Pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma (PPSS) is a rare entity, similar to synovial sarcoma of soft tissue (STSS). There are 120 published cases of PPSS, but no studies have explored the expression of TLE1. In soft tissues, it has been proven a useful marker, but in tumors of other sites, its expression has not been explored. The main objective was to study the expression and diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of TLE1 in a group of PPSS, of which the diagnosis was corroborated by fluorescence in situ hybridization confirming t(X;18) in a tissue microarray. Immunohistochemistry including TLE1, vi

Mycetoma, also commonly referred to as Madura foot, is statistically rare in the United States. However, it is endemic to other parts of the world. It is a pseudotumor characterized by a triad of tumefaction, draining sinuses, and grains. Two types exist, with each caused by different groups of organisms that require different treatment approaches. Therefore, the exact diagnosis and culture of the organism is vital to successful treatment outcomes. Synovial sarcoma, in contrast, is a malignancy much more commonly seen in the United States. It is characterized by a well-circumscribed, often pal

Pleural synovial sarcomas are an extremely rare disease entity, and only 21 surgical cases, including this one, have been reported. We present a case of synovial sarcoma that underwent pneumonectomy for a recurrence of the disease. A 31-year-old female, who in June 2005 had undergone surgical resection of a monophasic synovial sarcoma in the left pleural cavity combined with the affected left diaphragm, was admitted to our hospital in January 2007 and underwent chemotherapy with ifosfamide, pirarubicin, and methotrexate for a recurrent synovial sarcoma in the left pleural cavity. Primary synovial sarcoma of the head and neck is a rare entity, nevertheless the literature count on 80 published cases, among them 7 linguals. We contribute with another case: a synovial sarcoma of the tongue, in a 26-year-old man; having a biphasic tumor pattern, with two malignant constituents, epithelial and sarcomatous, similar to other of the same location. Laboratory tests: histochemical, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic were done in order to state the tumor's histogenesis. Our results suggest a pluripotential mesenchymal origin instead of a synovial origin, because the epit

Synovial sarcoma is monomorphic, mostly spindle cell sarcoma, characterized by t(X;18)(p11;q11) translocation, resulting in an SS18::SSX1/2/4 fusion gene. It occurs rarely in the gastrointestinal tract. Less than 50 gastric synovial sarcomas have been reported in the literature. We hereby present a 48-year-old male patient, who presented with weight loss and was found to have a mass in his stomach. Histopathological examination of the biopsy revealed a high-grade spindle cell sarcoma in the gastric wall. By immunohistochemistry, the tumor cells were diffusely positive for TLE1 and SS18-SSX, co

Primary synovial sarcoma (SS) is an uncommon lung tumor. The thigh, knee, ankle, foot, and upper extremities are the most often reported locations of origin. Sarcomas of the lung barely make up 0.1-0.5% of cases. This report presents two cases of primary pulmonary SS. Typically, the tumor manifests at a younger age. When the diagnosis of primary pulmonary SS is confirmed by clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical examinations, molecular testing is not necessary. Instead, radiological and histopathological findings are necessary for the diagnosis of SS. Early surgical intervention is re

We report the case of a woman nearing 70 years old who was admitted to the hospital with a complaint of "epigastric distension for 1 month". Her main signs and symptoms were progressive abdominal distension and occasional abdominal pain. Computed tomography suggested an abdominal mass. She had a surgical history of synovial sarcoma (SS) of the lungs. After admission, she was diagnosed with jejunal SS following a puncture biopsy and laparoscopic surgery. This disease usually occurs in the soft tissues of the limbs, and it is extremely rare for SS to originate in the jejunum. The morphologic het

Synovial sarcoma is a rare and aggressive tumor that primarily affects soft tissues, including the mediastinum, and predominantly affects younger adults. A 23-year-old male patient with mediastinal synovial sarcoma underwent debulking surgery and received 3 cycles of doxorubicin, ifosfamide, and mesna chemotherapy. Mediastinal synovial sarcoma presents diagnostic challenges and poor prognosis. Treatment involves surgical resection, adjuvant chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Mediastinal synovial sarcoma can be diagnosed through histopathological and immunohistochemical examination. Adjuvant chemo

Synovial sarcoma (SyS) is a rare aggressive soft tissue sarcoma carrying the chromosomal translocation t(X;18), encoding the fusion transcript SS18::SSX. The fusion oncoprotein interacts with both BAF enhancer complexes and polycomb repressor complexes, resulting in genome-wide epigenetic perturbations and a unique altered genetic signature. Over 80% of the patients are initially diagnosed with localized disease and have a 5-year survival rate of 70-80%, but metastatic relapse occurs in 50% of the cases. Advanced, unresectable, or metastatic disease has a 5-year survival rate below 10%, repres

