Rural-urban health disparities for mood disorders and obesity in a midwestern community.

INTRODUCTION: Prior studies indicate greater disease burden for obesity among rural compared with urban residents but no differences for mood disorder based on geographic location. Recent attention has focused on the need to examine regional rural-urban disparities in disease burden. We focused on mood disorders and obesity prevalence within three southeastern Minnesota counties served by the Mayo Clinic Center for Translational Science Award, in Rochester, Minnesota, as these were top priorities identified in community health needs assessments. METHODS: Cross-sectional study to assess the as

HIV Testing and Treatment with the Use of a Community Health Approach in Rural Africa.

BACKGROUND: Universal antiretroviral therapy (ART) with annual population testing and a multidisease, patient-centered strategy could reduce new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections and improve community health. METHODS: We randomly assigned 32 rural communities in Uganda and Kenya to baseline HIV and multidisease testing and national guideline-restricted ART (control group) or to baseline testing plus annual testing, eligibility for universal ART, and patient-centered care (intervention group). The primary end point was the cumulative incidence of HIV infection at 3 years. Secondary

Weight management in rural health clinics: The Midwest diet and exercise trial.

UNLABELLED: Obesity prevalence is higher in rural compared to urban residents. Rural health clinics offer a potential venue for delivery of weight management. However, traditional programs require travel to attend on-site meetings which is impractical or inconvenient for rural residents. Clinic staff in most rural settings are unlikely to be trained to provide effective weight management. Remote delivery using group phone conferences (GP) or individual phone calls (IP), by staff associated with rural clinics eliminates the need for travel to attend on-site meetings. The effectiveness of these

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Health in Adulthood in a Rural Population-Based Sample.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including emotional abuse, substance abuse in the household, separation or divorce, physical abuse, violence between adults, mental illness in the household, sexual abuse, or incarceration of a household member, have the potential to profoundly impact health and well-being in adulthood. To assess whether previously reported relationships between ACEs and health outcomes withstand validation, we conducted a community-based ACE study with the unique capacity to link self-reported ACEs and other survey results to validated health data in an electr

The oral health of children in a rural area of the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

The lack of information on oral health in Laos makes it difficult to estimate the need and methods for preventing oral disease. This study identified problems concerning the oral health of Lao children. The study subjects were 59 school children who lived in Pakkading District. Dental caries, gingivitis malocclusions, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, dental plaque, and calculus were examined. We observed an average of 1.6 decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) and 4.1 decayed and filled deciduous teeth (dft) per child. 25.4% had gingivitis scores from 16 to 20 on the papillary, marg

Women's health in rural Uganda: problems, coping strategies, and recommendations for change.

This study draws upon 63 semi-structured interviews with rural women in central Uganda to elicit women's health problems, coping mechanisms, and recommendations for improved health services. The health problems most commonly reported by the women were sexually transmitted diseases, especially syphilis, abdominal pain, genital sores, and mental stress. Women indicated several barriers to obtaining health care, such as inaccessibility to health-care facilities, lack of time and money, and dependence on men for permission to leave the home. In response, they had devised several coping strategies

Public health impact of establishing the cause of bacterial infections in rural Asia.

Recent studies delineating bacterial causes of fever in rural Asia indicate a major role for several previously under-recognized pathogens, including Rickettsia and Leptospira. The use of blood culture for the first time to investigate patients with febrile illness in rural Asia has also revealed some unexpected findings, e.g. Staphylococcus aureus is the major cause of bacteraemia in children aged <1 year in Laos. The spread of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens such as MRSA into rural Asia has already occurred and requires monitoring. These factors have major implications for empirical therap

A community survey on maternal and child health services utilization in rural Ethiopia.

A household health interview survey on MCH services utilization was carried out in 22 villages of a rural district of Arsi region, Ethiopia, before the launching of an integrated MCH programme. Coverage of antenatal services was 26%, and 61% of the women who received antenatal care reported having had 3 or more visits. A plant indicator of air pollution and human health in Japanese rural communities.

An investigation of the effects of air pollution on vegetation and human health was conducted in a low-degree air-polluted Japanese rural area. The validity of the criteria, which were expressed as Bi-band ratios (R/B, R/G) in leaves of Japanese cedars based on infrared air photography, has been proved worthwhile for estimating the injury to the cedars. The degree of injury to the cedars by field survey showed a significant positive correlation with the concentration of sulfur oxide in the air for the last 3 years. The quantity of water-soluble sulfur in leaves of the cedar was less in the lea
