Restrictions on second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) in the United States, which were partially implemented in 2011, prohibit the sale of SGAR products through general consumer outlets to minimize use by non-professional or non-agricultural applicators. This study analyzed liver tissue from four species of birds of prey admitted to a wildlife clinic in Massachusetts, USA, from 2012-2016 for residues of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). Ninety-four birds were analyzed; 16 were symptomatic for AR toxicosis, and 78 asymptomatic. Ninety-six percent of all birds tested were positive

Second-generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (ARs) can be critical for carnivores, due to their widespread use and impacts. However, although many studies explored the impacts of ARs on small and mesocarnivores, none assessed the extent to which they could contaminate large carnivores in anthropized landscapes. We filled this gap by exploring spatiotemporal trends in grey wolf (Canis lupus) exposure to ARs in central and northern Italy, by subjecting a large sample of dead wolves (n = 186) to the LC-MS/MS method. Most wolves (n = 115/186, 61.8 %) tested positive for ARs (1 compound, n = 36; 2

In the original version of this article, there is a typographical error in the third sentence of the Results and Discussion section. The number of cases in which anticoagulant-facilitated hemorrhage was considered the cause of death was 19 (not 9). This has been corrected with this erratum.

Superwarfarins are long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides developed from warfarin. The mechanism of action is by inhibition of vitamin K epoxide reductase, resulting in the inability of the body to recycle vitamin K. Deficiency of vitamin K thereafter leads to inability for the body to synthesise vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors, factor II, VII, IX, and X, leading to prolonged prothrombin time. Due to the bulky aromatic sidechains, superwarfarins have a much longer half-life when compared to warfarin, and exposure to superwarfarins results in a prolonged period of anticoagulation which

The occurrence of 10 commonly used anticoagulant rodenticides in centrifuged sludge of 27 wastewater treatment plants was evaluated using solid-liquid extraction (SLE) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Activated carbon, alumina, and Florisil cartridges with methanol/dichloromethane as eluting solvents were tested in combination with primary-secondary amine (PSA) to optimize an efficient sample cleanup. PSA in combination with Florisil was the best methodology to extract anticoagulant rodenticides in sludge providing recoveries between 42 ± 0.5 and 100 ± 2 %. Warfar

BACKGROUND: Tetramine (tetramethylene disulphotetramine, TETS) and fluoroacetamide (FAA) are known as illegal rodenticides with high toxicity to animal species and human beings, which could lead to severe clinical features, including reduction of consciousness, convulsions, coma, and even death.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We presented 2 cases that involved rodenticides poisoning. Even though the patients showed severe manifestations, they were initially misdiagnosed, resulting in 2 persons finally died from TETS and FAA poisoning in homicide cases.
CONCLUSION: From the clinical and forensic experi

A fast analytical method based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was established for the simultaneous determination of tetramine, fluoroacetamide, sodium fluoroacetate, gliftor I and gliftor II in serum. At pH 2.0, sodium fluoroacetate was derivatizated at room temperature for 5 min by using N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine as the derivatization reagent and N, N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide as the catalyst. The derivative and other rodenticides were extracted with ethyl acetate and concentrated with nitrogen at 50 °C, then determined by GC-MS in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode, and

The single dose anticoagulant rodenticide, bromadiolone (0.005%) and the acute rodenticide, zinc phosphide (2%) were evaluated in the paddy fields during Samba and Thaladi seasons for two crop stages, viz. 20 and 40 days after transplantation. Three baiting methods namely, burrow, station and burrow+station were adopted for both rodenticides. Both the rodenticides were exposed for one and two days in the partitioned plots. In the plots with 20 days after transplantation, the two day exposure of both rodenticides in burrow+station baitings during both seasons cleared cent percent rodent populat

The control of rodent pests is a continuing goal of mankind. To this end, a multitude of rodenticides have been produced, each designed to kill rodents by exerting their toxic effects on various body systems. As examples, veterinarians have had to manage companion animal poisonings due to anticoagulant, sodium fluoroacetate (compound 1080), thallium, barium carbonate, and zinc phosphide-based rodenticides. Many of these rodenticides were introduced because of their anticipated safety in relation to nontarget species; unfortunately, this has not been the case. Veterinarians must attempt to iden

