Traumatic lateral displacement of the scapula: a radiographic sign of neurovascular disruption.

Scapulothoracic dissociation, as manifested by lateral displacement of the scapula and acromioclavicular separation, is a previously unreported injury in which there is a complete disruption of the scapulothoracic articulation without an overlying partial or complete amputation through the soft tissue. Associated with the disruption of the scapulothoracic articulation are injuries to the brachial plexus and the subclavian artery and vein; multiple open and closed fractures of the ipsilateral upper extremity are often present also. In the patient with severe multiple injuries, scapulothoracic d

Exploring the lived experiences of patients with scapula alata: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Scapula alata (SA) is characterized by scapular winging and limited shoulder function, often as a result of long thoracic nerve impairment. While the physical manifestations are well-documented, the broader implications, particularly the psychological and social consequences, remain underexplored. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of patients with SA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative, cross-sectional design was applied. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 patients from two Danish regional hospitals. Data were analyzed using Malterud's Systematic Text

A cause not to be underestimated in the development of winged scapula: sports-related injuries.

Winged scapula (WS) is characterized by the medial and/or inferior border of the scapula protruding from the thoracic wall. The aetiologies include sports activities, trauma, surgical complications, infections and muscular dystrophies. In our study, we aim to describe the electrophysiological and clinical features of patients referred to our clinic with a preliminary diagnosis of winged scapula and to identify the causes of WS. Between 2009 and 2021, a retrospective analysis was performed of the neurophysiological studies and clinical data of patients who presented with a preliminary diagnosis

Characteristics of the scapula movement during shoulder elevation depend on posture.

[Purpose] This study aimed to clarify the differences in scapular movement during flexion and abduction of the shoulder joint with different postures. [Participants and Methods] This study included 15 male participants. Their shoulder flexion and abduction and angles of the scapular upward rotation, scapular anterior tilt, scapular external rotation, and thoracic spine flexion were measured. Measurements were taken in three positions: the control, thoracic spine flexion, and thoracic spine extension positions using a three-dimensional motion capture system. [Results] In the shoulder flexion, t

Painful shoulder and scapula as initial presentation of advanced lung adenocarcinoma.

Lung adenocarcinoma is a common cancer; even though it has a strong association with previous smoking, there has been described nonsmokers-related cases. Symptoms varies from asymptomatic to hemoptysis or pleural effusion. We describe a case of a patient who presented with painful scapula as primary manifestation of advanced pulmonary malignancy.

Operative Management of a Nonunion at the Superior Angle of the Scapula: A Case Report.

CASE: We present the case of a 40-year-old man with a fracture to the superior angle of the scapula who was treated nonoperatively for 10 months-leading to a symptomatic nonunion. The patient underwent reconstruction of the nonunion for a painful shoulder and was followed clinically for 3 years. He demonstrated major improvement in function and symptoms. CONCLUSION: Nonunions of the scapular superior angle can be effectively managed with surgical reconstruction.

Scapula alata: Diagnosis and treatment by nerve surgery and tendon transfers.

Scapula alata, also known as winged scapula, can lead to severe upper limb impairment. The shoulders' function is altered because the scapula, which supports the upper limb, is no longer stable. Typical scapula alata is described for serratus anterior palsy; however, any scapulothoracic muscle impairment may lead to scapular winging, particularly trapezius palsy, which is easy to miss, thus needed to be considered as a differential diagnosis. The diagnosis is difficult and based on various clinical tests and a thorough examination as well as electroneuromyography and MRI. The treatment ranges

Concomitant Intra-Articular Glenohumeral Lesions in Fractures of the Scapula Body.

BACKGROUND: Scapula body fractures are rare injuries with an incidence of 1% of all fractures accounting for 3% to 5% of all upper extremity fractures. Fractures of the scapula commonly result from high-energetic trauma and fall from great height. While several studies focused on concomitant injuries of chest and head as well as the cervical spine, up to now in the common literature, no study exists analyzing the prevalence of concomitant intra-articular glenohumeral injury following extra-articular scapular fracture. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of concomit

The unusual osteochondroma: A case of snapping scapula syndrome and review of the literature.

