Women and AIDS: an analysis of media misrepresentations.

A close reading of popular discourses on women and the AIDS epidemic reveals the ways in which such depictions produce and reiterate power-laden notions of normative sexuality. Prostitutes, one frequently depicted 'kind' of woman, are presented as indiscriminate, polluting to men and categorically different from 'normal' women. Other women depicted in AIDS discourses are almost always HIV-positive mothers or pregnant women; these women are usually only of concern insofar as they may infect their babies. The themes of self-control, self-discipline and personal responsibility may also stigmatize

Musculoskeletal discomfort of music teachers: an eight-year perspective and psychosocial work factors.

Musicians at all levels of performance, especially string players, are known to have a high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The disorders seem to be most common in the neck, shoulders and low back. In 1988, a survey of the work-related musculoskeletal disorders of 36 music teachers was carried out at a music school in northern Sweden. In 1996, the teachers were reinvestigated. The study also included an investigation of the psychosocial work environment according to the Karasek demand-control theory, as well as measurements of upper-arm elevation during a working day in f

Subtle cognitive deficits after cerebellar infarcts.

The role of the cerebellum in cognitive functions has been under debate. We investigated the neuropsychological functioning of patients with cerebellar lesions (infarcts) and evaluated the significance of laterality in cognitive symptoms. Twenty-six patients with exclusive cerebellar lesions as verified by clinical and neuroradiological findings underwent a neuropsychological assessment at the acute stage and at 3 months. Their performance was compared with 14 controls, also assessed twice. The focus was on four domains: visuospatial/motor functions, episodic memory, working memory and attenti

Effects of levodopa on corticostriatal circuits supporting working memory in Parkinson's disease.

Working memory dysfunction is common in Parkinson's disease, even in its early stages, but its neural basis is debated. Working memory performance likely reflects a balance between corticostriatal dysfunction and compensatory mechanisms. We tested this hypothesis by examining working memory performance with a letter n-back task in 19 patients with mild-moderate Parkinson's disease and 20 demographically matched healthy controls. Parkinson's disease patients were tested after an overnight washout of their usual dopamine replacement therapy, and again after a standard dose of levodopa. FMRI was

Irreversible Blindness Following Periocular Autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma Skin Rejuvenation Treatment.

A 49-year-old woman developed acute visual loss in the right eye following bilateral cosmetic platelet-rich plasma injections to rhytids in the glabellar region. External exam showed skin necrosis in the region over the right rhytids and restricted right ocular motility. Dilated fundus exam was significant for ophthalmic artery occlusion. Imaging revealed right eye extraocular muscle ischemia and optic nerve infarction, along with right frontal, parietal, and occipital lobe infarction. Work-up for thromboembolic and vascular etiologies were negative. To our knowledge, this is the first case re

Challenging the US Supreme Court's Majority Ruling on Roe v. Wade at the International Human Rights Level.

This paper proposes that US human rights experts and abortion rights advocates challenge the striking down of Roe v. Wade in June 2022 by the majority of US Supreme Court justices because of the multiple human rights violations it has engendered. The paper has three parts. The first part summarizes the compelling response of the three dissenting Supreme Court justices to the majority ruling, which spells out those violations in detail. The second part offers a history of cases of violations of human rights related to abortion in other countries that have been heard and adjudicated by a range o

Simultaneous hydatid cysts of both the right atrium and right ventricle.

Hydatid disease in both chambers of the heart is very rare. Mobile right atrial and right ventricular hydatid cysts were diagnosed incidentally in the etiologic work up for a transient ischemic attack in a 77-year-old man with a history of a hepatic hydatid cyst operation. Transthoracic echocardiography was very successful in the diagnosis of both hydatid cysts. Transesophagial echocardiography and computed tomography confirmed the diagnosis. Both right atrial and right ventricular hydatid cysts were removed under cardiopulmonary bypass to prevent morbidities and potentially fatal complication

Cadaveric analysis of surgical techniques and working space for retroperitoneal tumors as model for improving resection of neuroblastoma.

PURPOSE: Neuroblastoma, the most common extracranial solid tumor in children under 5 years, often surrounds visceral arteries. This study aimed to analyze the working space provided by standardized surgical techniques at key arterial landmarks in adult cadavers. METHODS: We assessed in eight adult cadavers the mobilization of the left colon, spleen and pancreas, right colon, duodenum and mesenteric root, access to the bursa omentalis. The average working space score (AWSS) was evaluated at the left and right renal artery, left and right side of the coeliac trunk, superior mesenteric and commo

PFO Closure after Pulmonary Valve Intervention in Patients with Hypoxemia Due to Right-to-Left Intracardiac Shunt.

Four patients with pulmonary valve (PV) disease and patent foramen ovale (PFO) presented with dyspnea on exertion. Work-up revealed hypoxemia secondary to right-to-left intracardiac shunt. We demonstrate that correction of the primary culprit right heart overload lesion via PV replacement enabled safe PFO repair and resolution of hypoxemia.

Ergonomic design and training for preventing work-related musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limb and neck in adults.

BACKGROUND: Work-related upper limb and neck musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are one of the most common occupational disorders around the world. Although ergonomic design and training are likely to reduce the risk of workers developing work-related upper limb and neck MSDs, the evidence is unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of workplace ergonomic design or training interventions, or both, for the prevention of work-related upper limb and neck MSDs in adults. SEARCH METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), CINAHL, AMED, Web o

Working memory in action: Transsaccadic working memory deficits in the left visual field and after transcallosal remapping.

Every waking second, we make three saccadic eye movements that move our retinal images. Thus, to attain a coherent image of the world we need to remember visuo-spatial information across saccades. But transsaccadic working memory (tWM) remains poorly understood. Crucially, there has been a debate whether there are any differences in tWM for the left vs. right visual field and depending on saccade direction. However, previous studies have probed tWM with minimal loads whereas spatial differences might arise with higher loads. Here we employed a task that probed higher memory load for spatial in

Quantifying work load in neck, shoulders and wrists in female dentists.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the work load in neck and upper limbs of dentists. METHODS: Twelve right-handed female dentists (six with and six without a history of definite neck/shoulder disorders, pair-wise matched for age) were studied when performing authentic dental work. Electromyography (EMG) was used to quantify the muscular load of the shoulders bilaterally and of the right forearm. Positions and movements of the head and wrists were measured, using inclinometers and electrogoniometers. RESULTS: During work, the median load for the right upper trapezium muscle was 8.4% of the maximal volunta

Functional connectivity changes between parietal and prefrontal cortices in primary insomnia patients: evidence from resting-state fMRI.

BACKGROUND: Primary insomnia can severely impair daytime function by disrupting attention and working memory and imposes a danger to self and others by increasing the risk of accidents. We speculated that the neurobiological changes impeding working memory in primary insomnia patients would be revealed by resting-state functional MRI (R-fMRI), which estimates the strength of cortical pathways by measuring local and regional correlations in blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signs independent of specific task demands. METHODS: We compared the R-fMRI activity patterns of 15 healthy controls to

Improved computational fronto-central sleep depth parameters show differences between apnea patients and control subjects.

All-night EEG recordings from 12 male apnea patients and 12 age-matched healthy control subjects were studied in the present work. The spectral mean frequency was used to provide computational sleep depth curves from two frontopolar and two central EEG channels. Our previously presented computational parameters quantifying the properties of the sleep depth curves were improved. The resulting light sleep percentage (LS%) values were higher in apnea patients than in control subjects in the right central brain position (P = 0.028), in concordance to our previous work. Moreover, apnea patients sho
