Saline versus saline with blood as a contrast agent for right-to-left shunt diagnosis by transcranial Doppler: is there a significant difference?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Agitated saline solution (AS) is the contrast agent (CA) of choice for the diagnosis of right-to-left shunt (RLS). The aim of this study was to compare AS to AS with blood (ASb) in the diagnosis and quantification of RLS by contrast-enhanced transcranial Doppler (cTCD). METHODS: Forty-two patients were evaluated for RLS in both of the middle cerebral arteries (MCA) by cTCD. Both AS and ASb were used as CAs while the patient breathed spontaneously and during two different moments of a Valsalva maneuver. Embolus track (ET) counts were obtained from each MCA (MCA analysis

Salinity gradients shape rhizosphere bacterial diversity and assembly of wheat in saline-alkali rice-wheat rotation soils.

The saline-alkali soils of the Yellow River Delta constitute an important reserve of arable land resources in China, and the rice-wheat cropping system has been widely recognized as an effective approach for improving soil quality and increasing crop yields in this region. However, region-specific field investigations evaluating the effects of salinity on wheat rhizosphere bacterial communities within this system remain limited. To fill this research gap, we conducted a field salinity gradient experiment with low-salinity (LST, 1.5 g/kg), medium-salinity (MST, 3.0 g/kg), and high-salinity (HST

Maintenance Fluid Therapy with Saline, Dextrose-Supplemented Saline or Lactated Ringer in Childhood: Short-Term Metabolic Effects.

UNLABELLED: Maintenance with isotonic fluids is recommended in children with gastroenteritis and failure of oral rehydration therapy. However, little is known on the short-term effects of the commonly prescribed intravenous solutions on metabolic balance in children. The aim of this study is to report on our experience with normal saline, dextrose-supplemented saline and lactated Ringer solution. METHODS: A retrospective analysis from the charts of all previously apparently healthy children with acute gastroenteritis, mild to moderate dehydration and failure of oral rehydration, evaluated bet

Survival of Streptococcus equi subsp. equi in Normal Saline Versus Phosphate-Buffered Saline and at Two Different Temperatures.

Streptococcus equi subsp. equi causes strangles in horses. Sampling to detect carriers is important for the control of the disease, and maximizing the sensitivity of this procedure is necessary. To provide a basis for the choice of sampling solution and transport temperature for samples, comparisons were made between the survival of Streptococcus equi subsp. equi in normal saline versus phosphate-buffered saline and at two different temperatures (cold and room temperature). At present, normal saline is used to sample the nasopharynx as well as the guttural pouches, and the sampling solution is

A comparative screening of freshwater and marine microalgae for salinity-induced intracellular mannitol accumulation.

INTRODUCTION: The growing demand for sustainable, low-glycaemic sugar alternatives has increased interest in biological polyol production; however, comparative evaluations of microalgae for salinity-induced intracellular polyol accumulation remain limited. METHODS: This study systematically screened two freshwater species (Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus) and two marine species (Dunaliella tertiolecta and Nannochloropsis oculata) using a two-stage cultivation strategy to evaluate intracellular polyol accumulation and associated physiological responses under salinity stress. Pore fluid pH-salinity homogenization for sustained electroosmosis: Performance, energy efficiency and underlying mechanisms.

Electroosmosis facilitates fluid transport in low-permeability soils and is widely used in electrokinetic remediation. Its application is hindered by a progressive decline in flow rate and a concurrent increase in specific electrical energy consumption. The pH and salinity have been identified as the most relevant variables affecting electroosmotic flow (EOF). However, a synergistic and process-based regulation of pore fluid properties remains insufficiently developed. This study proposes a pore fluid pH-salinity homogenization conditioning (PFHC) method that stabilizes electrochemical conditi

Population-specific physiological response profiles characterize salinity tolerance in the Antarctic extremophile Colobanthus quitensis.

INTRODUCTION: Extremophile plant species provide valuable systems for understanding how salinity tolerance varies among populations originating from contrasting environments. The Antarctic vascular plant Colobanthus quitensis, is widely distributed from temperate South America to the maritime Antarctic and represents an useful model for investigating population-level physiological variation under environmental constraints. However, the physiological basis of variation in salinity tolerance among population remains poorly understood. METHODS: Here, we evaluated morphophysiological and biochemi

Melatonin-mediated alleviation of salinity stress in diverse mango (Mangifera indica L.) rootstock genotypes.

Mango (Mangifera indica L.), a tropical fruit crop with significant commercial value, is particularly vulnerable to salt stress. Salinity exposure causes severe physiological disruptions, including leaf burning, chlorosis, and stunted growth, especially in the early phases of plant development, and can be mitigated by salt tolerance. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of exogenous melatonin in mitigating salinity stress at 60 mM NaCl. The findings showed that applying melatonin at an optimal level of 150 μM improved photosynthetic efficiency, relative water content, and membrane sta

Vulnerability to low salinity but compensatory responses to low pH in an intertidal limpet.

Rising anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions have driven ongoing ocean warming and associated climate changes. In the Yellow Sea, this warming is associated with enhanced monsoonal rainfall, which increases freshwater inputs and lowers coastal salinity. Increased freshwater input can weaken seawater buffering capacity, thereby leading to lower pH conditions in coastal environments. Here, we examined the effects of low pH and low salinity on the intertidal limpet Patelloida pygmaea. Adult limpets were exposed for 31 days to four experimental artificial seawater conditions combining two pH leve

Comparative Evolution of SLC12 Transporters in Tilapias and Salinity-Responsive Expression in Nile Tilapia.

