The reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (RET-He) is presented as a biomarker for the diagnostics and monitoring of iron deficiency. The marker is independent of the acute phase and can be determined within a few minutes by a blood count. Due to the approximately 120-day lifetime of erythrocytes, iron deficiency and changes in the iron status of erythropoiesis can first be recognized at a relatively late stage using classical hematological parameters, such as hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, mean cellular hemoglobin content and also with determination of hypochromic erythrocytes (% hypo). Southeast Asian Ovalocytosis results from a heterozygous deletion of 9 amino acids in the erythrocyte anion exchange protein AE1 (band 3). The report of the first successful birth of an individual homozygous for this mutation showed an association with severe dyserythropoietic anemia. Imaging of the proband's erythrocytes revealed the presence of band 3 at their surface, a reduction in Wr(b) antigen expression, and increases in glycophorin C, CD44, and CD147 immunoreactivity. Immunoblotting of membranes from heterozygous Southeast Asian Ovalocytosis red cells showed a quantitative increase in

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Mediators of adhesion become a potential new target for pharmacological therapy to struggle the complications of sickle cell disease (SCD). Several mechanisms for increased adherence have been postulated and the well-studied are CD36 and VLA4 which encoded by ITGA4. Herein, we sought to determine whether one polymorphism of CD36 namely: rs1984112 and three exons of ITGA4 (4, 5, and 6) are implicated in hemolytic status and clinical events among SCD Tunisian patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study enrolled 99 unrelated Tunisian subjects (63SS and 36Sβ). All SCD patients

UNLABELLED: A prospective sequential, multicentre trial was conducted to determine the association between erythropoietin (EPO) plasma levels and the erythropoietic response to recombinant human erythropoietin (r-HuEPO) during long-term treatment of premature infants. Twenty-nine infants, gestational ages 26-34 weeks and postnatal ages more than 14 days, received 600 IU r-HuEPO per kg per week divided into three doses subcutaneously for haemoglobin levels less than 120 g/l or haematocrit less than 36% over a period of 4 weeks. Eight additional patients were studied for a total of 10 weeks. EPO

BACKGROUND: Anemia is the most common health problem affecting approximately one-third of the population worldwide, with 50% of patients suffering from iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). Hematological parameters along with peripheral smear finding may help in picking up patients with IDA but are insensitive to early stages of iron deficiency. Serum iron studies are required for confirmation but these are affected by inflammation, infection, and liver disease. Reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (Ret He) measures the hemoglobin (HGB) content in circulating reticulocytes, reflecting iron availability

BACKGROUND: : The immature platelet fraction (IPF) is a platelet-related RNA biomarker reflecting thrombopoiesis in vivo and providing immediate information about bone marrow reactivity. Despite being recognized as a reliable marker of erythropoiesis, Immature Reticulocyte Fraction (IRF) is widely utilized whereas IPF is still poorly known in spite of the diagnostic and prognostic value of this marker.
OBJECTIVES: : To review comprehensively the biology, methodology, and clinical application of IPF in humans and dogs and to assess the complementarity of IPF to IRF.
METHODS: : The current lit

Background Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) continues to be a major global health concern, especially in India. Serum ferritin, a conventional marker for iron deficiency, is considered unreliable in inflammatory conditions. Reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (Ret-He) reflects real-time iron availability for erythropoiesis and may overcome this limitation. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of Ret-He and compare it with serum ferritin in detecting IDA in patients receiving treatment at an Eastern Indian tertiary care facility. Methods A hospital-based observational study was condu

BACKGROUND: Serum ferritin and iron have high inter-individual variability and inflammatory sensitivity, limiting its diagnostic value in several clinical settings. The Reticulocyte Subpopulation Analysis may indicate iron availability during erythropoiesis in real time.
AIM: This study investigated the associations between reticulocyte parameters and various hematological and iron-related biomarkers in Iron Deficiency Anemia.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 150 patients with IDA (Iron Deficiency Anemia) were included (146 females, 97.3%; 23 pregnant, 15.8%; 12 on iron treatment, 8.0%)

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) diagnosis in cirrhotic patients is challenging due to the confounding effects of inflammation and altered iron metabolism. Conventional markers, such as the iron profile, may be unreliable in this population. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr), percentage of microcytic red blood cells (%MicroR), and percentage of hypochromic red blood cells (%HypoR) for the diagnosis of IDA in cirrhotic patients.
METHODS: Four groups were included in this cross-sectional study: healthy controls, IDA non-ci

INTRODUCTION: Plasmodium vivax is the most widespread cause of malaria outside Africa. Developing effective controls is challenging because P. vivax exclusively invades reticulocytes, immature erythrocytes that are scarce and short-lived. This limits opportunities to culture the parasite and investigate the receptor-ligand interactions crucial for host cell invasion.
METHODS: The erythroid cell lines JK-1 and BEL-A were evaluated in vitro as reticulocyte surrogates to assess their susceptibility to P. vivax invasion. Comparative membrane proteomics of these cell lines, reticulocytes, and matu

Reticulocyte hemoglobin (CHr) is a measure of the amount of hemoglobin in reticulocytes and a marker of cell hemoglobinization. In this study, we aimed to find the optimal cut-off point for reticulocyte hemoglobin to diagnose iron deficiency anemia using multiple methods. A total of 309 patients were included. The median age at diagnosis was 54 years. Most were females (71.2%). 68% had iron deficiency anemia. Patients with IDA had significantly lower levels of CHr compared to those who had non-IDA (p < 0.0001). The optimal cut-off value of CHr for detecting IDA, determined using various method

BACKGROUND: The two major causes of microcytic anemia are iron deficiency and thalassemia. In clinical practice, in some cases, differentiation of microcytic and hypochromic anemia become difficult on the basis of traditional red cell parameters. This study primarily aimed to evaluate the usefulness of red cell distribution width (RDW), immature reticulocyte fraction (IRF), and reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (Ret-He) in the discrimination of alpha thalassemia, beta thalassemia, and latent iron deficiency.
METHODS: In this retrospective study laboratory data including complete blood counts

BACKGROUND: We previously showed that the content of reticulocyte hemoglobin (CHr) is a reliable measure of iron status in chronic dialysis patients with erythrocytopoiesis. The CHr was significantly correlated with conventional parameters of iron deficiency in dialysis patients. We attempted to utilize the measurement of CHr levels to monitor iron status and clarify the changes in iron levels that occur as renal anemia progresses in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF).
METHODS: We measured CHr, iron parameters, and the intrinsic erythropoietin (EPO) concentration in nondialysis CRF pat

Spherocytic red cells with reduced membrane surface area are a feature of hereditary spherocytosis (HS) and some forms of autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). It is generally assumed that membrane loss in spherocytic red cells occurs during their sojourn in circulation. The structural basis for membrane loss in HS is improper assembly of membrane proteins, whereas in AIHA it is due to partial phagocytosis of circulating red cells by macrophages. A hypothesis was formed that these different mechanisms should lead to temporal differences in surface area loss during red cell genesis and during soj

Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) is a haemolytic disease characterized by complement-sensitive red blood cells (RBC). PNH-affected RBC (PNH-RBC) should have a shortened mean lifespan (MLS); however, direct measurement is difficult. We have recently developed a sensitive flow cytometric assay to analyse PNH-affected reticulocytes that may closely correspond to the PNH clone-derived erythropoiesis. Naturally, the CD59-negative populations in reticulocytes were larger than those in whole RBC in PNH. We estimated the MLS of PNH-RBC in six PNH patients from the differences in the ratios o
