Social cohesion as a modifier of joint air pollution exposure and incident dementia.

Social cohesion can reduce stress, increase social interaction, and improve cognitive reserve. These social mechanisms may modify the effects of air pollution on dementia risk. This cohort study examines the potential moderating effect of social cohesion on associations between joint air pollution exposure and incident dementia leveraging data from 5112 community-dwelling adults ≥65 years of age enrolled in the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). Study participants were enrolled in 2011 and followed through 2018. We assigned 2010 residential census tract-level exposures to five air

Examining recurrent hurricane exposure and psychiatric morbidity in Medicaid-insured pregnant populations.

The wide-ranging mental health consequences of a major hurricane have been widely documented, but important gaps remain in understanding the mental health burden of recurrent exposure to multiple hurricanes. The objective of this study was to examine the mental health burden in at-risk pregnant populations recurrently exposed to major hurricanes Matthew (2016), Florence (2018), Michael (2018), and Dorian (2019). Daily emergency department (ED) admissions were obtained on pregnant Medicaid beneficiaries for incident maternal disorders of pregnancy (MDP), perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PM

The relationship between state-level structural racism and disparities between the non-hispanic black and non-hispanic white populations in multiple health outcomes.

AIMS: While several studies have examined the impact of individual indicators of structural racism on single health outcomes, few have explicitly modeled racial disparities in a wide range of health outcomes using a multidimensional, composite structural racism index. This paper builds on the previous research by examining the relationship between state-level structural racism and a wider array of health outcomes, focusing on racial disparities in mortality from firearm homicide, infant mortality, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, asthma, HIV, obesity, and kidney disease. METHODS: We used a pre

Pathways to child and adolescent psychiatric clinics: a multilevel study of the significance of ethnicity and neighbourhood social characteristics on source of referral.

BACKGROUND: In the Swedish society, as in many other societies, many children and adolescents with mental health problems do not receive the help they need. As the Swedish society becomes increasingly multicultural, and as ethnic and economic residential segregation become more pronounced, this study utilises ethnicity and neighbourhood context to examine referral pathways to child and adolescent psychiatric (CAP) clinics. METHODS: The analysis examines four different sources of referrals: family referrals, social/legal agency referrals, school referrals and health/mental health referrals. Th

Dietary Determinants of Type 2 Diabetes Among African American Populations: A Scoping Review Through a Socio-Ecological Lens.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes prevalence is 1.4-fold higher among Black/African American adults than the general U.S. POPULATION: African Americans are also disproportionately represented among lower-income groups with reduced access to healthy food retail, factors closely tied to the dietary exposures examined here. Dietary patterns emerge from multilevel influences, including food environments, cultural practices, and structural determinants. This scoping review, organized using the socio-ecological model (SEM), synthesized dietary determinants of type 2 diabetes across five SEM levels specif

Opioid use, prescribing and fatal overdose patterns among racial/ethnic minorities in the United States: A scoping review and conceptual risk environment model.

ISSUES: To date, there has been no synthesis of research addressing the scale and nuances of the opioid epidemic in racial/ethnic minority populations in the United States that considers the independent and joint impacts of dynamics such as structural disadvantage, provider bias, health literacy, cultural norms and various other risk factors. APPROACH: Using the "risk environment" framework, we conducted a scoping review on PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar of peer-reviewed literature and governmental reports published between January 2000 and February 2024 on the nature and scale of opioid u

Social inequities impact infant mortality due to congenital heart disease.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate how educational, economic, and racial residential segregation may impact congenital heart disease infant mortality (CHD-IM). STUDY DESIGN: This is a population-based US ecological study. METHODS: This study evaluated linked live birth-infant death files from the National Center for Health Statistics for live births from 2006 to 2018 with cause of death attributed to CHD. Maternal race and education data were obtained from the live birth-infant death files, and income data were obtained from the American Community Survey. Gender differences in COVID-19 knowledge, risk perception, and public stigma among the general community: Findings from a nationwide cross-sectional study in India.

