Patellar tendinopathy (PT) is a debilitating overuse injury, and one of the current recommended treatments is heavy slow resistance training (HSRT); Recently, low-load resistance training combined with blood flow restriction (LL-BFRT) has been advocated as a clinically relevant rehabilitation tool for PT since it does not involve large joint and tissue stresses and may accelerate recovery. This study aimed to investigate the effect of LL-BFRT compared with HSRT at 3, 6, 12 (primary endpoint), and 52 weeks. Participants with chronic unilateral PT were randomized to a 12-week rehabilitation prog

Combining traditional resistance and ballistic exercises in a complex training (CT) format has shown improved physical fitness compared to the control conditions. However, no meta-analysis has directly compared CT with traditional resistance training (RT) alone. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and WoS. Thirty-two studies involving 726 participants were included. Both RT and CT similarly improved one-repetition maximum (1RM) squat and bench press, 10 m and 30-60 m linear sprint time, squat jump height, jump power, reactive strength index, and standing long jump distance. INTRODUCTION: The world's population is ageing. Age-related declines in physical function negatively affect the quality of life but may be ameliorated by certain types of exercise. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of combining resistance training (RT) with balance training on physical function in older community-dwelling adults to provide a reference for this type of exercise compared with other exercises and to provide a theoretical basis for optimising exercise plans to improve physical function among older adults.
METHODS: This single-blind randomised controlled tria

BACKGROUND: This study examined the relationships between relative strength, training experience, body composition, and upper-body power performance assessed through the bench press throw (BPT).
METHODS: Thirty-one resistance-trained men aged 21.9±2.7 years, with a training experience: 4.3±1.5 years participated. Participants performed 1RM testing in the bench press and executed the BPT with 30% 1RM on a Smith machine, using a linear position transducer to record mean concentric velocity (MCV), bar displacement (BD), and relative power (RPO). Pearson's correlations and linear/quadratic regres

OBJECTIVE: Blood flow restriction (BFR) is a method used to affix a pneumatic cuff to the uppermost part of a leg. Blood flow restriction is often combined with low load-blood flow restriction training (LL-BFRt) to enhance strength and promote muscle hypertrophy. Therefore, this research aimed to examine the effect of LL-BFRt, sham LL-BFRt, and high load-resistance training (HL-Rt) on quadriceps strength (QS), dynamic stability, and functional performance.
DESIGN: Single-blinded randomized trial method.
SETTING: A private physical therapy clinic in Bali, Indonesia.
PARTICIPANTS: Data were c

OBJECTIVES: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with aerobic exercise (tDCS-AE) effectively reduces fatigue in patients with fibromyalgia. However, no study has assessed this method in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with significant fatigue. Therefore, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of tDCS-AE for significant fatigue symptoms in adult female SLE patients.
METHODS: This randomised, sham-controlled, double-blind study included 25 patients with SLE in remission or low disease activity (SLEDAI-2K £4) and with significant fatigue [≥36 points on the Fatigue Se

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is a chronic and progressive disease, which is accompanied by the decline in muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance with aging, and it can lead to falls, fracture, and premature death. The prevention and treatment of sarcopenia mainly include exercise therapy and nutritional supplement. Exercise therapy is one of the most potential interventions to prevent and/or delay the progression of sarcopenia. Resistance training (RT), one of the most commonly used exercise types, is widely used in the treatment of sarcopenia, while vibration training (VT) is a pr

PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate whether isometric resistance training (RT) leads to reticulospinal tract (RST) adaptations.
METHODS: A "RT group" of 30 healthy adults completed 4 weeks (15 sessions) of volume-matched unilateral elbow flexion RT involving high (32 repetitions/session at 70% maximal voluntary torque [MVT]) or low (64 repetitions/session at 35%MVT) loads. An additional 15 participants served as controls (CON group). Pre- and post-test MVT, RST properties (RST gain ratio derived from the StartReact assessment; startling auditory stimulus-conditioned/

