Fucoidan SPW-05-S2 from Sargassum fusiforme inhibits African swine fever virus replication by blocking PAK2/Talin-1 mediated viral endocytosis and factory formation.

African swine fever (ASF), caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV), is currently a major threat to the global swine industry and food security because no safe and effective vaccines or antiviral drugs are available. Developing a defense strategy that incorporates antiviral agents and other approaches is urgently needed. Here, we found that a fucoidan, SPW-05-S2, from a brown alga, inhibits ASFV infection by over 95% in porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs) via suppressing viral entry and factory formation. Using an affinity precipitation workflow, we identified 4 viral and 665 cellular pr

Marine-derived oral nanovesicles from Sargassum fusiforme ameliorate steatohepatitis by activating the HO-1 pathway to inhibit NF-κB signaling and restore small intestinal homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Marine algae, notably the edible brown seaweed Sargassum fusiforme (Hijiki), harbor a vast repertoire of bioactive molecules with potent anti-inflammatory and metabolic regulatory properties. However, their clinical translation is severely hampered by poor systemic bioavailability and susceptibility to gastrointestinal degradation. To circumvent these bottlenecks, we engineered Sargassum fusiforme-derived nanovesicles (SF-NVs) as a robust, intrinsic oral delivery platform. These nanovesicles effectively encapsulate and protect bioactive cargos, significantly augmenting their stabil

Comparative analysis of bio-oil quality from macroalgae via microwave and ultrasonic pretreatment subjected to hydrothermal liquefaction.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) offers a sustainable method for producing bio-oil from algal biomass. Evaluating the microwave- and ultrasonic-pretreatment HTL and examining the quality of bio-oil obtained from HTL of marine macroalgae, namely Sargassum and Caulerpa, are the main objectives and novelty behind this work. Algal feedstocks were pretreated by microwave (500 W and 600 W) or ultrasonic (50 W and 75 W) before heating up to 350 oC for 35 min in the HTL reactor. Results showed that Sargassum and Caulerpa displayed completely different behaviors in pretreatment. The bio-oil yield from S

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that is characterized by irreversible articular cartilage destruction by inflammatory reaction. Among inflammatory stimuli, interleukin-1β (IL-1β) is known to play a crucial role in OA pathogenesis by stimulating several mediators that contribute to cartilage degradation. Recently, the marine brown alga Sargassum serratifolium has been reported to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in microglial and human umbilical vein endothelial cell models using lipopolysaccharide and tumor necrosis factor-α, but its beneficial effects on O

Stimulating the Hematopoietic Effect of Simulated Digestive Product of Fucoidan from Sargassum fusiforme on Cyclophosphamide-Induced Hematopoietic Damage in Mice and Its Protective Mechanisms Based on Serum Lipidomics.

Hematopoietic damage is a serious side effect of cytotoxic drugs, and agents promoting hematopoiesis are quite important for decreasing the death rate in cancer patients. In our previous work, we prepared the simulated digestive product of fucoidan from Sargassum fusiforme, DSFF, and found that DSFF could activate macrophages. However, more investigations are needed to further evaluate whether DSFF could promote hematopoiesis in the chemotherapy process. In this study, the protective effect of DSFF (1.8-7.2 mg/kg, i.p.) on cyclophosphamide-induced hematopoietic damage in mice and the underlyin

A novel antihypertension agent, sargachromenol D from marine brown algae, Sargassum siliquastrum, exerts dual action as an L-type Ca2+ channel blocker and endothelin A/B2 receptor antagonist.

We isolated the novel vasoactive marine natural products, (5E,10E)-14-hydroxy-2,6,10-trimethylpentadeca-5,10-dien-4-one (4) and sargachromenol D (5), from Sargassum siliquastrum collected from the coast of the East Sea in South Korea by using activity-guided HPLC purification. The compounds effectively dilated depolarization (50mMK+)-induced basilar artery contraction with EC50 values of 3.52±0.42 and 1.62±0.63μM, respectively, but only sargachromenol D (5) showed a vasodilatory effect on endothelin-1 (ET-1)-induced basilar artery contraction (EC50=9.8±0.6μM). These results indicated that sarg

Spatial variation and habitat preference of reef fish and gastropod assemblages from two coastal habitats in subtropical reef, Port Shelter, Hong Kong.

The complexity of coastal habitats could influence the biodiversity in such areas due to the variability of food availability and refuge protection. Coral reefs and macroalgal beds are two important coastal habitats for sustaining a greater abundance of fishes and invertebrates in marine ecosystems because of high productivity and structural refuge. In Hong Kong, there were highly diverse coral communities and seasonal Sargassum beds. A survey of reef fish and gastropod assemblages was conducted in five coral communities and five Sargassum beds in Sai Kung for three dates by SCUBA diving from
