Parasite-infected sticklebacks increase the risk-taking behaviour of uninfected group members.

Trophically transmitted parasites frequently increase their hosts' risk-taking behaviour, to facilitate transmission to the next host. Whether such elevated risk-taking can spill over to uninfected group members is, however, unknown. To investigate this, we confronted groups of 6 three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, containing 0, 2, 4 or 6 experimentally infected individuals with a simulated bird attack and studied their risk-taking behaviour. As a parasite, we used the tapeworm Schistocephalus solidus, which increases the risk-taking of infected sticklebacks, to facilitate trans

Early-onset Conduct Problems: Predictions from daring temperament and risk taking behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Given its considerable public health significance, identifying predictors of early expressions of conduct problems is a priority. We examined the predictive validity of daring, a key dimension of temperament, and the Balloon Analog Risk Task (BART), a laboratory-based measure of risk taking behavior, with respect to two-year change in parent, teacher-, and youth self-reported oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), and antisocial behavior. METHOD: At baseline, 150 ethnically diverse 6- to 10-year old (M=7.8, SD=1.1; 69.3% male) youth with (n=82) and without (n=6

Risk-Taking Behavior and Suicidality: The Unique Role of Adolescent Drug Use.

Research has supported an association between suicidal thoughts/behaviors and risk taking, which may be particularly strong during adolescence when risk taking is known to increase. However, extant research has focused on individual risk-taking behaviors (e.g., alcohol use), limiting our ability to evaluate the unique association between different risk-taking behaviors and suicidal thoughts/behaviors. The current study aimed to fill this gap by examining the simultaneous influence of multiple risk-taking behaviors (i.e., risky sexual behavior, tobacco/alcohol use, illicit drug use, delinquent

Who are those "risk-taking adolescents"? Individual differences in developmental neuroimaging research.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has illuminated the development of human brain function. Some of this work in typically-developing youth has ostensibly captured neural underpinnings of adolescent behavior which is characterized by risk-seeking propensity, according to psychometric questionnaires and a wealth of anecdote. Notably, cross-sectional comparisons have revealed age-dependent differences between adolescents and other age groups in regional brain responsiveness to prospective or experienced rewards (usually greater in adolescents) or penalties (usually diminished in adoles

Excessive alcohol consumption increases risk taking behaviour in travellers to Cusco, Peru.

The risks associated with alcohol intoxication are rarely discussed during pre-travel counselling. However, alcohol immoderation abroad may increase the exposure to health risks. Few studies have addressed alcohol consumption and risk taking behaviour in travellers to South America. From October to December of 2004, travellers leaving the city of Cusco in Peru were asked to fill out anonymous questionnaires regarding demographics, self-reported alcohol consumption, illness and risk behaviour for sexually-transmitted infection (STI) and travellers diarrhoea. Most travellers (87.2%) consumed alc

Tonic activity level in the right prefrontal cortex predicts individuals' risk taking.

Human risk taking is characterized by a large amount of individual heterogeneity. In this study, we applied resting-state electroencephalography, which captures stable individual differences in neural activity, before subjects performed a risk-taking task. Using a source-localization technique, we found that the baseline cortical activity in the right prefrontal cortex predicts individual risk-taking behavior. Individuals with higher baseline cortical activity in this brain area display more risk aversion than do other individuals. This finding demonstrates that neural characteristics that are

Risk of hyperkalemia in women taking ethinylestradiol/drospirenone and other oral contraceptives.

BACKGROUND: The oral contraceptive ethinyl estradiol 0.03 mg/drospirenone 3 mg (EE/DRSP) contains a progestin component that possesses potassium-sparing diuretic activity similar to spironolactone. We sought to determine whether EE/DRSP use might lead to adverse effects possibly attributable to hyperkalemia. STUDY DESIGN: This was a matched cohort study in which we identified oral contraceptive (OC) initiators between July 2001 and June 2004 within a large, US health plan. We matched EE/DRSP initiators to other OC initiators in a 1:2 ratio on the basis of a prediction model (propensity score)

Risk of thromboembolism in women taking ethinylestradiol/drospirenone and other oral contraceptives.

OBJECTIVE: The oral contraceptive ethinylestradiol 0.03 mg/drospirenone 3 mg contains a progestin component that differs from other oral contraceptives. Case reports and prescription event monitoring suggested that ethinylestradiol/drospirenone might be associated with an elevated risk of thromboembolism. We sought to estimate the association between ethinylestradiol/drospirenone and risk of thromboembolism relative to the association among other oral contraceptives. METHODS: We identified ethinylestradiol/drospirenone initiators and a twofold larger group of other oral contraceptive initiato

Risk-Taking, Social Support, and Belongingness Contribute to the Risk for Cannabis Use Frequency in University Students.