Synovial sarcoma, originating from mesenchymal cells, represents a rare and aggressive sarcoma subtype. This case report describes a rare occurrence of synovial sarcoma in the soft palate, with only a few cases described in the literature. A 38-year-old male presented with a painless mass on the soft palate, which raised suspicion of an abscess and emphasized the importance of considering malignancy in persistent or progressive soft tissue masses, even in atypical anatomical locations. The diagnostic workup, including imaging modalities such as maxillofacial computed tomography (CT) scan, magn

New molecular insights are being achieved in synovial sarcoma (SS) that can provide new potential diagnostic and prognostic markers as well as therapeutic targets. In particular, the advancement of research on epigenomics and gene regulation is promising. The concrete hypothesis that the pathogenesis of SS might mainly depend on the disruption of the balance of the complex interaction between epigenomic regulatory complexes and the consequences on gene expression opens interesting new perspectives. The standard of care for primary SS is wide surgical resection combined with radiation in select

We report a third case of a primary intramural synovial sarcoma of the lower gastrointestinal tract. A 50-year-old woman presented with hematochezia, dizziness and shortness of breath. CT imaging revealed a transverse colo-colonic intussusception with a colonic mass serving as a lead point. A subtotal colectomy was performed with oncologic resection of a sausage-like mass in the mid-transverse colon. Pathological assessment showed a biphasic synovial sarcoma. The postoperative hospital course was without complications and the patient was discharged home with plans for postoperative surveillanc

Synovial sarcoma is an uncommon soft tissue tumor occurring mainly in the periarticular region of the extremities in young adults. It happens less frequently in the head and neck, mediastinum, lungs, heart, and digestive tract. A 28-year-old man two months after total esophagectomy with final diagnosis of esophageal synovial sarcoma was referred to our Positron Emission Tomography (PET-CT) department for the evaluation of treatment response and further treatment planning. To our knowledge this case is the 11th case of esophageal synovial sarcoma, being reported in the literature. We presented

We report a rare case of synovial sarcoma in the anterior mediastinum. A 43-year-old man consulted our hospital with a complaint of dyspnea and chest discomfort. Chest computed tomography revealed an anterior mediastinal mass. Small open biopsy was performed, and the pathological examination revealed spindle-shaped cells with severe atypia. Tumor resection was performed. On pathology, fascicular and storiform patterns of spindle-shaped cells with severe atypia were noted. The tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin 7, vimentin, Bcl -2 and CD99, and the amplification of SYT-SSX fusion gene wa

Synovial sarcoma is a malignant soft tissue tumor that most commonly occurs in the extremities of young and middle-aged adults, in the vicinity of large joints. Although synovial sarcoma is frequently associated with joints, it may arise in unexpected sites, such as the mediastinum, heart, lung, pleura, or chest wall. Primary synovial sarcoma of the pleura is rare. To date, nearly 36 cases of primary synovial sarcoma of the pleura have been reported since Gaertner et al. published the first case in 1996. The oncologic characteristics, treatment, and prognosis for pleural synovial sarcomas are

Synovial sarcoma which mainly affects the periarticular tissues of the extremities in young adults is an uncommon seen soft tissue sarcoma with uncertain causative factors. We report a long-course primary synovial sarcoma of the left foot in a 46-year-old man. The initial symptom occurred when he was 26-year-old. During these 20 years, he underwent two operations, with the diagnosis of synovial cyst and nodular synovitis. This time, a lobulated 7 x 5.5 x 6 cm mass was found on computed tomography, and a final diagnosis of synovial sarcoma was made by histological study. The patient underwent a

Tumor-induced hypercalcemia is a frequent complication of advanced cancers, but it has been rarely reported in patients with sarcoma. We report a 16 year-old boy presenting with polyuria, polydipsia and severe dehydration. Laboratory examination revealed severe hypercalcemia (serum calcium 23 mg/dl) which caused emaciation and was accompanied by low serum phosphorus and suppressed parathyroid hormone. Diagnostic imaging revealed a huge anterior mediastinal mass. Hypercalcemia was successfully treated with pamidronate, a bisphosphonate, and the patient underwent surgical resection. Pathological

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma is the fourth most commonly occurring sarcoma, accounting for 8-10% of all sarcomas. They arise from unknown pleuripotent stem cells that are capable of differentiating into mesenchymal and/or epithelial structures. Synovial sarcoma is characterized by specific chromosomal translocation t (X; 18)(p11, q11).
CASE: We report the first case of monophasic synovial sarcoma arising in soft tissues of the vulva in a 33-year-old female. Complete excision of the mass was possible with tumor-free margins.
CONCLUSION: Only four previous cases of biphasic synovial sarcoma ar
