We argue that the well-known beta functions of quadratic gravity do not correspond to the physical dependence of scattering amplitudes on external momenta, and derive the correct physical beta functions. Asymptotic freedom turns out to be compatible with the absence of tachyons.

PURPOSE: Overhead squat assessment (OHSA) is a pre-activity dynamic movement analysis tool used to define deviations from an ideal motion pattern which known as compensation. Compensatory movements may result from abnormality in myofascial activity, length-tension relationships, neuro-motor control strategies, osteokinematics and arthrokinematics. The aim of this study is to identify the association between selected biomechanical variables of the ankle, knee, hip, pelvis, torso during OHSA and 16 km/h treadmill running tasks.
METHODS: Thirteen national long distance male runners (17.3 ± 0.5 a

It has been proposed that humans' exceptional locomotor endurance evolved partly with foraging in hot open habitats and subsequently about 2 million years ago with persistence hunting, for which endurance running was instrumental. However, persistence hunting by walking, if successful, could select for locomotor endurance even before the emergence of any running-related traits in human evolution. Using a heat exchange model validated here in 73 humans and 55 ungulates, we simulated persistence hunts for prey of three sizes (100, 250, and 400 kg) and three sweating capacities (nonsweating, low,

In this overview, we summarize the findings of the literature with regards to physiology and pathophysiology of ultra-marathon running. The number of ultra-marathon races and the number of official finishers considerably increased in the last decades especially due to the increased number of female and age-group runners. A typical ultra-marathoner is male, married, well-educated, and ~45 years old. Female ultra-marathoners account for ~20% of the total number of finishers. Ultra-marathoners are older and have a larger weekly training volume, but run more slowly during training compared to mara

In recent years, there has been a movement toward barefoot and minimalist running. Advocates assert that a lack of cushion and support promotes a forefoot or midfoot strike rather than a rearfoot strike, decreasing the impact transient and stress on the hip and knee. Although the change in gait is theorized to decrease injury risk, this concept has not yet been fully elucidated. However, research has shown diminished symptoms of chronic exertional compartment syndrome and anterior knee pain after a transition to minimalist running. Skeptics are concerned that, because of the effects of the nat

Success has been demonstrated in rehabilitation from certain injuries while using positive-pressure treadmills. However, certain injuries progress even with the lighter vertical loads. Our purpose was to investigate changes in muscle activation for various lower limb muscles while running on a positive-pressure treadmill at different amounts of body weight support. We hypothesized that some muscles would show decreases in activation with greater body weight support while others would not. Eleven collegiate distance runners were recruited. EMG amplitude was measured over 12 lower limb muscles.

The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of the BEX Runner palm cooling device during a combination of exercise and environmental heat stress. Twelve subjects completed two randomly ordered time-to-exhaustion runs at 75% VO2max, 30 °C, and 50% relative humidity with and without palm cooling. Time to exhaustion runs started once the warm-up had elicited a core temperature of 37.5 °C. Heart rate, Rating of Perceived Exertion, Feeling Scale, and core temperature were recorded at 2-min intervals during each run. Time to exhaustion was longer in control than treatment (46.7±31.1 vs. 41.3±26.3

BACKGROUND: Approximately 2 million people participate in long-distance running races in the United States annually. Reports of race-related cardiac arrests have generated concern about the safety of this activity.
METHODS: We assessed the incidence and outcomes of cardiac arrest associated with marathon and half-marathon races in the United States from January 1, 2000, to May 31, 2010. We determined the clinical characteristics of the arrests by interviewing survivors and the next of kin of nonsurvivors, reviewing medical records, and analyzing postmortem data.
RESULTS: Of 10.9 million runn

Traumatic knee injuries in automobile accidents and sports often lead to damage of the peroneal nerve. A lack of control of muscles innervated by the peroneal nerve due to this damage, results in the inability to dorsiflex and evert the foot and to extend the toes. This condition is commonly known as foot drop. Foot drop reduces the stability in the body while walking and running and may also cause injury due to lack of foot clearance during the swing phase of the gait. Traditionally, an ankle foot orthosis (AFO), comprised of a moulded sheet of plastic that conforms around the posterior calf

Incidence rate of running related injuries is high but forces acting on the body during injury are hardly known. During a data collection session in the investigator's laboratory, one subject sustained a medial gastrocnemius muscle strain injury while running across a force platform. This case report aimed to investigate the causes of this acute running injury by comparing the running speed, external forces, joint kinetics and kinematics, and muscle-tendon complex length of the injured trial to five preceding noninjured trials. The injured trial was characterized by faster running speed, highe

Circadian rhythms are self-sustaining oscillations that free-run in constant conditions with a period close to 24 h. Overt circadian rhythms have been studied mostly using onset phase as the marker for the underlying pacemaker. Using in vivo online pineal microdialysis, the authors have performed detailed analysis of free-running profiles of rat pineal secretory products, including N-acetylserotonin (NAS) and melatonin that have precisely defined onsets and offsets. When rats entrained in LD 12:12 were released into constant darkness (DD), both onset and offset phases of melatonin and NAS free

AIM: To analyse social, clinical, x-ray and immunological features of tuberculosis (TB) in 117 patients from the Moscow region with concurrent HIV-infection.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The patients were divided into 3 groups depending on the time of TB and HIV-infection detection in relation to each other. Group 1 patients (20.5%) had suffered from TB for 2 years before detection of HIV-infection, group 2 patients (51%) were diagnosed simultaneously for 1-2 years to have both diseases, group 3 patients (28%) had suffered from HIV-infection for 2 years before the diagnosis of TB.

Trail running's popularity among women is increasing, yet research addressing the unique physiological demands, performance factors, and injury patterns in this population remains limited. This scoping systematic review aimed to map the existing research landscape on female trail runners; synthesize current evidence across physiological, nutritional, injury, and performance domains; and identify critical knowledge gaps to guide future investigations. A systematic search was conducted across four major databases (EBSCO, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science) up to December 2024. Eligible studies were

To run faster, distance runners need shoes that reduce their metabolic energy expenditure. Here, we studied how shoe heel-toe drop affects metabolic energy expenditure during running. To do so, we studied 20 runners as they ran at 3.5 m/s in custom footwear that varied in heel-toe drop: 0, 10, 20, and 30 mm. Shoe model and mass were fixed. Overall, increasing shoe heel-toe drop increased net metabolic power during running ([Formula: see text] = 0.12, P = 0.016); where changing from a 20 to 0 mm heel-toe drop reduced net metabolic power by 1.6%. Higher heel-toe drop decreased stance average ver

PURPOSE: To present and assess an outlier mitigation method that makes free-running volumetric cardiovascular MRI (CMR) more robust to motion.
METHODS: The proposed method, called compressive recovery with outlier rejection (CORe), models outliers in the measured data as an additive auxiliary variable. We enforce MR physics-guided group sparsity on the auxiliary variable, and jointly estimate it along with the image using an iterative algorithm. For evaluation, CORe is first compared to traditional compressed sensing (CS), robust regression (RR), and an existing outlier rejection method using

Business researchers use experimental methods extensively due to their high internal validity. However, controlled laboratory and crowdsourcing settings often introduce issues of artificiality, data contamination, and low managerial relevance of the dependent variables. Field experiments can overcome these issues but are traditionally time- and resource-consuming. This primer presents an alternative experimental setting to conduct online field experiments in a time- and cost-effective way. It does so by introducing the Facebook A/B split test functionality, which allows for random assignment o
