In recent years, anti-allergic effects of food factors have been attracting attention as a treatment for allergic diseases with fewer side effects. Previous study demonstrated that oral administration of the polysaccharide from Pyropia yezoensis f. narawaensis (PPY) to mice improved allergic responses, and that the suppressive effect involved an increase in IL-10 secretion into the blood. However, it was not clear how IL-10 secretion was related to the anti-allergic activity of oral administration of PPY. The aim of the present study was to investigate the mechanism of anti-allergic effect of

A series of bromophenol derivatives were synthesized and evaluated as protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) inhibitors in vitro and in vivo based on bromophenol 4e (IC(50)=2.42 μmol/L), which was isolated from red algae Rhodomela confervoides. The results showed that all of the synthesized compounds displayed weak to good PTP1B inhibition at tested concentration. Among them, highly brominated compound 4g exhibited promising inhibitory activity against PTP1B with IC(50) 0.68 μmol/L, which was approximately fourfold more potent than lead compound 4e. Further, compound 4g demonstrated high sele

Diet composition shapes gut microbiota, influencing nutrient utilization, health, and growth. The shift toward sustainable ingredients such as soybean meal (SB) and seaweed (SW) requires an understanding of their effects on the gut microbiota. This study investigated how SB and SW diets modulate gut microbiota and predicted functional profile in Nile tilapia. Fish were assigned to four dietary treatments for 62 days: fishmeal (FM), SB, SW, and a natural meal (NM, non-formulated diet). Gut microbiota were characterized using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and functional potential was inferred using

Obesity is a major global health issue linked to metabolic disorders, chronic inflammation, and systemic complications, with high-fat diets (HFDs) playing a key role by disrupting intestinal balance and promoting oxidative stress. This study investigates Protaetia brevitarsis-derived protein hydrolysate (PBPH), an insect-derived bioactive peptide extract, as a potential intervention to counteract HFD-induced metabolic disturbances. Female ICR mice were divided into three groups: control diet, HFD, and HFD + PBPH, with PBPH (obtained by alcalase hydrolysis and ultrafiltration) administered dail

This study utilizes different emerging green extraction technologies to recover maximum value-added products from Kappaphycus alvarezii and evaluate their bio-functional properties. Using the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method, the total lipid yield of 0.21 ± 0.2 % was obtained from the biomass. Linoleic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, arachidonic acid, γ-linolenic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid were present in higher concentrations (9.12 %) in the lipid extracted with SFE as compared to hexane (5.5 %). Using an ultrasonication assisted approach, ~56 % of κ-carrageenan was recovered from

In order to find new anti-browning and whitening agents in this study, we investigated 43 indigenous marine algae for tyrosinase inhibitory activity. The extracts from Endarachne binghamiae, Schizymenia dubyi, Ecklonia cava (EC) and Sargassum silquastrum (SS) evidenced potent tyrosinase inhibitory activity similar to that of positive control, kojic acid. Among those marine algae, EC and SS are distributed abundantly on Jeju Island. Therefore, we selected those two species for further studies. Our results evidenced that both species reduced cellular melanin synthesis and tyrosinase activity. On

Taste perception plays a central role in fish feeding behaviour by influencing feed recognition, intake, and nutrient sensing. As aquaculture increasingly adopts plant-based ingredients to replace fishmeal, understanding how these diets affect gustatory mechanisms is critical. This study evaluated TAS-family taste receptor genes in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed nutritionally formulated diets containing fishmeal (TFM), soybean meal (TSB), red seaweed (Kappaphycus sp., TSW), alongside a natural meal (TNM) reference. Fish were reared for 62 days under controlled conditions, after which
