to date limited empirical research has been conducted to inform the design of such processes. We examined stakeholder perspectives about how best to seek broad consent to sharing data from the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit, which implemented a data sharing policy and broad consent to data sharing in Januar

Health research and safeguards: The South African journey.

Health research, as a social good, needs to be conducted in the interests of the common good. Because of the unfortunate exploitation of research participants globally, safeguards for protections are necessary. Most international codes and guidelines originated as responses to the abuse and mistreatment of research subjects. By the 1890s, antivivisectionists were already calling for laws to protect children, as a result of the increasing numbers of institutionalised children being subjected to vaccine experiments in Europe and the USA. Just after the turn of the century, the first attempt to t

Study partner types and prediction of cognitive performance: implications to preclinical Alzheimer's trials.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials require enrollment of a participant and a study partner, whose role includes assessing participant cognitive and functional performance. AD trials now investigate early stages of the disease, when participants are not cognitively impaired. This gives rise to the question of whether study partners or participants provide more information in these trials. METHODS: We used data from the AD Cooperative Study Prevention Instrument Project (ADCS-PI) to compare participant and study partner predictions of the participant's current and future cogni

Facilitators of and barriers to participation in Long COVID research: A qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Meeting recruitment targets in an expeditious manner is essential to the successful completion of any research project. However, despite the high prevalence and debilitating nature of Long COVID (LC), recruitment of participants into some LC studies has been challenging. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to a) identify factors influencing participation in LC research among individuals who were infected by SARS-CoV-2 but had declined participation in a LC study and b) to compare these factors to those previously recognized. METHODS: Using a semi-structured guide, we interviewed thirteen people
