Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a major global health concern, affecting maternal and child health. Although genetic predispositions and individual medical histories are well-recognized risk factors, emerging research suggests a significant impact of external factors like neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics. This study systematically reviews and meta-analyzes the association between neighborhood deprivation and GDM incidence. We searched multiple databases up to January 10, 2024, for studies linking neighborhood deprivation with GDM. Eligible studies were selected based on predef

PURPOSE: Shorter breast cancer (BC) survival outcomes persist by neighborhood disadvantage independent of patient, tumor, and treatment characteristics. This suggests unaccounted mechanisms by which neighborhood disadvantage "gets under the skin" to impact BC survival outcomes. Here, we evaluate the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage and clinical and neuroendocrine markers of stress in BC patients.
METHODS: Women with stage 0-III BC were enrolled 2-10 weeks post-surgery and before initiating adjuvant treatment in a study examining stress and stress management processes. Women prov

"This article reports on three Household Scenarios for the countries of the European Union.... These scenarios predict the numbers of persons living alone, living with a partner, living as a child at the parental home and living in another household position, as well as the institutional population. The period covered is 1995-2025. In all three scenarios, the number of persons living alone will grow.... The total number of households increases in all scenarios, whereas the average household size will decline in all scenarios."

We used Longitudinal Study of Aging data to investigate change between 1984 and 1986 in living arrangements of older nonmarried parents, focusing on transitions from living alone and living with children to living alone, with children, with others, and institutionalization. Predictors reflect opportunities for coresidence (number and gender of children), resources, needs, and (indirect measures of) attitudes. We find that those with more children are more likely to change from living alone to living with a child. However, number of children does not affect the odds of moving from living with a

OBJECTIVE: Zoning codes influence the built environments of communities in the United States (U.S.), which in turn have potential to promote social connections. This study assessed associations between code reform zoning (CRZ) and activity-oriented zoning (AOZ) exposure and perceived neighborhood social connectedness and whether these associations were mediated by walkability and park coverage.
METHODS: Data from the Current Population Survey September 2019 Volunteering and Civic Life Supplement were linked to U.S. county-level data on (1) population-level exposure to CRZ and an index of 10 A

Background Behavioral risk factors for cardiovascular diseases are prevalent among the urban poor in Nepal. Understanding environmental factors such as the availability of retailers selling tobacco, alcohol, and junk food, as well as neighbourhood access to and the built environment's support for physical activity is critical for addressing the rising burden of cardiovascular disease in the community. Objective To identify aspects of the community environment that contribute to behavioral risk factors, focusing on the food supply system, built environment, walkability, and the marketing, avail

Background: The relationship between alcohol availability and crime is relatively well established. On the other hand, alcohol availability in neighborhoods may result in excessive alcohol use that is associated with crime, and we know less about the role that binge drinking has in crime. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines binge drinking as "consuming 5 or more drinks on an occasion for men or 4 or more drinks on an occasion for women." Methods: In this study, we gathered Milwaukee, Wisconsin 2021 data on binge drinking from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a

BACKGROUND: Early exposure to neighborhood social fragmentation has been shown to be associated with schizophrenia. The impact of social fragmentation and friendships on distressing psychotic-like experiences (PLE) remains unknown. We investigate the relationships between neighborhood social fragmentation, number of friends, and distressing PLE among early adolescents.
METHODS: Data were collected from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Generalized linear mixed models tested associations between social fragmentation and distressing PLE, as well as the moderating role of the num

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injury is not evenly distributed by race and class in the USA. Black men are marginalized in the society, often reside in disadvantaged neighborhoods, and are at higher risk for injury mortality and ongoing physical and psychological problems following injury. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depressive symptom severity are among several problematic and disabling conditions faced by injury survivors. While much research has examined individual factors that lead to increased post-injury psychological symptom severity, the contribution of the social and physical en

BACKGROUND: Most socio-epidemiological studies on diabetes incidence, prevalence, or hospitalization focus on individual-level risk factors. This population-based cohort study sought to advance understanding on the associations of contextual characteristics and risk of diabetes-related avoidable hospitalization (DRAH) among at-risk Canadians.
DATA AND METHODS: A national cohort was compiled from the 2013/2014 Canadian Community Health Survey, representing 5.1 million adults aged 35 years and older, reporting having been diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease. Their informatio

PURPOSE: Neighborhood disadvantage has been associated with increased risk for pneumonia and influenza-associated hospitalizations. Few studies, however, have investigated how neighborhood disadvantage may influence immune-related illnesses. The aim of this study was to examine the association between neighborhooddisadvantage and immune-related illnesses.
METHODS: We used data from the Gulf Long-term Follow-up (GuLF) Study (n = 32,608). Our analytic sample included home visit participants (n = 11,193) who had complete information on exposure and covariates (n = 10,543). Neighborhood disadvant

OBJECTIVES: Gender-specific rates of unipolar and bipolar disorders are well established for cases with post-pubertal onset. However, there is less certainty about these rates in pre-pubertal children. We undertook a systematic review of community studies that report gender-specific rates for unipolar and bipolar disorders in young children, particularly cases of major depression and mania.
METHOD: Computer databases (Medline, EMBASE, Index to Theses, and PsychInfo) were searched for non-clinical observational studies using recognized diagnostic criteria to identify unipolar and bipolar disor

Children experience inequalities in health at household and neighbourhood level, even in wealthy countries. Measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic such as school closures, followed by the cost-of-living crisis, did not affect all children equally. This review aimed to understand the impact of socioeconomic adversity on child health and development following the COVID-19 pandemic. Systematic literature searches used the SPIDER tool to identify studies, and a convergent integrated approach to combine and synthesise quantitative and qualitative data. A mixed methods appraisal tool was used to

This scoping review aimed to understand the comprehensive evidence on solitary death occurring in the community. A database search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL using the following keywords: live alone, solitary death, and community. A manual search was also conducted using Google Scholar. Sixteen studies that met the inclusion criteria were reviewed. Approximately 60% of studies were retrospective, and 53.3% were conducted in Japan. The studies included in the review described solitary death using different expressions. However, they consistently encompassed th

OBJECTIVES: Intersecting global trends of population ageing and climate change have far-reaching implications for health and sustainability in cities and community contexts. Older adults are highly impacted by climate change, and yet reports of the implementation of the World Health Organizations' Age-Friendly Cities and Communities (AFCC) approach rarely examine the impacts of climate change on older adults. There is limited research on climate change interventions that target older populations. This rapid scoping review characterizes existing evidence in this area, including climate and heal

Standard environmental hazard exposure assessment methods have been primarily based on residential places, neglecting individuals' hazard exposures due to activities outside home neighborhood and underestimating peoples' overall hazard exposures. To address this limitation, this study proposes a novel mobility-based index for the hazard exposure evaluation. Using large-scale human mobility data, we quantify the extent of population dwell time in high environmental hazard places in 239 US counties for three environmental hazards. We explore how human mobility extends the reach of environmental

INTRODUCTION: Using data from the nationally representative longitudinal Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, the current study sought to examine associations between neighborhood disorder and physical characteristics of the neighborhood at child age three with the likelihood of experiencing physical and psychological abuse and neglect at age five.
METHODS: Negative binomial regression and zero inflated negative binomial regression models were used to estimate the associations.
RESULTS: Resident perceptions of neighborhood disorder and outside observation of neighborhood physical ch
