Risperidone induced weight gain leading to benign intracranial hypertension.

Benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) is a condition which is strongly associated with weight gain. A well-known potential adverse effect of anti-psychotic treatment, especially the atypical group, is weight gain. Our case describes the use of risperidone in a young obese lady who gained significant weight after commencing the antipsychotic and later developed headache and blurred vision. Withdrawing the offending drug (causing reduction in her weight) in addition to acetazolamide drastically improved her symptoms within a month. Our case highlights that, obese patients started on antipsychot

Explicit review of risperidone long-acting injection prescribing practice.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics are recommended for those people with a preference for this form of treatment and those who experience negative outcomes due to non-adherence with oral medication. LAI antipsychotics have been associated with improved outcomes and lower treatment discontinuation rates when compared with oral formulations. Risperidone long-acting injection (RLAI) treatment is effective and well-tolerated in clinical trials. The aim of this study was to review RLAI prescribing practice and compare prescribing to best practice recommendation

Risperidone in cocaine-dependent patients with comorbid psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: : A high percentage of individuals with cocaine dependence have a comorbid psychiatric illness, which complicates treatment of the substance abuse. This report will describe clinical experience using risperidone in cocaine-dependent patients with psychiatric disorders. METHOD: : Sixteen male patients with cocaine dependence and comorbid psychiatric disorder (DSM-III-R) diagnoses, who were admitted to a voluntary, post-detoxification, intermediate-care inpatient substance abuse program, were started on risperidone (mean starting dose 2.3 mg/day) in an open-label, naturalistic trial

Haloperidol versus risperidone on rat "early onset" vacuous chewing.

Similarly to acute rat catalepsy, "early onset" vacuous chewing movements (VCMs) induced by subchronic treatment with antipsychotic have recently been proposed as a model of human extrapyramidal symptoms. In the present study, the propensities of haloperidol and risperidone in inducing rat "early onset" VCMs were compared using doses of the two antipsychotics that acutely induce similar catalepsy. Comparable rat catalepsy states were observed when the effects produced by 0.1, 0.5, and 1mg/kg of haloperidol were compared with those induced by 1, 4, and 10mg/kg of risperidone, respectively. Thes

Risperidone-responsive segmental dystonia and pallidal deep brain stimulation.

A 67-year-old man with risperidone-responsive segmental dystonia underwent bilateral deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globus pallidus internus. Prospectively, the authors assessed the Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale in medication (M) and stimulation (S) "on"/"off" states. With DBS at 9 months, the score improved by 86% to 8.5 in M-"on"/S-"on" and 12.5 in M-"off"/S-"on." Studies of the effects of DBS and concomitant medication may be warranted in selected patients treated by DBS for dystonia.

Risperidone monotherapy in preschool children with pervasive developmental disorders.

The aim of this preliminary study was to examine the short-term efficacy and safety of the atypical antipsychotic risperidone in preschool autistic children. The sample consisted of 10 subjects (7 males and 3 females) aged 3 9/12 to 6 6/12 years (mean age 4.7 years). A 16-week open-label trial with risperidone monotherapy was initiated at a starting dose of 0.25 mg daily and was increased to a maximum dose of 0.50 mg (0.027 mg/kg daily). Outcome measures were the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, the Children's Psychiatric Rating Scale, Clinical Global Impression (improvement score), and the Chil

Risperidone (Risperdal): clinical experience with a new antipsychosis drug.

Risperidone (Risperdal) is a benzisoxazole derivative with a high affinity for serotonin 5-HT2 and dopamine D2 receptors, and some affinity for alpha- adrenergic, histamine H1 and dopamine D1 receptors. It has no anticholinergic effects. Early studies demonstrated risperidone to be an effective medication for psychotic symptoms, probably more so than the older neuroleptics for both positive and negative symptoms. At clinically effective doses, risperidone causes no more extrapyramidal side-effects (EPS) than placebo; at higher doses EPS frequency increases in a dose-dependent manner. Since it

Reemergence of positive symptoms after initial response to risperidone.

Risperidone was effective in successfully treating a patient's negative symptoms of schizophrenia as well as reducing adverse effects from typical antipsychotic drugs. Auditory hallucinations reemerged after 8 months, however, and again after 24 months of risperidone therapy. Reemergence of psychotic symptoms after initial response might be explained by inadequate dosage, by the natural course of the patient's schizophrenia independent of drug therapy, or by the possibility that, for this patient, risperidone was less effective than chlorpromazine for the positive symptom of auditory hallucina

Priapism Associated With the Addition of Hydroxyzine to Risperidone: A Case Report.

Background: Hydroxyzine hydrochloride is a piperazine derivative antihistamine that is used in the treatment of anxiety. Its tendency to cause somnolence makes it an attractive option for patients with anxiety-induced insomnia. Despite its antihistamine activity, hydroxyzine is noted to have alpha-adrenergic antagonism activity. Other alpha-adrenergic inhibitors have been implicated in medication-induced priapism, including risperidone. Risperidone is a second-generation antipsychotic that primarily blocks serotonin and dopamine receptors, while also inhibiting alpha-1 and alpha-2 receptors wi

Effectiveness of different dosing regimens of risperidone and olanzapine in schizophrenia.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of once- versus twice-daily dosing of risperidone and olanzapine on clinical outcomes in patients with schizophrenia. Data from phase 1 of the Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE) schizophrenia study were used. Patients with schizophrenia were randomly allocated to treatment with risperidone and olanzapine, and were also randomly assigned to once-daily (N=173 and 169, respectively) or twice-daily (N=168 and 167, respectively) dosing and followed for up to 18 months. Comparative teratogenicity analysis of valnoctamide, risperidone, and olanzapine in mice.

OBJECTIVES: Based on the recent findings from animal studies, it has been proposed that the therapeutic use of valnoctamide, an anxiolytic drug developed in the early 1960s, be extended to treat other neurological disorders such as epilepsy and bipolar disease. Given the scarcity of adequate data on its prenatal toxicity, a comparative teratogenicity study of valnoctamide and two of the most commonly used drugs to treat bipolar disorder, risperidone and olanzapine, was carried out in a mouse model system. METHODS: Pregnant dams were treated with the aforementioned three drugs at the dose leve

Catatonia and mania in patient with AIDS: treatment with lorazepam and risperidone.

A 30-year-old woman presented with psychiatric symptoms and was found to be HIV positive prior to admission to the hospital. We present the first case report of catatonia and mania in an HIV-positive subject unrelated to infectious processes. The catatonic symptoms were alleviated by intravenous lorazepam, and manic symptoms were adequately treated with risperidone. Clinicians need to be aware that HIV infection should be considered in all patients with new-onset mania alternating with catatonia or in those with HIV risk factors.
