BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim was to investigate the prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS), fatigue and daytime sleepiness in a large cohort of patients affected by post polio syndrome (PPS) and their impact on patient health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared with healthy subjects.
METHODS: PPS patients were evaluated by means of the Stanford Sleepiness Scale and the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). The Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire was utilized to assess HRQoL in PPS. RLS was diagnosed when standard criteria were met. Age and sex matched healthy controls were recr

Restless legs syndrome is a common, potentially disabling condition that affects about 10% to 15% of the general population and yet is often unrecognized and misdiagnosed. It is mainly diagnosed clinically and only rarely requires polysomnography. The condition is usually primary and treatable. First, however, secondary causes should be sought, especially iron deficiency and peripheral neuropathy, because when the source is an accompanying factor or condition, the syndrome may be curable. The most effective drugs are dopaminergic agents, clonazepam, opioids, gabapentin, and clonidine. Addition

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is generally considered a chronic neurological condition or a post-stroke complication. However, its sudden onset as a presenting feature of acute stroke is rarely reported. We present a case of acute cerebral hemorrhage manifesting solely as sudden-onset RLS without other neurological deficits. A 58-year-old woman experienced an abrupt onset of an irresistible urge to move her legs. Upon arrival at the emergency department, she continued to experience this urge and displayed rhythmic leg trembling. Moving her legs relieved her discomfort, and she was able to consc

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a common yet frequently under-diagnosed condition. The exact pathophysiology is unknown, however multiple factors including genetic factors, brain iron deficiency and dysfunction of dopaminergic system are associated with RLS. It is a clinical diagnosis confirmed by International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) consensus diagnostic criteria (2012). Several pharmacological and non - pharmacological management options are available for treatment of RLS. Non-pharmacological management options include lifestyle modifications, therapeutic exercises (aerobi

BACKGROUND: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological sensorimotor disorder characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs. In the perioperative period, patients with RLS may experience an acute exacerbation of symptoms. Although studies on the exacerbation of RLS after brain surgery are limited, we present a case wherein symptoms worsened following left amygdalohippocampectomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old woman diagnosed with mesiotemporal lobe epilepsy accompanied by left hippocampal sclerosis underwent a left amygdalohippocampectomy. The patient reported uncomfortable s

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate alterations in cerebellar volume and the intrinsic cerebellar network in patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS).
METHODS: We recruited 69 patients with RLS and 50 healthy controls who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including three-dimensional T1-weighted imaging. The total cerebellar volume and cerebellar volume subdivisions were analyzed through automatic cerebellum anatomical parcellation using U-Net with locally constrained optimization program. The intrinsic cerebellar network was calculated through brain analysis using a graph th

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a sleep-related movement disorder, which can also result from brainstem pathology. A systematic review of articles published in the electronic databases PubMed and Web of Science was conducted to summarize the existent literature on RLS associated with a brainstem stroke. We identified eight articles including 19 subjects with RLS due to brainstem ischemic lesion. The symptoms occurred simultaneously with the infarction (66.7%) or few days after (33.3%). The most common location of infarction was pons and less commonly medulla. In most cases (68.4%), symptoms we

BACKGROUND: Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) can be defined as a sleep disorder. However, whether changes in the serum vitamin B12 levels are involved in the pathophysiological mechanism of RLS remains unclear. Our study aimed to determine whether vitamin B12 levels are independently related to the occurrence of RLS.
METHODS: The serum vitamin B12 levels of 80 patients with RLS and 80 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HC) were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: Serum vitamin B12 levels in the RLS group were significantly reduced, while the levels of creatinine, and homocysteine were high

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this article, the different sleep-related movement disorders are discussed with special attention given to restless legs syndrome (RLS).
RECENT FINDINGS: The differential diagnosis of sleep-related movement disorders can often be challenging; therefore, it is essential to have accurate information to make a correct diagnosis. This article focuses on RLS, highlighting the change in the paradigm of initial treatment, the role played by iron (pathophysiologic and therapeutic), and how to approach possible complications occurring with long-term treatment.
SUMMARY: RLS is on

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensory-motor neurological disorder characterized by uncomfortable sensations in the extremities, generally at night, which is often relieved by movements. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified mutations in BTBD9 conferring a higher risk of RLS. Knockout of the BTBD9 homolog in mice (Btbd9) and fly results in motor restlessness and sleep disruption. Clinical studies have found RLS patients have structural and functional abnormalities in the striatum; however, whether and how striatal pathology contributes to the pathogenesis of RLS is not know

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs accompanied by uncomfortable sensations that occur at night or at time of rest. Pharmacological therapy should be limited to patients who suffer from clinically relevant symptoms. Chronic RLS is usually treated with either a dopamine agonist (pramipexole, ropinirole, rotigotine) or an α2δ calcium-channel ligand (gabapentin, gabapentin enacarbil, pregabalin). Augmentation is the main complication of long-term dopaminergic treatment, and frequently requires a reduction of current

Theories for restless legs syndrome (RLS) pathogenesis include iron deficiency, dopamine dysregulation and peripheral neuropathy. Increased prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in controlled studies in RLS and case reports of post-infectious RLS suggest potential roles for inflammation and immunological alterations. A literature search for all conditions associated with RLS was performed. These included secondary RLS disorders and factors that may exacerbate RLS. All of these conditions were reviewed with respect to potential pathogenesis including reports of iron deficie

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) in the paediatric age is a common disorder and is in many cases associated to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Yet, it remains 'the great unknown' in paediatrics. We do not usually think of it when examining a child with sleep problems, and there is even a tendency to deny its existence in children. ADHD and RLS have common symptoms and frequently share a common aetiopathogenesis (iron deficiency anaemia). Although important progress has been made in recent years in the research conducted on both disorders, further studies must be carried out to exa
