Multiple intravenous injections (30 micrograms, ten times) in ICR mice of trehalose dimycolate and glucose monomycolate from Nocardia rubra, containing C36-48 mycolic acids, showed a prominent antitumor effect on a subcutaneously implanted sarcoma-180, an allogeneic sarcoma of mice with a significant granuloma formation in lungs, spleen and liver. On the other hand, mycoloyl glycolipids other than glucose monomycolate and trehalose dimycolate, such as mannose or fructose mycolate, showed no significant activity for tumor regression or granuloma formation in mice. Trehalose dimycolate and gluco

Interstitial and bronchointerstitial pneumonias of undetermined etiology in young foals are relatively common in autopsy services with an equine focus. Unknown viruses, toxins, hyperthermia, surfactant or alveolar macrophage function deficiency, certain antibiotics, and aberrant responses to Rhodococcus equi or other bacteria have been proposed as causes. We performed a retrospective study of autopsies on foals with a diagnosis of interstitial or bronchointerstitial pneumonia with an unidentified etiology. Forty-one foals (median age: 3-mo-old) were included. Most were received in summer (n =

Seven genomes of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis biovar equi were sequenced on the Ion Torrent PGM platform, generating high-quality scaffolds over 2.35 Mbp. This bacterium is the causative agent of disease known as "pigeon fever" which commonly affects horses worldwide. The pangenome of biovar equi was calculated and two phylogenomic approaches were used to identify clustering patterns within Corynebacterium genus. Furthermore, other comparative analyses were performed including the prediction of genomic islands and prophages, and SNP-based phylogeny. In the phylogenomic tree, C. pseudotub

Diacron-reactive oxygen metabolite (d-ROM) and biological antioxidant potential (BAP) levels in the serum of horses were measured (ponies, n = 15; thoroughbred, n = 31; other full-sized horses, n = 7). The mean d-ROM levels in horses were significantly higher (p < 0.001) than those in dairy cattle (n = 25) and dogs (n = 31). However, d-ROM levels in horses were lower than the standard levels reported in humans. When d-ROM and BAP levels were plotted graphically, the points for horses with a disease (ringbone in 1 Japanese sports horse, cellulitis in 1 thoroughbred, melanoma in 1 Lipizzaner) fe

We investigated the effects of season and geographic location on detection of nucleic acids of potential enteric pathogens (PEPs) or their toxins (PEP-Ts) in feces of horses ≥6-mo-old in the United States. Results of 3,343 equine diarrhea PCR panels submitted to Idexx Laboratories for horses >6-mo-old were reviewed. Submission months were grouped into 4 seasons, and states were grouped into 4 geographic regions. Logistic regression was performed to assess effects of season and region on detection rates of PEPs and PEP-Ts. Agresti-Coull CIs were determined. Detection rate of Salmonella enterica

Following treatment for pneumonia, a 1-y-old female Nubian goat was presented because of a persistent fever for 3 mo and peripheral lymphadenopathy for 1 mo. Cytology and histology of the superficial cervical and prefemoral lymph nodes demonstrated a moderate-to-marked "left-shifted" lymphoid population, suggestive of lymphoma, and extremely rare extracellular, 2-4 µm, oval, basophilic yeast, consistent with Histoplasma capsulatum. On immunohistochemistry, >95% of the lymphocytes demonstrated positive cytoplasmic and membranous immunoreactivity for CD3. Histoplasma spp. urine antigen and serum

Secondary hypogammaglobulinemia may be a relevant predisposing condition in patients with recurrent bacterial upper airway disease (pneumonia, sinusitis) or first-time opportunistic infection, particularly if additional immunosuppressive factors like underlying hematological disease or immunosuppressive therapy are present. As an example, we present a retired farmer with myeloma, treated Hodgkin-lymphoma and hypogammaglobulinemia suffering from the third episode of Rhodococcus equi pneumonia. Screening for hypogammaglobulinemia is recommended in patients with unexplained recurrent bacterial ai

A prospective study was conducted to determine the etiology, clinical features, and outcome in a series of 32 consecutively enrolled HIV-infected patients with prolonged fever in whom high resolution (7.5 Mhz) sonography revealed multiple splenic microabscesses. Conventional (3.5 Mhz) sonography showed no splenic abnormalities in any patients. The diagnoses were: tuberculosis (14), visceral leishmaniasis (7), disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex infection (5), Salmonella spp. bacteremia (2), lymphoma (2), disseminated Rhodococcus equi infection (1), disseminated Candida krusei infection (1

