Synovial sarcomas of the head and neck: comparative analysis with synovial sarcoma of the extremities.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed synovial sarcoma (SS) of the head and neck in order to identify features associated with survival improvement and compared them with the survival of SS of limbs. METHODS: Clinical charts and histopathologic material with analysis for SYT/SSX gene rearrangement of 16 patients were reviewed. The clinicopathologic features and their association with survival were analyzed and compared with 174 SS of limbs. RESULTS: The average age was 24.2 years (range 21-86). Eight cases occurred in each sex. The most frequent site was the parapharyngeal space (PPS). The mean tum

Giant retroperitoneal sarcoma: a case report and review of the management of retroperitoneal sarcomas.

A 42-year-old man presented with lower abdominal pain and a vague abdominal mass. He underwent resection of a well-differentiated liposarcoma arising from his retroperitoneum measuring 50 cm and weighing 11.7 kg (25.8 lb). This is the second largest retroperitoneal soft-tissue sarcoma (RSTS) that has been reported. Over the last 15 years 1123 patients with RSTS in 25 series have been reported with a mean tumor size of 15.7 cm. RSTS represents 0.10 to 0.15 per cent of all malignancies but 45 per cent of all retroperitoneal tumors. Diagnosis and treatment of RSTS can be extremely challenging for

Ewing Sarcoma PDX Models.

Ewing sarcoma (EWS) is a rare malignant pediatric tumor, and patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) could represent a possibility to increase the number of available models to study this disease. Compared to cell-derived xenografts (CDX), PDXs are reported to recapitulate better tumor microenvironment, heterogeneity, genetic, and epigenetic features. They are considered reliable models due to their superior predictive value when comparing preclinical efficacy and treatment response in patients. In this chapter, we extensively describe a method for generating EWS PDX models, along with their validat

Primary tracheal Ewing sarcoma.

Primary Ewing sarcoma of the trachea is an exceptionally uncommon malignancy that often presents with non-specific airway symptoms, leading to diagnostic delays. We report a woman in her early 30s with progressive cough, dyspnoea, hoarseness and stridor who was initially mismanaged as having common airway disease. Imaging revealed a near-obstructing tracheal mass, which was successfully excised bronchoscopically. Histopathology examination, immunohistochemistry and fluorescent in situ hybridisation confirmed the diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma with EWSR1 gene rearrangement. The patient was subseque

[Cutaneous clear cell sarcoma].

BACKGROUND: Clear cell sarcoma is a rare, aggressive neoplasm with melanocytic differentiation, characterised by an EWSR1 fusion with ATF1, CREB1 or CREM. In addition to the classic deep-seated variant, a significantly rarer dermal/cutaneous form exists. First described in 2009, it is frequently misdiagnosed due to its histopathological and immunohistochemical overlap with melanoma. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to summarise the current state of knowledge on cutaneous clear cell sarcoma, including pathogenesis, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology and differential diagnoses

Ewing's sarcoma in pregnancy.

Here is a case of a woman in her mid-20s, with primary infertility for a duration of 6 years with irregular cycles, following which she spontaneously conceived. Unaware of her pregnancy status, she underwent concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy for extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma. During the workup following treatment of Ewing's sarcoma, she underwent ultrasonographic examination, which showed a single, live intrauterine gestation. The pregnancy was terminated due to cytotoxic effects of the chemoradiation. Treatment of Ewing's sarcoma involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radio

Studies on "Ascites sarcoma".

This review seeks to highlight and celebrate Professor Tomizo Yoshida's famous work on "Establishment and characterization of a rat ascites sarcoma, later named "Yoshida ascites sarcoma". Considering the tremendous contribution of this ascites tumor system to the subsequent promotion of research on cancer biology and cancer chemotherapy, his paper should be regarded as a monumental one in the cancer field. The research was carried out during 1943 and the results were submitted to this Journal in October 1944, when Japan was approaching a debilitating defeat in World War II in August 1945. In 1

An unusual myeloid sarcoma.

Myeloid sarcoma is a tumor mass of immature myeloid or monocytic cells (rarely erythroid or megakaryocytic) occurring in an extramedullary site. A de novo promyelocytic granulocytic sarcoma is a very rare tumor. We report a case of a young man presenting with a paraspinal myeloid sarcoma of promyelocytic origin.