Tilapia species differ markedly in salinity tolerance, providing a useful system for investigating the molecular basis of osmotic adaptation. The solute carrier family 12 (SLC12) encodes cation-chloride cotransporters that play central roles in ion homeostasis and osmoregulation. Here, we compared the SLC12 gene family among Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), Mozambique tilapia (O. mossambicus), and blue tilapia (O. aureus) using comparative genomic, phylogenetic, protein-structural, and chromosomal analyses. Separately, we re-analyzed a published long-term salinity RNA-seq dataset from GIF

Boron nanoparticles combined with auxin alleviate salinity-induced oxidative stress in Oryza sativa L.

The agriculture sector is encountering a range of challenges globally, driven by global climate changes and resource constraints. Crop production is restricted by numerous abiotic factors including salinity stress which negatively influences the physiological, biochemical and molecular responses of plants. Several studies demonstrated that some nanoparticles may enhance crop production by directly boosting the tolerance of plants aganist the salinity stress. In this study, the protective role of boron nitride nanoparticles (BNPs) was determined in two rice cultivars which differ in salinity to

Pore-Scale Insights into the Contribution of Clays during Low-Salinity Waterflooding in Sandstones.

The presence of clay minerals is generally accepted to be a necessary condition for low-salinity flooding to improve oil recovery in sandstones. However, there have been no in situ pore-scale observations that low-salinity brine releases more oil from pores with higher proportions of clay minerals present. In fact, there is a growing body of evidence that significant oil release can occur from quartz and feldspar mineral surfaces during low-salinity flooding. In this work, we use X-ray Micro-CT imaging technology to image unsteady-state tertiary low-salinity waterflooding experiments in Berea,

Photochemical treatment strategies for okadaic acid degradation: Effects of salinity, oxidants, and UV sources.

This study evaluates the degradation and detoxification of okadaic acid (OA), a marine biotoxin, through UV-assisted photochemical processes using environmentally relevant OA concentrations. Experiments were conducted in distilled water (DW) and artificial seawater (ASW), applying two UV sources: UV-LED (λmax = 275 nm) and low-pressure mercury lamp (LP-Hg; λ = 254 nm), combined with hydrogen peroxide (HP), sodium peroxydisulfate (PDS), and potassium peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Photolysis alone was ineffective, and kinetic rate constants (kobs; min-1) followed the trend UV/PMS > UV/PDS > UV/HP for

Improving the genetic potential of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) germplasm to tolerate salinity stress.

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is the most consumed vegetable worldwide with the potential for diverse ecological adaptation. However, increasing salinization and changing climatic conditions are posing serious threats to the growth, yield, and quality of okra. Therefore, to mitigate increasing soil salinization and ensure sustainable okra production under rapidly changing climatic conditions, evaluation of new okra germplasm to develop salt tolerant cultivars is direly needed. The present study was designed to evaluate the genetic resources of okra genotypes for salt tolerance at growth and

Effect of pH and Salinity on the Ability of Salmonella Serotypes to Form Biofilm.

Salmonella is a major cause of food-borne infections in Europe, and the majority of human infections are caused by only a few serotypes, among them are Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serotype Enteritidis (hereafter Salmonella Enteritidis), Salmonella Typhimurium, and the monophasic variant of S. Typhimurium. The reason for this is not fully understood, but could include virulence factors as well as increased ability to transfer via the external environment. Formation of biofilm is considered an adaptation strategy used by bacteria to overcome environmental stresses. In order to assess the

The Effect of Salinity on Egg Development and Viability of Schistocephalus solidus (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea).

Schistocephalus solidus plerocercoids commonly infect three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus populations in brackish and freshwaters, but infections are typically absent from marine populations. Here we provide an experimental test of the salinity tolerance of S. solidus eggs, to determine the role of salinity in limiting the distribution of infection in coastal zones. We find that S. solidus eggs, derived from the in vitro culture of 3 different plerocercoids, developed normally in salinities of up to 12.5‰, but above this egg viability dropped rapidly, and no egg hatching was observ

Understanding the salinity issue of coal mine spoils in the context of salt cycle.

Coal mine spoils (CMSs), the solid wastes originated from the rock formations and soil cover overlying or interbedded with coal seams, are a worldwide environmental management challenge. Previous studies have shown that salinity is of most concern among the CMSs' environmental impacts, especially in Australia. With increasing concerns from both the governments and communities, there is a real need for the coal mining industry to understand the source, dynamics and management options of CMS salinity. We reviewed the general properties of CMSs from coal mine sites worldwide and the current under

Effects of salinity on growth and ion regulation of juvenile alligator gar Atractosteus spatula.

The alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula) is a primitive euryhaline fish, found primarily in estuaries and freshwater drainages associated with the northern Gulf of Mexico. The extent of its hypo-osmotic regulatory abilities is not well understood. In order to determine how salinity affects growth rates and ionic and osmoregulation, juvenile alligator gar (330 days after hatch; 185 g) were exposed to 4 different salinities (0, 8, 16, and 24 ppt) for a 30-day period. Specific growth rate, plasma osmolality and ion concentrations, gill and gastrointestinal tract Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activities, and