The present study was designed to characterize phenotypically and genotypically an Arcanobacterium haemolyticum strain (A. haemolyticum P646) isolated from a purulent nasal discharge of a donkey. A. haemolyticum P646 showed, compared to sheep blood, an enhanced hemolytic reaction on rabbit blood agar, a synergistic CAMP-like reaction with Streptococcus agalactiae and Rhodococcus equi as indicator strains, a reverse CAMP reaction in the zone of Staphylococcus aureus beta-hemolysin and the typical biochemical properties of this species. The species identity could be confirmed by MALDI-TOF MS ana

The recovery of an unusual organism in the clinical microbiology laboratory may be an indicator of an immunological abnormality in the patient. For instance, an important relationship between Clostridium septicum and colon carcinoma as well as between leukemia or lymphoma with species frequently considered contaminants (Bacillus spp., Corynebacterium spp.) or others rarely isolated from different contexts (Capnocytophaga spp.) were described. Some bacteria are almost exclusively isolated from AIDS patients (Rhodococcus equi). Campylobacter spp., Aeromonas spp., group G and mitis group streptoc

Damage to local and systemic host defenses of the lung makes the immunocompromised patient vulnerable to inhaled microorganisms. When a pulmonary infiltrate occurs, the array of possibilities is very large including conventional and opportunistic agents. The type of underlying disease and its associated immunodeficiency allow a high degree of accurate pathogen prediction. Neutropenia is associated with Gram-negative bacilli pneumonia. Prolonged neutropenia increases the risk of invasive aspergillosis and other unusual mycotic agents. Cellular immunodeficiency is associated with intracellular m

The 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene of the phylogenetic subdivision containing gram-positive bacteria with a high G + C content was detected specifically in clinical specimens from patients suspected of having Whipple's disease. The primary structure of 16S rDNA amplified from clinical samples was determined by cloning and sequencing. Two sorts of sequences were identified: one corresponded exactly to the rRNA sequence of Tropheryma whippelii (GenBank accession no. M87484) while the other was related to that of members of the genus Corynebacterium. No sequence related to Mycobacterium spp. or Rh

Owing to the predominance of gram-positive pathogens in neutropenic cancer patients, newer generation quinolones with an expanded gram-positive spectrum and enhanced potency, may have a role to play for prophylaxis and/or empiric therapy in such patients. The in vitro activity of gatifloxacin was compared with that of ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and trovafloxacin against 848 recent clinical isolates from cancer patients. Against gram-positive organisms, gatifloxacin was the most active agent tested inhibiting all Aerococcus, Listeria monocytogens, Micrococcus, Stomatococcus mucilaginous, Bacil

Specific infections and neoplasms that are complications of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) occur within various CD4 lymphocyte count ranges. Knowledge of how these counts correlate with radiographic appearances of these entities can limit the differential diagnosis because certain conditions are uncommon above a specific count. In patients with CD4 lymphocyte counts above 200 cells/mm3 and radiographic findings of cavitary and noncavitary consolidation, bacterial pneumonia and Mycobacterium tuberculosis are the major diagnostic considerations. As the CD4 lymphocyte count falls, thes

The rise of antibiotic resistance is a global health crisis affecting human and veterinary medicine, highlighted within the One Health framework. Horses, classified as both meat and companion animals, play a crucial role in facilitating resistant bacteria spread to humans. Despite increased awareness and reduced antibiotic use in livestock, data on equine antibiotic use and resistance remain limited. This retrospective study examines antimicrobial resistance in 978 bacterial isolates from horses in Poland over 12 years (2010-2022), utilizing data from the Microbiological Diagnostic Laboratory

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is a bacillus that causes caseous lymphadenitis in small ruminants, leading to great losses to rural producers; thus, an efficient diagnosis is necessary for using disease control measures. This study aimed to evaluate the antigenic potential of four C. pseudotuberculosis recombinant proteins (rSodC, rPknG, rNanH, and rSpaC) against sera of goat and sheep experimentally infected with one of three different C. pseudotuberculosis strains. Goats were infected with CAP76 or CAP21 strain (n = 10), sheep with VD57 strain (n = 6), and a group of not-infected animals
