This report describes a significant bone regeneration in a mandibular molar with advancing long-standing periodontal disease (defect extending to apex and into furcation) following a single episode of scaling and root planing. A 52-year-old female suffered from generalized moderate periodontitis for two years. An acute periodontal abscess with a 12 mm probing depth around the right mandibular first molar was noted. After incision and drainage, thorough scaling and root planing was performed under local anaesthesia. Three months later, radiographic examination showed complete bone regeneration

Manual calculus debridement through scaling accounts for a significant proportion of hygienist efforts in dental and periodontal practices. Despite this, little is quantitatively known concerning the effects of instruments, technique and treatments on debridement (scaling) efficiency or efficacy. The total work effort expended by therapists in calculus debridement results from the sum of the efforts associated with each scaling stroke. Each scaling stroke, in turn, is affected by a variety of physical forces, including those in the control of the therapist and those intrinsic to the calculus s

Mandibular incisors were extracted and allowed to dry in air for 45 min. They were then root-planed extensively, leaving a cervical collar and the apical region uninstrumented, to prevent direct contact between root surface and alveolar bone after replantation while, at the same time, enabling precise and stable reseating of the tooth. Control teeth were replanted either without further treatment or after treatment with citric acid for 3 min. Experimental teeth were treated before replantation with 1% SnF2 for 5 min, 1% tetracycline HCl for 5 min, or 1% SnF2 followed by 1% tetracycline. Histom

BACKGROUND: Gingivitis is a common plaque-induced inflammatory periodontal disease that may progress to periodontitis if left untreated. Adjunctive topical antimicrobial agents may improve the effectiveness of conventional periodontal therapy.
METHODS: This randomized controlled clinical trial included 120 participants with gingivitis or Stage I, Grade A periodontitis. Participants were randomly allocated to three groups: Group A received scaling and root planing (SRP) with placebo gel; Group B received SRP with 1% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) gel (CHX group); and Group C received SRP with a

INTRODUCTION: An important and non-adapted delivered energy of Er:YAG laser can eliminate the total thickness of root cementum during root planing. Conversely, the preservation of a partial layer of cementum covering the roots is vital for any periodontal ligament regeneration. Thus, the assessment of the cementum ablation depth produced by each energy density of Er:YAG laser is essential before considering its use for the periodontal planing and treatment of the cementum and root surfaces.
AIM OF THE STUDY: Assessment of the cementum ablation depth at different energy densities of the Er:YAG

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of metformin as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Electronic searches were conducted in databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register databases) up to August 2017. Randomized clinical trials with data in comparison between adjunctive locally delivered metformin use to SRP and placebo in each group and a follow-up period of at least 6 months, were included. Primary outcomes included clinical attachment level, while secondary

BACKGROUND: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the authors evaluated the pain during scaling and root planing with use of topical anesthetic versus that with the use of injected anesthetic in adult patients.
TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors searched 6 databases for randomized clinical trials in which the investigators compared the clinical effectiveness of intrapocket and injectable anesthetics. The primary outcome was the risk of developing pain or intensity of pain. Quality assessment followed the guidelines from the Cochrane Collaboration's risk-of-bias tool. The authors pe

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the efficacy of a probiotic, Saccharomyces boulardii (S. boulardii), mixed with a prebiotic, fructooligosaccharide (FOS), in the treatment of periodontal disease when used as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT).
METHODS: The study was carried out on 30 subjects who were diagnosed as having chronic periodontitis and had at least two sites in two different quadrants with ≥ 5 mm probing pocket depth (PPD). Two sites in each subject were randomly selected: in control sites, scaling and root planing (SRP) was performed, while the study si

AIM: Chronic periodontal disease (CPD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) share common pathogenic pathways involving the cytokine network resulting in increased susceptibility to both diseases, leading to increased inflammatory destruction, insulin resistance, and poor glycemic control. Periodontal treatment may improve glycemic control. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of scaling and root planing (SRP) of T2DM patients with CPD on hyperglycemia and the levels of serum interleukin-10 (IL-10).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five subjects were divided into three groups comprising

BACKGROUND: Subantimicrobial-dose doxycycline (SDD) is widely used as an adjunctive treatment to scaling and root planing (SRP), but its long-term effectiveness remains controversial. The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the actual evidence of the effectiveness of SRP + SDD compared to SRP + placebo in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.
METHODS: A literature search of electronic databases was performed for articles published through November 1, 2010. Several dental journals were screened during the manual search, and authors were contacted for missing information. The syst

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the influence of topical metronidazole gel application and scaling and root planing on gingival crevicular fluid variables.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: In a split-mouth study, 39 volunteers with chronic periodontitis were treated by metronidazole gel or scaling and root planing. Clinical attachment level and probing depth were recorded, and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and total/transformed Alpha2-macroglobulin were determined in the gingival crevicular fluid at baseline, as well as after 3 and 6 months.
RESULTS: Both treatment procedures resulte

Periodontitis constitutes the primary cause of tooth loss among adults in China. The disease is characterized by the high morbidity, which significantly impairs both oral and systemic health. As the key insights of initial periodontal therapy, subgingival scaling and root planing (SRP) have been considered as simple, effective, and cost-efficient treatment approaches for managing periodontal inflammation. Substantial published evidences indicated that the majority of patients diagnosed with periodontitis could achieve lifelong retention of their natural teeth through standardized initial perio

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is a host-mediated inflammation caused due to microbial challenge. Hence, mechanisms involving the control of host-associated mediators can be a potential target. The conventional nonsurgical periodontal treatment modality includes scaling and root planing (SRP), which is often combined with adjunctive chemical plaque control agents for effective disease control. Chlorhexidine (CHX) is the most common chemical plaque control agent used. Recent research is now being focused on exploring other medicinal substitutes that may benefit control of inflammation and tiss

The aim of this split-mouth, randomized controlled clinical trial was to evaluate the efficacy of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in treatment of chronic periodontitis. Each quadrant was categorized into control group (SRP alone; two quadrants per patient), test group 1 (SRP + PDT), and test group 2 (SRP + LLLT. The test groups showed significantly higher reductions in Gingival Index, probing depth, and clinical attachment level as well as reductions in Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomita
