Information and patient participation in screening for prostate cancer.

The purpose of this study was to determine if providing men with information about screening for prostate cancer would enable them to assume a more active role in decision making with their family physician, and lower levels of anxiety and decisional conflict. Men were recruited from one family medical clinic in Winnipeg, Manitoba. One hundred men scheduled for a periodic health examination (PHE) were randomly assigned to receive verbal and written information either prior to the PHE, or following the second interview. Men completed measures of preferred decisional role and anxiety prior to th

Patient mistreatment, emotional exhaustion and work-family conflict among nurses: a moderated mediation model of social sharing of negative work events and perceived organizational support.

BACKGROUND: Nursing literature suggested that patient mistreatment has significant impacts on nurses' emotions and job burnout. Yet, further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanism and the spillover effect on nurses' families. Leveraging the goal progress theory, this study aimed to examine the association between patient mistreatment, nurses' emotional exhaustion, and work-family conflict, as well as the mediating role of social sharing of negative work events and the moderating role of perceived organizational support. METHODS: During the COVID-19 pandemic in China, a cros

Co-Occurring Social Reward and Social Threat Elicits Conflict-Related Neural Activation.

Facial expressions often exhibit variations in social reward (happiness), social threat (anger), or social reward-threat conflict (co-occurring happiness and anger) and previous research demonstrates that core approach and avoidance motivation systems are highly sensitive to these variations. Moreover, social reward-threat conflict distinctly modulates approach and avoidance motivation compared to isolated variations in social reward or social threat, which plays a particularly pronounced role in social behavior. However, no neuroimaging research has elucidated the extent to which social rewar

Bidirectional Associations between Youth Adjustment and Mothers' and Fathers' Coparenting Conflict.

Research demonstrates significant associations between coparenting conflict and child adjustment problems. However, the implications of youth adjustment for coparenting, especially during youth's adolescence, remain poorly understood. Addressing several gaps in the literature, this study examines the longitudinal trajectory of mothers' and fathers' reported coparenting conflict from youth ages 10-17 and tests bidirectional associations between youth social anxiety, hostility, risk-taking behaviors, and mothers' and fathers' coparenting conflict. Participants include 757 mothers, fathers, and y

Depressive symptoms among migrant Chinese grandparents and intergenerational family conflict: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Amid China's rapid urbanization and demographic aging, the population of migrant grandparents who relocate to cities to provide intergenerational care has been steadily expanding. This group is particularly vulnerable to depressive symptoms due to the accumulation of multiple stressors, and they face an elevated risk of intergenerational family conflict. This study aims to examine the relationship between depression among migrant grandparents and intergenerational conflict within families, with a particular focus on the mediating role of hostile attribution bias and the moderating

Overt and covert parental conflict and adolescent problems: observed marital interaction in clinic and nonclinic families.

When adolescents behave in socially unacceptable ways, overt interparental conflict is widely held to be the cause. Empirical studies, however, have been inconsistent in supporting this assumption. Some researchers therefore have speculated that covert conflict also plays a role. In the current observational study, evidence was found that both overt parental conflict and some forms of covert conflict play roles. During problem-solving family discussions, parents of adolescents whom they had brought into an outpatient clinic for treatment overtly disagreed with each other significantly more oft

An epidemiological study of ADHD and conduct disorder: does family conflict moderate the association?

PURPOSE: To examine the role of family conflict in the relationship between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD). METHODS: A cross-sectional national population survey was carried out among 10,838 14-16 year old students in all secondary schools in Iceland. Three latent measures, financial status, ADHD and CD, and one observed measure, family structure, were included in the study. A structural equation model was used to evaluate direct effects between ADHD and CD for four different groups; females and males, experiencing family conflict and those not exper

Factors influencing role preferences in decision-making of healthy women with BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants: subanalysis from a randomised controlled decision coaching trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients who actively engage in their medical decision-making processes can experience better health outcomes. This exploratory study aimed to identify predictors of preferred and actual roles in decision-making in healthy women with BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants (PVs). METHODS: Women with BRCA1/2 PVs without a history of breast and/or ovarian cancer were recruited in six centres across Germany. Those returning the baseline questionnaires (T1) were randomly assigned to the intervention or control group (IG, CG). The IG completed a decision-coaching (DC) programme, the CG received st

Pharmacists on the frontline: Medication misuse and abuse during violent conflict in four MENA countries.

PURPOSE: An important, yet under-researched, impact of violent conflict on public health is the susceptibility of populations in conflicts to drug abuse and misuse as increased stress, the easy availability of drugs, and the relaxation of taboos against drug use exacerbate the problem. This study explores the experiences of pharmacists regarding drug misuse and abuse in four conflict-affected MENA countries. METHODS: The study is part of a larger two-year (2021-2023) project investigating the impact of violent conflict in the MENA region on medicine abuse and misuse and the experiences of pha