BACKGROUND: Repeated exposure to large transient oscillations in mean arterial pressure (MAP)during resistance exercise may induce vascular adaptations and alter cerebrovascular regulation during systemic pressure challenges. This study characterized resting vascular and cerebrovascular function, the cerebral pressure-flow relationship during forced blood pressure oscillations, and cerebrovascular responses to leg press exercise with and without the Valsalva maneuver (VM) in resistance-trained and untrained individuals.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Historically, blood pressure (BP) guidelines emphasized the implementation of aerobic exercise. However, more recent guidelines started highlighting the benefits of resistance exercise. The primary aim of this brief review is to determine if resistance training offers comparable benefits to aerobic exercise on BP in individuals with hypertension. RECENT FINDINGS: Aerobic exercise training consistently produces the greatest effect, lowering systolic/diastolic BP by ~ 7/5 mmHg in individuals with hypertension. Dynamic resistance training elicits more modest reductions (~ 2/2 m

Meta-analyses have demonstrated that physical exercise is associated with a reduction in the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, whether resistance training (RT) has an impact on OSA severity remains less well established. In addition, the potential underlying mechanisms associated with improvements in OSA after resistance training also remain poorly understood. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an eight-week RT program on OSA severity. A secondary aim was to investigate potential mechanisms underlying improvements in OSA following RT. Randomized

This study focuses on the restricted accessibility for people who are unable to undertake lower limb resistance exercise independently. Many typical exercises rely on external equipment or assistance, which limits the options for many rehabilitation patients, such as those who have had a stroke, neuromuscular conditions, or surgery recovery. This study aimed to develop a low-cost, innovative 3D-printed exoskeleton knee brace (KB) for independent resistance training, targeting the knee extensors and flexors. The KB prototype was designed to provide comfort, safety, and a mix of lightweight and

BACKGROUND: Cancer induced cachexia, the involuntary loss of lean body mass and adipose tissue, is a debilitating syndrome experienced in up to 80% of all cancer patients. Cachexia is associated with poor treatment outcomes including decreased quality of life, increased risk of infection, disease progression, and mortality. Recent research suggests that exercise interventions may improve cachexia; however, there is a need for comprehensive and systematic review of the literature to evaluate the role of specific interventions on cancer-induced cachexia.

Despite some reported benefits, there is a low quality of evidence for resistance training (RT) improving metabolic health of individuals with overweight or obesity. We evaluated the impact of RT on body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and physical performance, lipid-lipoprotein profile, inflammation, and glucose-insulin homeostasis in 51 postmenopausal women versus 29 controls matched for age, obesity, and physical activity. Exercised women were further subdivided for comparison of RT effects into those presenting metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and those with metabolically u

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) has one of the highest mortality rates of all mental health disorders, low recovery rate and is associated with widespread endocrine dysfunction. Resistance training (RT) has been consistently shown to provide beneficial effects on health outcomes that are often negatively affected by AN, however participation in exercise is controversial for individuals with AN. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of maximal RT as an add-on to standard of care in patients with AN.
METHODS: Originally, a controlled clinical trial was planned but due to COVID-

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a hereditary disease characterized by muscular impairments. Fundamental and clinical positive effects of strength training have been reported in men with DM1, but its impact on women remains unknown. We evaluated the effects of a 12-week supervised strength training on physical and neuropsychiatric health. Women with DM1 performed a twice-weekly supervised resistance training program (3 series of 6-8 repetitions of squat, leg press, plantar flexion, knee extension, and hip abduction). Lower limb muscle strength, physical function, apathy, anxiety and depressi

This study aimed to explore if the effects of caffeine intake on resistance exercise and jumping performance are moderated by training status. We included ten resistance-trained and ten recreationally active males in a randomized, double-blind, crossover study. Participants were categorized into groups according to their resistance to training experience and muscular strength levels. Exercise performance outcomes included weight lifted and mean velocity during a one-repetition maximum (1RM) bench press and squat; repetitions were performed to muscular failure in the same exercises with 70% of

Strength and selective motor control are primary determinants of pathological gait in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and other neuromotor disorders. Emerging evidence suggests robotic application of task-specific resistance to functional movements may provide the opportunity to strengthen muscles and improve neuromuscular function during walking in children with CP. Such a strategy could be most beneficial to children who are more severely affected by the pathology but their ability to overcome such resistance and maintain functional ambulation remains unclear. The goal of this study was to