Background: Cannabis use and misuse is known to be associated with a variety of negative health, academic, and work-related outcomes; therefore, it is important to study the factors that contribute to or moderate its use. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine whether risky behavior, belongingness and social support as clustering variables play a role in cannabis use frequency. Method: In a university student sample, participant data on risky behavior, belongingness and social support were used to generate vulnerability profiles through cluster analysis (low vulnerability with low

Explaining the paradoxical effects of poverty on risk taking: The Desperation Threshold Model.

The impacts of poverty and material scarcity on human decision making appear paradoxical. One set of findings associates poverty with risk aversion, whilst another set associates it with risk taking. We present an idealised rational-choice model, the Desperation Threshold Model (DTM), that explains how both these accounts can be correct. The DTM assumes that there are basic needs whose satisfaction is not fully divisible. This generates an S-shaped utility function for material resources. The value of gaining a dollar is at first small (because even with the extra dollar, basic needs still can

Pornography use and its association with risk taking sexual behaviours among Irish adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Online pornography is increasingly accessible to European teenagers due to the proliferation of mobile phone ownership. This raises concerns regarding the influence that pornography may have on adolescent sexual health behaviours. This study examines the association between pornography use and potential risk-taking sexual behaviour among adolescents in the West of Ireland. STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study design, comprising secondary data analysis of the third Planet Youth Survey in the West of Ireland carried out in November 2022 and based on the international Planet

A Case of Severe Hypercalcemia in a Patient Taking Tirzepatide: Potential Risk Factors.

Hypercalcemia is commonly caused by hyperparathyroidism and malignancy. Medication-induced hypercalcemia is less common. Tirzepatide is a dual glucagon-like peptide-1/glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor agonist (GLP-1/GIP RA) used to aid weight loss and glycemic control. It is associated with gastrointestinal side effects, but its effect on calcium homeostasis has not been well reported. We report the case of a 75-year-old woman with a history of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity, chronic kidney disease, and post-surgical hypothyroidism and hypoparathyroidism, who presen

The thalamus network seems responsible for the depression and anxiety affecting risk-taking.

Risk-taking refers to making decisions in risky situations that involve both high risk and high payoff. Previous studies have found that depressed and anxious individuals often exhibit impaired function in risk-taking. However, the neural mechanisms responsible for how depression and anxiety affect individuals' risk-taking are still unknown. Using a sample of 245 participants, functional and structural brain scanning using a 3T MRI machine was performed, along with the depression anxiety stress scale (DASS) test, as well as the balloon analog risk task (BART) test. The results showed that depr

Neural signatures of risk-taking adaptions across health, bipolar disorder, and lithium treatment.

Cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying bipolar disorder (BD) and its treatment are still poorly understood. Here we examined the role of adaptations in risk-taking using a reward-guided decision-making task. We recruited volunteers with high (n = 40) scores on the Mood Disorder Questionnaire, MDQ, suspected of high risk for bipolar disorder and those with low-risk scores (n = 37). We also recruited patients diagnosed with BD who were assigned (randomized, double-blind) to six weeks of lithium (n = 19) or placebo (n = 16) after a two-week baseline period (n = 22 for FMRI). Participants comp

Risk-taking and self-harm behaviors as markers of adolescent borderline personality disorder.

Adolescence is a critical period for early identification and intervention of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Risk-taking and self-harm behaviors (RSB) have been identified as promising early markers of BPD and correlates of depression in school-based samples. The present study aimed, first, to examine the association between RSB and BPD in a clinical sample of adolescents and, second, to examine whether RSB are also linked to depression. N = 405 participants (82.7% female) were recruited from an outpatient clinic for adolescents with RSB. RSB assessed included truancy, excessive media

Infection risk and management strategies for patients with cirrhosis taking proton pump inhibitors.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this review is to discuss infectious disease-related adverse effects associated with long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy in patients with cirrhosis and to provide recommendations for appropriate use and choice of PPI when such therapy is indicated. SUMMARY: Long-term PPI therapy in patients with cirrhosis increases the risk of infections, with infections in turn increasing the risk of mortality in this patient population. Expert recommendations include restricting long-term PPI use in cirrhosis to patients with appropriate gastrointestinal indications, using
