Comparison of therapeutic agents' short-term effects on facial and scalp actinic keratosis: A network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Care for actinic keratosis (AK) can be improved with more knowledge on the relative of effect of indicated therapies. OBJECTIVES: Using network meta-analyses, we quantitatively determined the comparative "short-term" effects of interventions in adults with facial and scalp AK. METHODS: On February 28, 2023, evidence from the peer-reviewed literature was systematically obtained from OVID, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and ClinicalTrials.gov. We analyzed data from studies published in English, of a trial design, and investigating the effect of an actinic kerato

Palisaded neutrophilic and granulomatous dermatitis associated with limited systemic sclerosis.

Palisaded neutrophilic and granulomatous dermatitis (PNGD) is a condition that is characterized histopathologically by a characteristic pattern of granulomatous inflammation in the presence or absence of leukocytoclastic vasculitis. It has been associated with systemic diseases, especially autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and Behçet's disease. A 44-year-old woman with underlying limited systemic sclerosis presented with painful erythematous nodules located on her face and scalp. Histopathologic analysis confirmed a diagnosis of PNGD, which self-resolved within weeks of the bi

[Atypital localisation of pyoderma gangraenosum in patient with ulcerative colitis].

The authors present a case of 61-year-old man with ulcerative colitis and with extraintestinal manifestation of the disease in the form of pyoderma gangraenosum. Multiple skin defects, which developed in atypical localisation (extensive affection of facial and hairy parts of the head) in patient with chronically active form of ulcerative colitis were complicated with bacterial contamination of methicilin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus. After application of the parenteral feeding, corticotherapy and targeted antibiotic therapy the subjective and objective status of the patient marke

Cutaneous myiasis: a simple and effective technique for extraction of Dermatobia hominis larvae.

We describe two patients with cutaneous myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis. Three larvae were removed successfully by a simple technique that involved the injection of each larva with 2 mL of lidocaine, making surgical extraction by incision and exploration unnecessary.

Topical anti-inflammatory agents for seborrheic dermatitis of the face or scalp: summary of a Cochrane Review.

CLINICAL QUESTION: Are there differences in effectiveness between topical anti-inflammatory treatments (steroids, calcineurin inhibitors, or lithium salts) and placebo or azoles in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the face and scalp in adults? BOTTOM LINE: The topical anti-inflammatory treatments were more effective in achieving total clearance of symptoms than placebo by 1.4-fold to 8.5-fold, but there are no considerable differences in the anti-inflammatory topical treatments or in comparison with azoles for short-term treatment. There is no evidence of treatment effects in long-te

Localized and linear lichen planopilaris over the face and scalp with associated alopecia - clinical and dermoscopy pattern.

A case of localized lichen planopilaris over the face, extending to the scalp is presented. This case highlights the different variations, which can occur in the presentation of localized lichen planus. The case was unique because of the extension of the lesions into the scalp. We also wanted to demonstrate the peculiar dermoscopic patterns of active lichen planopilaris when occurring over the face.

Recurrent retroauricular cystic nodules: lichen planus follicularis tumidus.

Lichen planus follicularis tumidus (LPFT) is a rare subtype of lichen planus (LP) that has been most commonly described in middle-aged women. LPFT clinically manifests as recurrent cystic follicular nodules that preferentially involve the retroauricular area; concurrent classic LP lesions on the extremities and mucosal surfaces may also be present. Histologically, LPFT demonstrates epithelial-lined follicular cysts filled with orthokeratotic keratin surrounded by a dense lichenoid infiltrate. We present a case of a 67-year-old man with clinical and histopathologic findings consistent with LPFT

Head lice. Dimeticone is the pediculicide of choice.

Infestation of the scalp by head lice, or pediculosis, is a common, unpleasant but harmless parasitosis. For patients with pediculosis, which topical treatment eradicates the parasites effectively while causing the least harm? We reviewed the available evidence using the standard Prescrire methodology. Lice can be eradicated by shaving the head or combing the hair several times a day for several weeks with a fine-toothed lice comb, although combing is only completely effective in about 50% of cases. Pyrethroids (permethrin, phenothrin and bioallethrin), often combined with piperonyl butoxide,

Cutis verticis gyrata and alopecia areata: a synchronous coincidence?

Cutis verticis gyrata (CVG) is a descriptive term for a scalp condition that is convoluted folds and deep furrows that resemble the surface of the cerebral cortex. It is categorized by the underlying etiology, as primary essential, primary non-essential and secondary. Alopecia areata (AA) is a common, organ specific autoimmune disease, and most AA cases are sporadic. There is clearly a strong genetic component. There is no established relationship between CVG and AA. We report one case which was affected with essential primary CVG and alopecia areata, and suggest a possibility of genetic assoc

Psoriasis treatment in difficult locations: scalp, nails, and intertriginous areas.

Psoriasis comprises a broad spectrum of different clinical courses among which the chronic stable psoriasis by far occurs most frequently. The clinical presentation ranges from mild disease to more serious forms involving large areas of skin and/or joint disease. A number of modifying factors may impact on treatment choice in individual cases (eg, location of the lesions, disease phase, treatment history, response to previous treatments, comorbidity). Aside from this consideration, there are special localizations that remain some of the most difficult regions to control. Such entities are the

Lipedematous scalp: a rare entity.

Lipedematous scalp is characterized by increased subcutaneous thickness of the scalp without any hair change. A 50-year-old female presented with thickening of the scalp without alopecia. She had no disorder other than hypertension. Monthly sonographic measurements without any treatment showed a resolution tendency in some areas and an increased thickness in others. We discuss the characteristics of this rare and possibly underestimated entity, including differential diagnoses.

Multiple cutaneous bronchogenic cysts located on the neck and the scalp. A case report.

Bronchogenic cyst is a benign congenital developmental abnormality of the embryonic foregut. The skin is a rare site for bronchogenic cysts, and in this location it is often a solitary lesion. It is poorly recognized by clinicians and in almost all cases the diagnosis is established by histopathologic examination. This report documents a new case of multiple cutaneous bronchogenic cysts bilaterally located on the neck and on the scalp, which are unusual locations of this lesion.