Snapping scapula syndrome is a rare condition characterized by crepitus of the scapula on motion of the ipsilateral upper extremity. It may be quite painful and disabling. The majority of cases are due to bursal and muscular disorders. Snapping scapula syndrome secondary to an underlying osteochondroma is an even more infrequent phenomenon. The case presented highlights the unusual post pubertal growth of an osteochondroma of the scapula that progressed to develop a snapping scapular syndrome. Review of the literature revealed less than fifty reported cases of this phenomenon secondary to an u

Delayed Presentation of Osteochondroma at Superior Angle of Scapula-A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Osteochondroma or exostosis is most common primary benign bony tumor comprising of more than one third of the total occurrences. Osteochondromas are considered as an aberration in the normal physial growth plate and originate from the metaphysis of long bone with more than third (35-46%) of cases affecting the bone around the knee (lower end femur> upper end tibia), 10% cases involve the small bones of the hand and 5% involve the pelvis and flat bones like scapula (4-6%) are least involved. These tumors usually affect the growing skeleton and cease to increase in size after skele

Syndrome of fascial incarceration of the long thoracic nerve: winged scapula.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the results from early intervention surgery in patients with the syndrome of fascial incarceration of the long thoracic nerve and consequent winged scapula. METHODS: Six patients with a syndrome of nerve trapping without specific nerve strain limitations were followed up. RESULTS: The patients achieved improvement of their symptoms 6-20 months after the procedure. The motor symptoms completely disappeared, without any persistent pain. The medial deformity of the winged scapula improved in all cases, without any residual esthetic disorders. CONCLUSION: The approach of e

Fractures of the anatomical neck of the scapula: two cases and review of the literature.

Anatomical neck fractures of the scapula are rare. The authors have found in the literature only four radiologically documented fractures of the anatomical neck of the scapula. Two of them were published by Hardegger et al., the third case was published by Arts and Louette. The last case, in fact only a radiograph and a rather poor 3D CT reconstruction of a fracture of the anatomical neck of scapula, was published by Jeong and Zuckerman. Together with author's two patients, the group of radiologically verified anatomical neck fractures of the scapula comprises six cases in total (four men, one

Pectoralis major to scapula transfer for patients with serratus anterior palsy.

Serratus anterior palsy can be a very disabling condition. However, not much has been written about many other upper limb palsies and the surgical approaches for them. In contrast, not much has been published about this particular muscle palsy. Most investigators engaged in the treatment of peripheral nerve palsies are focused on the restoration of elbow flexion/extension and shoulder abduction/external rotation. Nevertheless, scapulothoracic stability is of utmost importance for shoulder function inasmuch as it offers a stable base for arm motion--mostly forward flexion. As a result, serratus

Correlation between morphometry of the suprascapular notch and anthropometric measurements of the scapula.

The concept of the study was to find the correlation between the morphometry of the suprascapular notch and basic anthropometric measurements of the human scapula. The measurements of the human scapulae included: morphological length and width, maximal width and length projection of scapular spine, length of acromion, and maximal length of the coracoid process. The glenoid cavity was measured in two perpendicular directions to evaluate its width and length. The width-length scapular and glenoid cavity indexes were calculated for every bone. In addition to standard anthropometric measurements t

[Stability of dental implants in microvascular scapula and iliac crest transplants].

STUDY: In this study 24 patients with tumours of the mandible, mandibular resection, neck dissection and reconstruction by microvascular iliac crest (13) or scapula transplants (11) were examined following implantological treatment. RESULTS: In all patients the implantological examination was performed on average two years and five months after implant insertion. This allowed for observation of periotest values, periimplant probing depth and sulcus bleeding (SBI). Furthermore, the loss of periimplant bone was registered radiologically. In both groups periotest values were normal. In the group
