"It's very important that you measure throughout that journey…": patient perspectives towards quality-of-life data collection following haematopoietic cell transplant.

BackgroundThere is increasing interest in using Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) to provide evidence of how a haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT) affects blood cancer patients' long-term quality-of-life (QoL). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore patients' opinions on what QoL data should be collected post-transplant, when this data should be collected, the use of this data beyond research, and how this data should be captured.MethodsTwenty-one HCT patients with median age of 45 years (range: 26-71 years) took part in a semi-structured interview. Two commonly use

Developing key performance indicators using routinely collected healthcare data in obstetric patient blood management: A multi-stage consensus study.

BACKGROUND: Patient blood management (PBM) including appropriate red blood cell (RBC) transfusion underpins the management of severe anaemia and haemorrhage during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum. However, there is marked variation in practice despite guidelines and standards. Key performance indicators (KPIs) can identify deviation from agreed standards, support benchmarking and guide efforts to improve outcomes. We aimed to develop a set of obstetric PBM KPIs which may be measured from routinely collected electronic health records. METHODS: We undertook a three-stage process. First, we c

Supervised learning using routine surveillance data improves outbreak detection of Salmonella and Campylobacter infections in Germany.

The early detection of infectious disease outbreaks is a crucial task to protect population health. To this end, public health surveillance systems have been established to systematically collect and analyse infectious disease data. A variety of statistical tools are available, which detect potential outbreaks as abberations from an expected endemic level using these data. Here, we present supervised hidden Markov models for disease outbreak detection, which use reported outbreaks that are routinely collected in the German infectious disease surveillance system and have not been leveraged so f

Hispanic physicians' tobacco intervention practices: a cross-sectional survey study.

BACKGROUND: U.S. Hispanic physicians constitute a considerable professional collective, and they may be most suited to attend to the health education needs of the growing U.S. Hispanic population. These educational needs include tobacco use prevention and smoking cessation. However, there is a lack of information on Hispanic physicians' tobacco intervention practices, their level of awareness and use of cessation protocols, and the type of programs that would best address their tobacco training needs. The purpose of this study was to assess the tobacco intervention practices and training needs

Syndromic surveillance for West Nile virus using raptors in rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Wildlife rehabilitation centers routinely gather health-related data from diverse species. Their capability to signal the occurrence of emerging pathogens and improve traditional surveillance remains largely unexplored. This paper assessed the utility for syndromic surveillance of raptors admitted to The Raptor Center (TRC) to signal circulation of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Minnesota between 1990 and 2014. An exhaustive descriptive analysis using grouping time series structures and models of interrupted times series was conducted for indicator subsets. RESULTS: A total of 13,080 ra

A mixed methods study protocol evaluating early screening, triaging, risk assessment and health optimisation in perioperative pathways.

BACKGROUND: Over 10 million operations are carried out every year in the UK, improving millions of lives. While most operations are low-risk, some result in patients having poor outcomes. Preoperative assessment evaluates a patient's health prior to surgery to identify risks and where possible minimise them through optimisation. However, this preoperative assessment often takes place close to the planned date of surgery, meaning there is little time to optimise patients' health. Early preoperative screening is the process of evaluating a patient's health earlier in the surgical pathway. In 202