INTRODUCTION: Individual and community characteristics predictive of knowledge, perception, and attitude on COVID-19, specifically on gender, have not been adequately explored. OBJECTIVE: To examine the gender differences in COVID-19 knowledge, self-risk perception and public stigma among the general community and to understand other socio-demographic factors which were predictive of them. METHOD: A nationally representative cross-sectional multi-centric survey was conducted among adult individuals(≥18 yrs) from the community member (N = 1978) from six states and one union territory of India

After the Maps: Assessing Longitudinal Neighborhood Change After Historical Redlining with Present-Day Breast Cancer Survival.

Historical redlining is a 1930s residential segregation policy that graded neighborhoods according to race, class, and land-use and has been linked to worse breast cancer outcomes today. Since redlining grades were determined by socioeconomic and environmental attributes, evaluating neighborhood change presents a unique opportunity to study the relative contributions of socioeconomic and physical environment to breast cancer. We evaluated whether longitudinal neighborhood change, specifically gentrification and disinvestment, is associated with survival among breast cancer cases today. We used

Design of the think PHRESH longitudinal cohort study: Neighborhood disadvantage, cognitive aging, and alzheimer's disease risk in disinvested, black neighborhoods.

BACKGROUND: Black Americans have disproportionately higher rates and earlier onset of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) relative to White Americans. We currently lack a comprehensive understanding of how the lived experience and broader societal factors, including cumulative exposure to structural racism and the mechanisms underlying the risks, may contribute to elevated ADRD risk in Black Americans. METHODS: The Think PHRESH study builds on existing, community-based research infrastructure, from the ongoing Pittsburgh Hill/Homewood Research on Neighborhood Change and Health (P

An epigenome-wide analysis of DNA methylation, racialized and economic inequities, and air pollution.

IMPORTANCE: DNA methylation (DNAm) provides a plausible mechanism by which adverse exposures become embodied and contribute to health inequities, due to its role in genome regulation and responsiveness to social and biophysical exposures tied to societal context. However, scant epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) have included structural and lifecourse measures of exposure, especially in relation to structural discrimination. OBJECTIVE: Our study tests the hypothesis that DNAm is a mechanism by which racial discrimination, economic adversity, and air pollution become biologically embodi

Housing instability patterns among low-income, urban Black young adults in California and associations with mental health outcomes: baseline data from a randomized waitlist-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Deep-rooted racial residential segregation and housing discrimination have given rise to housing disparities among low-income Black young adults in the US. Most studies have focused on single dimensions of housing instability, and thus provide a partial view of how Black young adults experience multiple, and perhaps overlapping, experiences of housing instability including homelessness, frequent moves, unaffordability, or evictions. We aimed to illuminate the multiple forms of housing instability that Black young adults contend with and examine relationships between housing instabi

Association of maternal education, neighborhood deprivation, and racial segregation with gestational age at birth by maternal race/ethnicity and United States Census region in the ECHO cohorts.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, disparities in gestational age at birth by maternal race, ethnicity, and geography are theorized to be related, in part, to differences in individual- and neighborhood-level socioeconomic status (SES). Yet, few studies have examined their combined effects or whether associations vary by maternal race and ethnicity and United States Census region. METHODS: We assembled data from 34 cohorts in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program representing 10,304 participants who delivered a liveborn, singleton infant from 2000 through 2019. Seasonal and spatial distribution of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in a municipal urban park in São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika are important arboviruses present in various countries of the world, the etiological agents of which are transmitted to human-beings by the bite of infected females of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Biological aspects of these vectors, such as their distribution and abundance, are influenced by climatic variables such as rainfall and temperature. We assess the spatial and seasonal distribution of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, during spring 2014 and spring 2015 and autumn 2015 and autumn 2016, in an urban Municipal Park, São Paulo (SP, Brazil),

Neighborhoods, Networks, and HIV Care Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: Proposal for a Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: The majority of people living with HIV in the United States are men who have sex with men (MSM), with race- and ethnicity-based disparities in HIV rates and care continuum. In order to uncover the neighborhood- and network-involved pathways that produce HIV care outcome disparities, systematic, theory-based investigation of the specific and intersecting neighborhood and social network characteristics that relate to the HIV care continuum must be engaged. OBJECTIVE: Using socioecological and intersectional conceptual frameworks, we aim to identify individual-, neighborhood-, and ne
