Children with chronic or disabling conditions use health, education and social services at a higher rate than their healthy peers. Estimates of the number of children in need of these specialized services are widely varied and often depend on categorical definitions that do not account for either the diversity or commonality of their experiences. Developing methods for identifying the population in need of services, particularly children likely to use long-term ancillary (audiology, occupational, physical or speech therapy, or social work) and/or enabling services (special equipment, personal

PURPOSE: We analyzed gender differences in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and associated factors between informal male and female caregivers in Spain. It is important because of growing rates of dependent people and dwindling public resources.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 610 informal caregivers (265 male and 345 female) using an ad hoc structured questionnaire. We performed a descriptive analysis and used multivariate logistic regression to analyze the risk of poor HRQoL, measured with the EQ-5D-5L, according to caregiver sex, sociodemographic characteristics of c

La Crosse virus is a rare infection in humans that can cause encephalopathy and neuroinvasive disease following infection. While pediatric outcomes have been studied, long-term neuropsychological and functional outcomes in adults remain undocumented. This case report compares existing literature with the extended clinical course of a 19-year-old, young adult male Marine recruit who contracted LACV. The Marine presented with lethargy, altered mental status, and abnormal neuroimaging. After improvements in alertness and command following, he was transferred from acute care to an inpatient neuror

This paper aims to define the role of the primary care physician (PCP) in the management of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to propose a model for a work plan. The proposals in this position paper stem from a collaborative work of experts involved in the care of AD patients. It combines evidence from a literature review and expert's opinions who met in Paris, France, on July 2009 during the International Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology (IAGG) World Congress. The PCP's intervention appears essential at many levels: detection of the onset of dementia, diagnostic management, treatment and

Anthropogenic underwater noise is a global pollutant of increasing concern but its impact on reproduction in fish is largely unknown. Hence, a better understanding of its consequences for this important link to fitness is crucial. Working in aquaria, we experimentally tested the impact of broadband noise exposure (added either continuously or intermittently), compared to a control, on the behaviour and reproductive success of the common goby (Pomatoschistus microps), a vocal fish with exclusive paternal care. Compared to the intermittent noise and control treatments, the continuous noise treat

The late 1960s was a period of significant upheaval of social, cultural, and scientific norms. The generally accepted notion of mandatory laparotomy for all penetrating abdominal injuries was among those norms being called into question across the country and many advocated expectant management of selected patients presenting with this type of injury. Leaders of the surgical community published opinions on either side of the argument. The house staff at Charity Hospital during this period was among the busiest in the nation in treating these injuries, many of them inmates of the Louisiana Stat

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Palliative care (PC) has traditionally focused on patients with cancer and their families. However, individuals living with advanced non-malignant chronic diseases and their caregivers face comparable challenges that significantly affect their quality of life. This study aimed to explore the PC needs of patients with advanced non-malignant chronic conditions through the lived experiences of both patients and their informal caregivers.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight patients and nine caregivers recruited via the Municipality of Katerini "He

Kleefstra Syndrome (KLEFS1) is a monogenic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmental delays, somatic issues, and (neuro)psychiatric symptoms. Individuals with KLEFS1 often require complex, ongoing support, which significantly impacts family life. To effectively improve care and support for families, a better understanding is needed of the impacts of raising a child with KLEFS1 on the family and families' support needs. We conducted a semi-structured interview study among parents of children with KLEFS1 to investigate these impacts. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcrib

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Becoming spousal caregivers for persons with young-onset dementia (YOD) is an unexpected event that deviates from the normal life course trajectory, creating unique and profound challenges. Understanding their burden, its primary sources, and their coping resources is essential for developing tailored support.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We employed a mixed-methods approach to comprehensively understand the caregiving burden experienced by 11 community-dwelling spousal caregivers of YOD. We used the Zarit Burden Interview to quantify caregiving burden and conducted

Background: Infants born with single ventricle heart disease require in-home medicalized care during the interstage period (time between the first and second staged heart surgery). These caregivers rely on extended family, friends, and hired caretakers to provide respite time. However, the coronavirus pandemic removed these families' options due to stay-at-home and social distancing directives. We explored the caregivers' experiences during the interstage period, including impacts on their lifestyle, as they managed their infants' critical needs during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. BACKGROUND: The support of family caregivers is vital in home-based palliative care, ensuring quality care for patients with palliative care needs. In their commitment to prioritising the well-being of their loved ones, caregivers often neglect their own physical and emotional health, leading to varying degrees of caregiving burden. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of caregiver burden and identify the key factors associated with it among family caregivers of patients receiving services from a palliative care institution in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Caring for a person with dementia places a significant burden upon informal caregivers and leads to decreased psychological and physical health, which is why dementia caregiver interventions have been developed. However, empirical evidence for the efficacy of those interventions is inconclusive and the last comprehensive meta-analysis (Pinquart & Sörensen. Helping caregivers of persons with dementia: Which interventions work and how large are their effects? International Psychogeriatrics. 2006;18(4), 577-595.) was published more than 10 years ago.

Recent concern about the needs of developmentally disabled children living at home has led to increased attention to family support programs. Home care service is one family support option which should be viewed as a basic fundamental support strategy. An exploratory study of a small number of families caring for developmentally disabled children in New York City indicates that publicly-funded home care produces a great number of benefits for this special population.

OBJECTIVE: Children with medical technology dependence (MTD) are frequently readmitted to the hospital. However, due to their medical fragility, it is often difficult to untangle the root causes for readmissions to identify the most effective preventive approaches. We sought to explore environmental and family factors driving hospital readmissions for children with MTD.
DESIGN: Semi-structured, in-person interviews were conducted with state-wide care coordinators for children with MTD in Illinois with at least 1 year of experience. Interview topics related to children with MTD transitioning f
