A current problem in candidiasis treatment is increasing resistance to azoles, which are often prescribed to patients. The study underlines the high resistance of yeasts to fluconazole, which achieved high MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) values both alone and in combination with essential oils (EOs). Antifungal activity of Hyssopus officinalis, Thymus vulgaris, Salvia officinalis and Rosmarinus officinalis EOs was determined against 13 clinical isolates of Candida albicans and reference strain Candida albicans ATCC 10231. The synergistic effect was investigated for the combination of it

Ochratoxin A (OTA) in dry-cured sausages should be controlled to reduce consumer exposure. The use of microorganisms and plants has been proposed as the most promising strategy to diminish OTA accumulation in them. The ability of Debaryomyces hansenii (Dh) and rosemary-based treatments to control the OTA contamination due to the co-occurrence of Penicillium nordicum and Aspergillus westerdijkiae in "chorizo" and "salchichón" was assessed. OTA accumulation on the surface was generally higher in "salchichón" than in "chorizo", with the highest OTA reduction being achieved in the first matrix. Sp

In this work, the green and sustainable synthesis of CuO-Fe2O3 and CuO-Fe2O3@Chitin nanocomposites is described, using the extract of Rosmarinus officinalis as a bioreductant and chitin, a natural, non-toxic stabilizing biopolymer. UV-Vis spectroscopy indicated two absorption peaks with redshift and bandgap narrowing from 2.71 to 2.61 eV upon chitin incorporation, indicating enhanced electronic coupling and visible-light absorption. TEM and SEM images indicated that chitin inhibited the aggregation, and hence, the uniformly dispersed CuO-Fe2O3 NPs were obtained within the biopolymer matrix. Th

Lipid mediators (LM), formed from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) through cyclooxygenase- and lipoxygenase (LOX)-dependent pathways, contribute to all stages of inflammation and are thus valuable targets for drugs that intervene with inflammatory diseases. Novel pharmacotherapeutic concepts attempt to support LM class-switching from pro-inflammatory 5-LOX-derived leukotrienes and cyclooxygenase-derived prostaglandins towards omega-3-PUFA-based specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPM), which accomplishes resolution of inflammation. INTRODUCTION: Alopecia, a common condition causing hair loss, leads to decreased self-esteem worldwide. Natural extracts such as rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) and capsicum (Capsicum annuum L.), traditionally used for various medicinal purposes in Egypt, are widely utilized in treatments for androgenetic alopecia and hair care products. However, these extracts lack market standardization and clear specifications, leading to inconsistent and unpredictable effects.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the effects of standardized rosemary and capsicum extracts on testosterone-induced

BACKGROUND: Monitoring industrial processes is critical for ensuring consistent product quality, as consumers expect uniformity across different production batches. In the case of herbal extracts, such as rosemary hydroalcoholic extracts, it is essential to control the yield of target compounds to maintain both the expected quality and safety. Typically, these extracts are produced in an extractor and then analyzed separately in a laboratory (offline). By integrating these methods, it is possible to reduce the number of manipulation steps, shorten processing times, and lower solvent and energy

This study aimed to evaluate the antimycotoxigenic effect of essential oils (EOs) obtained from four different aromatic plants on the production of deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEA) by Fusarium graminearum. The EOs from ginger (GEO), turmeric (TEO), thyme (ThEO) and rosemary (REO) were obtained by hydrodistillation and identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The major compounds found were mostly monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicide concentration (MFC) were 11.25, 364, 366 and 11,580 µg mL-1 for ThEO, GEO,

Rosmarinic acid (α-o-caffeoyl-3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid; RA) is a naturally occurring hydroxylated compound commonly found in species of the subfamily Nepetoideae of the Lamiaceae and Boraginaceae, such as Rosmarinus officinalis, Salvia officinalis, and Perilla frutescens. RA is biosynthesized from the amino acids L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosine by eight enzymes that include phenylalanine ammonia lyase and cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase. RA can also be chemically produced by the esterification of caffeic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid. RA and its numerous derivatives containing one o

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti L. is the major vector of dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever. In an effort to find effective tools for control programs to reduce mosquito populations, the authors assessed the acute toxicities of 14 monoterpenoids, trans-anithole and the essential oil of rosemary against different larval stages of Ae. aegypti. The potential for piperonyl butoxide (PBO) to act as a synergist for these compounds to increase larvicidal activity was also examined, and the oviposition response of gravid Ae. aegypti females to substrates containing these compounds was evaluated in b

Rosemary, a plant belonging to the labiate family, is frequently used in the making of cosmetics and also for medicinal purposes. There are few reported cases of contact dermatitis due to this plant. Here we present 1 case and asses the existence of cross-reactivity with plants from the same family. 53-year-old man with several episodes of a pruritic and erythematous eruption that resulted in peeling of the skin, after applying rosemary alcohol, on the chest reported. Epicutaneous tests were done with the standard European series (GEIDC), with the commercial plant series (Bial-Aristegui) and w

Essential oils (EOs) from three Lamiaceae species (Lavandula dentata, Salvia rosmarinus, and Thymus vulgaris) and seven Eucalyptus species (Myrtaceae) were evaluated for yield, chemical composition, antioxidant capacity, and antifungal activity. Oil yields ranged from 0.18% to 3.6%, with L. dentata producing the highest. Chemical composition was determined using gas chromatography, revealing high levels of oxygenated monoterpenes (39.95%-88.31%). The main constituents were 1,8-cineole, α-pinene, β-pinene, p-cymene, and camphor, except for the EO of T. vulgaris, which was dominated by thymol (7

Fractionation of essential oils is technically challenging due to enormous scaffold diversities and structural complexities as well as difficulties in the implementation of the fractionation in the gas phase. Packing beads with multi-dimensional hierarchical nanostructures have been developed herein to pack fractional columns for atmospheric distillations. Activated alumina beads were coated with a porous TiO2 thin film. Growth of Cu-BTC (benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) crystals in resultant porous surfaces leads to the generation of new nanopores and increased metal centers for differential coo

BACKGROUND: Myiasis caused by Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is widely distributed throughout the world and affects both humans and animals. In addition, L. sericata larvae and adults may play a role in spreading causal agents of mycobacterial infections. Therefore, it is important to establish new and safe alternative methods of controlling this blowfly.
METHODS: The insecticidal effectiveness of four commercially available essential oils [lettuce (Lactuca sativa), chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), anise (Pimpinella anisum), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)] against third larval
