The aim of this study was a comparison of key haematological features of diploid (2n) and triploid (3n) Caspian salmon (Salmo trutta caspius). Morphometric indices of erythrocytes were determined on blood smears by light microscopy. Triploidy significantly (P < 0.001) increased all morphometric indices measured in the erythrocytes including cell size, cell surface area, and cell volume. The increase in cell size was larger for the major (27%) axis than for the minor (22%) axis, thus making erythrocytes of 3n Caspian salmon more ellipsoidal. Parasitic sea lice are serious problems in aquaculture. The true cost of these parasites is unknown. We demonstrate the economic burden imposed by sea lice, so that researchers, aquatic specialists, and policy makers can approximate the economic cost of this problem and work towards developing alternative control methods.

Immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization were used to test the hypothesis that gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons are formed in the olfactory placode during embryonic development in a salmonid, Oncorhynchus nerka. A method was validated for analysis of oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), and chlortetracycline (CTC) in fortified salmon muscle tissue. Recoveries of OTC were 100 +/- 6, 86 +/- 6, and 82 +/- 5% (n = 6) at fortification levels of 1.0, 0.5, and 0.2 ppm, respectively. Recoveries of TC were 68 +/- 4, 65 +/- 6, and 66 +/- 7%; recoveries of CTC were 45 +/- 9, 48 +/- 8, and 0%, respectively. Detection limits for OTC and TC were 0.08 and 0.09 ppm, respectively.

The absorption kinetics of intranasal salmon calcitonin were assessed in 4 normal subjects and 9 patients with Klinefelter's syndrome. After administration, absorption occurred within 5 minutes. In carcinoid syndrome, calcitonin administration proved to have an effective action in reducing symptomatology. During the perioperative period, treatment with somatostatin, thanks to the ease of administration of the drug and the reductive action of gastroenteric secretion, demonstrated its usefulness in countering the action of serotonin. A total of four children with osteogenesis imperfecta, three with type I and one with type III forms of the disease, were treated with synthetic salmon calcitonin for 18-24 months. The annual fracture rate was decreased during calcitonin therapy compared with the period preceding it. No patient presented a marked inflexion in linear growth and a transient improvement was even noticed in two cases.

Calcitonin (CT) constitutes one of the major choices for the pharmacologic treatment of postmenopausal and senile osteoporosis. In postmenopausal osteoporosis, CT, analogous to estrogens, determines increase of bone mass, improvement of intestinal calcium absorption and a positivization of calcium balance.
