OBJECTIVES: We attempted to define the microbiologic characteristics of acute salpingitis in women presenting to an urban emergency department with pelvic inflammatory disease and to determine the effectiveness of ofloxacin in treating this disease.
STUDY DESIGN: Women with pelvic inflammatory disease underwent laparoscopy to confirm the diagnosis and to culture the fallopian tubes and cul-de-sac. All patients (n = 36) were treated with parenteral ofloxacin and discharged on a regimen of oral ofloxacin to complete a 10- to 14-day course.

A case of primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube with coexistent tuberculosis has been presented, and previously reported cases in the literature reviewed. One of the conditions that can develop if not treated appropriately is pyosalpinx. A case of pyosalpinx causing xanthogranulomatous inflammation, a rare type of inflammation, is presented.

This study aimed to determine whether the lotus leaf extract (LLE) had the effect of treating salpingitis in laying hens. First, the salpingitis model was established by the method of bacterial infection. Chlamydia trachomatis is a well-known cause of acute and chronic salpingitis, accounting for approximately half of all cases of pelvic inflammatory disease. Typically, patients with acute chlamydial salpingitis present with acute lower abdominal pain, tenderness on bimanual pelvic examination, or vaginal discharge. We describe a case of acute chlamydial salpingitis with marked ascites and an adnexal mass that simulated a malignant neoplasm. Microscopically, a severe lymphofollicular salpingitis and a marked lymphofollicular hyperplasia of the omentum and retroperitoneal lymph nodes were found.

Follow-up information is presented on 37 women with SI and a history of severe acute salpingitis. It was found that 18 (49%) had clinical symptoms of intermittent or persistent back pain and stiffness indicating SI; 8 of them had serious and persistent discomfort. A patient with co-existent carcinoma and tuberculosis of the Fallopian tube is described. Tuberculosis was diagnosed by the finding of numerous typical granulomata throughout the uterus, tubes and ovaries, and by exclusion of other possible causes of these; and carcinoma by the finding of solid tumour, with a marked anisocytic appearance, invading submucosa. Despite the well recognised epithelial hyperplasia seen in tuberculous salpingitis, there remains no evidence that the occurrence of carcinoma in such cases is other than fortuitous.