Methanol is highly toxic to humans. Although methanol poisoning is not uncommon in developing countries, poisoning caused by ingestion of commercial products containing undeclared methanol has rarely been reported. Herein, we describe two patients who experienced methanol poisoning after ingestion of liquid rodenticides. A 39-year-old woman attempted suicide by ingesting liquid rodenticide which contained bromadiolone. She developed high anion gap metabolic acidosis and coagulopathy. Methanol poisoning was confirmed 20 hours later. She received oral ethanol therapy and hemodialysis. Vitamin K1

A modified QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) extraction was validated for the extraction of seven coumarin anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) and 36 pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) residues in soil samples using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The aim of this work was to develop a method for the monitoring of these compounds in agricultural lands as well as in forensic applications for the determination of ARs poisoning. As far as is known, this is the first time that a QuEChERS-based method is used for the extraction of ARs in soil, as

This paper presents a fully validated method for the qualitative identification of bromadiolone, brodifacoum, coumachlor, coumatetralyl, difenacoum and warfarin in whole blood specimens. Samples are protein precipitated with acetonitrile, processed via solid-phase extraction and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with high resolution tandem mass spectrometric detection. Limits of detection were 10 ng/mL or better for all analytes.

Anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) levels were studied in liver of 401 wild and domestic animals found dead in Spain with evidences of AR poisoning, including 2 species of reptiles (n=2), 42 species of birds (n=271) and 18 species of mammals (n=128). Baits (n=32) were also analyzed to detect the potential use of ARs in their intentional preparation to kill predators. AR residues were detected in 155 (38.7%) of the studied animals and 140 (34.9%) may have died by AR poisoning according to the clinical information, necropsy findings, residue levels and results of other toxicological analysis. Ireland has a restricted small mammal prey guild but still includes species most likely to consume anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) baits. This may enhance secondary exposure of predators to ARs. We compared liver AR residues in foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in Northern Ireland (NI) with those in foxes from Great Britain which has a more diverse prey guild but similar agricultural use of ARs. Liver ARs were detected in 84% of NI foxes, more than in a comparable sample of foxes from Scotland and similar to that of suspected AR poisoned animals from England and Wales. High exposure in NI foxes is probably

We conducted a systematic search of the literature to identify publications on the safety of exposure to Salmonella-based rodenticides by humans and animals. We included full-text publications that described the methods and presented their results satisfactorily. Of 545 publications retrieved, 47 were reviewed in full text and from those 12 were selected. Six reports featured cases of salmonellosis in humans, with fatal cases, associated with exposure to previous versions of this type of rodenticide. A clinical trial reported an increased frequency of diarrhea and fever in the group that inges

The story of how World War II stimulated the development of DDT, and the ensuing postwar dependence on such chemical insecticides, is well known. However, less recognition has been given to the wartime efforts to synthesize new rodenticides to fight rat-borne epidemics. Baltimore, Maryland served as the site for field tests of the powerful new compound alpha naphthyl thiourea (ANTU) from 1942-1946. This experimental campaign sparked debates over the efficacy of controlling rats via chemical warfare instead of environmental sanitation, which led to the ironic conclusion that urban rat control d

The efficacy of seven rodenticides for use against Sigmodon hispidus was investigated in the laboratory. The poisons (warfarin, coumatetralyl, difenacoum, brodifacoum, bromadiolone, calciferol and zinc phosphide) were all toxic at the concentrations normally used against Rattus rattus and R. norvegicus and all were palatable. Trials are now needed to confirm the efficacy of these poisons in the field, but it seems likely that, if used in suitable bait formulations, they would all be useful for the practical control of S. hispidus.

The brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) is considered a pest and the use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) has been considered a valuable method for their management. ARs inhibit the enzyme vitamin K 2,3-epoxide reductase complex subunit 1 (VKORC1), preventing activation of coagulation factors and provoking death by internal bleeding. Resistance to ARs is associated to Vkorc1 gene mutations. In the present study, we aim to characterize the incidence of mutations in Madrid downtown by using a novel sampling approach, based on a systematic procedure. Madrid central core (approx. 42 km2) was divided

BACKGROUND: Management of severe anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning relies mainly on vitamin K1 (VK1) therapy, which often requires prolonged administration when long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides (LAARs) are involved.
KEY CLINICAL QUESTION: Can a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) be safely reintroduced in a patient at high risk of thrombosis recurrence whose LAAR poisoning is being managed with prolonged VK1 therapy?
CLINICAL APPROACH: We report the case of a patient receiving rivaroxaban for recurrent thrombosis who ingested massive amounts of brodifacoum, difenacoum, and difethialone