T315I-mutated myeloid sarcoma.

Myeloid Sarcoma (MS) is diagnosed by an extramedullary proliferation of immature granulocytic cells. Its association with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is rare. CML is characterized by BCR-ABL1 gene rearrangement and therapies with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) are very effective. However, TKI resistance may occur secondary to the development of ABL1 mutations. T315I is a common mutation that accounts for ∼20% clinical resistance to TKIs. We report the first case of a patient with T315I mutated myeloid sarcoma that occurred after complete cytogenetic response with dasatinib of a chronic ph

Uterine sarcoma - current perspectives.

Uterine sarcomas comprise a group of rare tumors with differing tumor biology, natural history and response to treatment. Diagnosis is often made following surgery for presumed benign disease. Currently, preoperative imaging does not reliably distinguish between benign leiomyomas and other malignant pathology. Uterine leiomyosarcoma is the most common sarcoma, but other subtypes include endometrial stromal sarcoma (low grade and high grade), undifferentiated uterine sarcoma and adenosarcoma. Clinical trials have shown no definite survival benefit of adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy and ha

Management of Truncal Sarcoma.

The management of truncal sarcoma presents unique challenges to the treating physician for reasons specific to this tumor location. First, the reconstruction options after resection of the abdominal or chest wall require a balance between cosmesis and structural integrity due to the multiplanar forces exerted on this region. Second, the histologies that commonly arise in this region are often associated with high local recurrence rates, which often require complex decision making due to prior therapy. Finally, sarcomas of the trunk in the inguinal region involve those organs in the genitourina

Primary pericardial synovial sarcoma.

A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with cardiomegaly on a chest roentgenogram. A mediastinal tumor was observed during a chest computed tomographic scan and the patient was diagnosed with pericardial synovial sarcoma as a result of a tumor biopsy. Surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy were carried out, and although the tumor temporarily decreased in size, it subsequently increased and the patient died approximately 3 years following the initial medical examination. Most synovial sarcomas commonly occur in the vicinity of the joints of the extremities. Therefore, we herein report a

Peripheral nerve fibromyxoid sarcoma.

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a rare soft-tissue neoplasm with metastatic potential and needs to be recognized as such, because it can be mistaken for other types of sarcoma due to its unremarkable appearance. This 49-year-old man presented with an approximately 5-cm mass on the anteromedial aspect of his left thigh that slowly increased over 10 years. Clinical symptoms were limited to local discomfort and intermittent distal numbness. Due to the location, imaging findings, and lack of serious symptoms, the initial differential diagnosis favored a schwannoma. An initial biopsy revea

Primary intracerebral myeloid sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma rarely presents in the absence of systemic myeloid disease. CASE REPORT: In this study, we present a case of intracerebral myeloid sarcoma with no diagnosis of any hematological disease in a 22-year-old male patient in whom brain magnetic resonance image revealed a meningioma. However, biopsy showed myeloid sarcoma. No myeloid disease was determined. The mass disappeared following 8 cycles of chemotherapy. In the literature, we determined only 8 similar cases cited between 1970 and 2011. CONCLUSION: Intracerebral myeloid sarcoma has currently no standard treatment

Primary cardiac synovial sarcoma.

Primary cardiac synovial sarcoma is an uncommon malignant neoplasm, with only a handful of cases reported in the English literature to date. Synovial sarcomas have also been described at other unusual sites, such as the heart, pleuropulmonary region, kidney, prostate, liver, mediastinum, retroperitoneum, gastrointestinal tract, and peripheral nerve. For synovial sarcomas that arise at these unusual locations, definitive diagnosis is challenging and requires use of ancillary diagnostic procedures, such as immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and molecular genetic techniques, for confirmat

[Cytologic diagnosis of sarcoma].

Soft tissue swelling represents a common clinical sign of a variety of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. Sarcoma is rarely a cause. Fine needle biopsy as a minimally invasive, economic and accurate method is well suited for the diagnosis of inflammatory/infectious processes as well as of recurrent and metastatic disease. Cytologic diagnosis of primary soft tissue tumors is also feasible. It requires close collaboration with other medical disciplines and incorporation of clinical, radiological and morphologic findings. Clinical data such as age, gender, size and topography are important pa
